Early 2000s Jpop was booming, then they restricted all online media due to piracy... sure it's understandable BUT they did not provide options for foreign fans~ I remember someone posting how to buy an album from the company's Japanese website... no access to variety shows either that the idols go on to.... even the PVs are only accessible by buying DVD or 1 min versions posted on YT (if they post at all)~ If Jpop did not cocoon themsleves they would've had the same global chance as Kpop~

Exactly! There was so much potential in the Middle 2000s for Japanese Bands to sell their albums in the Western Market. Dir en grey, Gackt, The Gazette, Mucc and many others tried to sell their albums and concert DVDs in Western Shops. Hot Topic tried to get on board with the Japanese Rock / Visual Kei explosion happening in the USA. It was so much easier and cheaper to buy a Dir en grey CD in Hot Topic for $14, rather than to buy an import directly from Japan for $40. I also remember Hot Topic sold the "Shoxx" and "Cure" VK fasion magazines, as well as an English Printed magazine for VK & J-Rock fans, called "Purple Sky" -- this magazine was started by Brian "Boo" Stewart, someone who was well known for starting the website called "Centigrade-J" where they shared their English translations of Dir en grey's songs. 2006 to 2011 was the peak / apex of the Japanese Rock fandom in the USA. But because of not enough promotion, the boom died down... K-Pop moved in to fill the void, but for me, it is not the same! Metal & Rock is better than Pop! Where are the Korean Metal Bands? Does Korea have anything similar to Visual Kei? Where is the theatrics? Where is the edginess? There is nothing edgy or fun about a bunch of cute looking wanna-be Nsync type of bands.... that is what K-Pop sounds like to me. Boring "Backstreet Boy" type of music. I want the loud and angry music like Dir en grey and The Gazette! I want the pretty "Classical Inspired" music like Gackt and Malice Mizer! Not boring "Pop Music!" If I want "Pop" I will just listen to Utada Hikaru or Ayumi Hamasaki.... but I would prefer something more similar to a Japanese Nine Inch Nails or a Japanese Marilyn Manson. Pop Music just isn't edgy and angry enough! Boring! Like "Country Music" or "Christian Rock" lol.... Boring, boring, boring!
@ashburnian2 жыл бұрын
Defeat? That's not a word I'd use for music or entertainment. Nobody in Korea would think Kpop has defeated Jpop. We Koreans are surprised and thankful that Kpop became so popular globally. Defeating Jpop or other countries music was never been an agenda for the Kpop industry. Kpop exists to entertain people and make money from it. So I beg you to stop seeing things from a war/competition/conquering perspective.
@user-qm7jw2 жыл бұрын
Because Japanese music industry doesn't give a shit about overseas. Koreans aim to sell overseas, while Japanese aim to sell domestically. Japan's music market is the second largest in the world after the U.S., so Japanese artists do not need to go out of their way to market their products overseas.

It wouldn't have mattered since Japan only focused on their domestic market it never got to evolve and stayed stagnant just like Japan's economy. The quality of music, singing, performance etc is just lacking and still stuck in the 90's and early 2000's. If you don't change and evolve you will be left behind and die, that is what happened to JPOP. So it was basically inevitable no matter what they did.
@MaxBraver555 Жыл бұрын
I think it's because of 1 important thing, is marketing target demographics, and that is international, even though they can't be understood, there's subtitles in their music videos, J-Pop on the other hand, while their songs being used in anime (especially in the 90's) helps promoting their songs, when you look or search for their songs/music video, there's no subtitles like it was only targetted for Japanese audience only, which I have nothing against, if that's their way, BUT there are few that does it. even with that set, I'm more into Japanese Pop culture
@shanicestella22262 жыл бұрын
Its Marketing Tactic Issue , Kpop Agency are Very Agrressive to Promoting their Artist with Aggresive Marketing Tactics , so the accessability of Kpop in every platform (( from video streaming platform until various music streaming platform )) having easier accesability compared to Jpop
@chasse-nigb3r2 жыл бұрын
K pop might be more popular but in terms of actual music even japanese pop songs/anime song writers know what music theory is and can play instruments, while the most popular artist in the world the "western and kpop" literally take the musical talent part out and throw it in the trash then proceeds to replace it with a lot of autotune and pre recorded loops of drums etc., japanese singers do use autotune like myth and roid and fear n loathing but they can still sing live, while the us and kpop either go full autotune or just lipsynching cause they are on stage for the eye candy anyways not their talent.

when it comes music I personally like Japanese rock and metal been listening to bands like Crossfaith (Japanese Metalcore band) and maximum the hormone and as for Korean music I've basically been listening to the guy who pioneered it all... Seotaiji for a bit of context Jeong Hyeon-cheol, better known as Seo Taiji or Seo Tae-ji (서태지), is a South Korean singer, musician, songwriter and record producer. After dropping out of high school to pursue a music career, he rose to become one of the most prominent and influential cultural icons in South Korea, with many referring to him as "the President of Culture". Following a brief stint in the heavy metal band Sinawe, Taiji formed Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992 with whom he found immediate success. Their style of music, dance, fashion, and self-presentation resonated with the young generation-termed the sinsedae, "new generation." They incorporated elements of popular musical genres from the West and contributed considerably larger to Korean pop culture and Korean pop's development in the 1990s. His songs addressed social and political concerns of the youth including the stressful and stifling system of education in Korea, and the rage of youth in the face of poor social and economic outlook. Widespread youth backlash to government suppression of the social commentary in his music became a catalyst for the abolishment of censorship of Korean popular music lyrics. His career paved the way for free expression in Korean pop music. Although he initially announced retirement upon disbanding the group in 1996, Taiji released his first solo album two years later and continued his successful career.

It's really a matter of marketing and such. Korean music industry wants to get global, so they simplify their sound (mostly the K-pop group industry; Korean music also includes some indie scenes that are still Korean-based). In contrast, Japanese music is more unique and mostly for Japanese market; you gotta acquire that taste if you're not that much into Japanese pop culture. I like both music btw. Sure, the general public will occasionally listen to a song by a K-pop but most of the general public doesn't go in for "idol culture" Among the general public, they prefer Hip-hop, R&B, Ballads, EDM, Trot, Western music, and domestic artists/soloists. So why are there so many idols on the Korean music charts? Because it's a chart mainly for idol manias. There are many music charts in Korea.

I think if the Japanese artists are happy with their unique domestic market, then more power to them. It is true that K-pop has successfully captured the global market, especially on KZbin, as I am listening more to K-pop than even Western artists.

I’m not into pops. I’m a metal head so Japan is better for me. Maximum the Hormone, Crossfaith, Babymetal and others. I miss going to some live houses to listen amateur metal bands. Idk the metal scene in Korea but the metal community in Japan supports each other, I like that. I like Ichika Nito as well, imo, one of the best guitar players in the world.

Pop industries have always been the strategic assets of soft power projections. Japan did promote their idols like Kyon Kyon, Akina, Checkers and Anzenchitai in foreign markets in the 80's. The idea was to inculcate and associate the feel good factors of Pop to Japanese brands among the teenagers. That way, the kids tended to think favourably of the Japanese brands when they grew up and were making the purchasing decisions. By the end of the 90's, most Japanese brands were already well established and maybe that's why the large corporations no longer see the need to promote their pop industry. After that, Korean came to fill up the void left by Jpop and repeated the game.

First Take is a result of what Meshida-Ken san said. The Japan music industry is still very reliant on physical CD sales in Japan (local market). The record companies are not interested in promoting their music to the global market. Hence thats why you wont see popular Jpop groups releasing their songs on their own KZbin channels. Sure some big names will have their music videos on the channel but everyone below AAA level only posts PV (promotional videos) at most because they need to sell the Blurays and DVDs. First Take is the only place where most overseas fans can have listen to the songs officially.

Growing up in taiwan, japanese entertainment was everywhere, whether that was in terms of films/tv shows, game shows, music (anything u can think of). So i grew up with a ton of it as a kid. Then moved to europe for a couple years before moving to china. Thats when groups like super junior, big bang, girls generation, kara, wonder girls etc. were starting out/starting to make a name for themselves. Having korean friends in school, they listened to their music and watched their shows in the dorms so i started to gravitate towards it. Been a fan of their stuff ever since. Used to consume so much japanese entertainment, but now its almost completely switched to korean stuff. I still read mangas/watch animes but thats mostly it. Not saying which is better, but guess im a good example of the diminished power/influence of japanese entertainment vs the rising power/influence of korean entertainment.

I love both J-pop and K-pop. I think Japan is the world's 2nd largest music industry after US, so local artists don't have much need to go global as you noted. J-pop is creative and has unique sound though - from city pop to casiopea and t-square to l'arc en ciel, they all have high creativity and excellent musical skills. You are also right that k-pop is more geared toward western / international audience, and their song styles reflect that. Their idols are top notch and well-trained in dancing, singing, and aegyo-ing :), but their songs are rich musically and also refreshing- you can find that in their indie music scene, from ballad to rap. Anyway, thanks for the great job covering a fun topic in a funny way! You and Ken san should be in a movie somewhere.

I feel Jpop and Japanese pop culture have been very reserved and more nostalgic towards the world. They won't be once go full throttle on promoting it on epic global events. Korean pop culture have been on Olympic games, fifa world cup and Netflix etc. But Japanese pop keeps it a bit calm on world promoting each eras artist, keeping every artist alive on the long run and is for own nation . I dunno if this is in order to have the longest breath on the long term. Japanese pop culture is more egalitarian modest and diverse. Also jpop never got full attention to the world in history because of japanese Anime and video games being way more popular. Jpop was immediately restricted in its 2000s probably by directors to not go to wild.

Some of the most creative, high-quality music ever created was by Japanese artists in the 1980s. Sadly, contemporary Japanese popular music is over-simplified, low-IQ garbage; but so is K-pop. Both J-pop and K-pop are Asian interpretations of African-American popular music, which they mimic because it's currently profitable.

Honestly, I never like K-pop but for some reason I am entirely hooked with Jpop. Not just anime song, 雪の花, 月光 and a lot of others are all very nice songs… Jpop at least to me doesn’t rely on appearance of singers but their ability to sing, which is more important.
@jeans44842 жыл бұрын
Jpop not rely on appearance? What is this alternate universe Japan you're talking about? Jpop, especially idol rely heavily on look, hell, most of idol groups can't sing and dance whatsoever, they just rely on being cute.

@@jeans4484 first of all, that's only my opinion. and back in late 80s and early 90s, or even early 2000s, I honestly don't think appearance was super big deal. Singers like Mika Nakashima, Hikaru Utada they werent as beautiful as what the standard beauty is in Japan at the time. Yet they stood out because of their voice and the performance. And even now, the girl who sings the OP for Full Metal Alchemist, is she beautiful like the ones you see on the screen? I dont think so right? But YUI is actually pretty good and popular. But in Kpop, can you say the same? If the singer is only good at singing and doesnt meet the beauty standard, will he or she be able to debut in Kpop world?

Marketing probably is one of the reasons. It is hard to find even osts of anime posted here in youtube. They are being taken down by the music company. Unlike western and korean counterparts that you can easily find here in youtube and other platforms. But I really do think Jpop has the same potential as Korean and Western music. I remember back then how Utada Hikaru's 'First Love' became so popular here in the Philippines. Even non-anime fans was singing to that song.
@glentot92432 жыл бұрын
I think the main problem is with inaccessiblity. although there is high demand for a lot of japanese culture, not only JPOP, japanese media has been actively limiting accessibility from outside japan. Either outside market is completely blocked off or only small/cut off contents are getting out. most of the time, people outside of japan resort to non legal means just to be able to consume japanese domestic. things are getting better though, and a lot of content are getting out now. Korea should be credited for that. Korea did manage to master pop culture globalization
