Thanks Ming, my son has speech delay and I agree with you the structured tasks work much better than the naturalistic approach. Especially in the early stage of intervention, when the child has limited words and interests. I would say it works much better if the speech therapist can teach parents 10-20 structured tasks / games that the child might interested. It’s important that speech delayed child can quickly have some progress, so the parent can have some relief and gain confidence and experience on how to teach in an efficient way. My experience is when my son has more words and interests, our conversations just naturally get naturalistic. Most childcare these days have some degree of Montessori approach to teach child. I just don’t understand, if the clear structured / programmed tasks are Widely accepted for teach non-delayed child, why it is not accepted for the speech delayed child ?

I love your explanations, Ming. We are in America and there is a severe breakdown between therapists and parents. In 7 years of therapy with both of our sons, we have only had one therapist who sat down and did intense and intentional parent training with us. I love the community you are building and I appreciate the time you take to do this. Thank you for being detailed and not vague.

I couldn’t agree with you more about parents needing structure, particularly at the beginning of their journey. It’s for this reason that I loved PECS. It gave me a structure to help my son and was a game changer! My son is now 12 and thriving. I’ve been told that he is a GLP and I attended the course and wasn’t convinced by some of the wild claims made. I felt it lacked structure. I also have this book that you are referring to and found it hard to use in the early days.

I agree to some extent, however, I do think the structured tasks need to be fun, engaging & of interest to the child, if not learning will be limited . I bring my own structured tasks but I follow the child’s lead & I work from there. I’ve had great results but I agree, if you lack structure then the kid is wild & has no clear boundaries.

I feel so drained my 2years old son has brain damage he can't sit, talk, walk or do anything on his own. Being a first time Mom, not having any resource of income and his father walking away it's really something else currently am unable to take him for physiotherapy due to lack transport and he isn't eating good food only Nshima Feel like i have failed my child😢 Please Pray for me 🙏
