the purpose of the propellers is to travel "diagonally" through the air. in the car set-up, each propeller operates equivalently to the sail in a boat. that's what makes this system work. what's described in the video is an insufficient description of what's going on and doesn't properly justify how it can travel faster than the wind.

Sailing ships can also outrun the wind, particularly in directions the wind is not blowing. This doesn’t break the laws of physics, it just takes more energy out of the wind that a naive solution.

if you still don't understand it, this is how it works basically: 1) wind pushes vehicle kinda like a fan-shaped sailboat, making wheels move. The fan does NOT help at all. 2) wheels turn propeller backwards(!). Not in the direction you'd expect! 3) vehicle gets to same speed as wind, but wheels keep on pushing wind backwards 4) wind being pushed backwards makes vehicle speed up a little 5) Where does the energy go? Why isn't this perpetual motion? Because it's converting the momentum (from being pushed by the wind) into a fan pushing a small part of the air backwards. It can't go infinitely fast this way: all it can do is speed up until it gets balanced out by wind strength, friction, and gear efficiency like... if you want a simile imagine someone who's ice skating who gets shoved forward. And at the same time, they're also pushing back on the people shoving them. The person shoving them moves them forward, and shoving back on people gives them just a little more speed

For people who think this violates thermodynamics: impulse and kinetic energy are different one is proportional to m*v=F*t (t being time) the other to (mv^2)/2 meaning that if push backward the twice the mass of something it will take exert the same force on you but take you HALF the energy ((2*mv^2)/2 < (m*(2v)^2/2 = 4*(mv^2)/2). So you can take kinetic energy from the wind and push off of the ground and because the ground has much more mass you'll gain kinetic energy even when you outpace the wind.

1:35 It's important to point out that it's almost always the "wind driving the propeller" it's just that because the wind CAN'T push the thing backwards (because it's attached to the wheels) the wind pushes the propeller SIDEWAYS - but that means making the propeller continue to spin, basically because the propeller has an angle, the actual SURFACE of the propeller blades is never moving faster then the wind at a given point. (The only difference is when the thing is moving exactly at the speed of wind, in which case there's no force acting on the propeller really and it can 'start' like if you start one of these vehicles on a treadmill with no moving air it will start to go)
@Enderblade18

@TheTSense

The real problem here is people think of two objects, the car and the wind, and both are moving at some speed. When in reality the wind is everywhere. If you move at 25 mph and the wind moves at 20 mph, you are not going to "outrun" the wind. After one hour, the wind will not be exactly 5 miles behind you and as such, can't push you. Even if you outrun the wind behind you, in front of you is more wind to work with.
@noiseisgold3n42
@noiseisgold3n42 5 күн бұрын
lol. that's not the problem. The problem is that wind can only provide energy at a relative velocity. Once you and the wind are moving at the same speed, you cease to have a relative velocity.
@long-limbs-alias-sisifr
@long-limbs-alias-sisifr 6 күн бұрын
in short, from what I understood this creates a virtuous circle when the wheels make a sort of call for energy which accelerates the fan which at one point accelerates enough to push back part of the air and accelerate at the same time, which the latter by returning increases the speed of the fan. Furthermore I imagine that this must create a pressure difference which must play a role in the acceleration. Is this it. My English is not perfect and sometimes I struggle to understand everything well
@long-limbs-alias-sisifr
@long-limbs-alias-sisifr 5 күн бұрын
correction: in fact what happens at the beginning is that as the ground is denser than the air pushed by the ground, and due to the mechanism of the vehicle, we will have the same effect as a leg pushing on the ground to move forward.

Here's an interesting question, if you design the propeller to have active wing angles, could you make a vehicle with negative coefficient of drag?
@Leon-eq6ei
@Leon-eq6ei 7 күн бұрын
I think this is possible because of you have a plane that is wind powered you can switch your pov to inside of the plane. There the wind is still. But a turbine on the plane would still spin. And the wind would keep it on a constant rotation speed. This can be used to then power a propulsion mechanism. You would propably not call it a negative cw value because of its definition though.
