Jailer is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language black comedy-action film starring Rajinikanth in the title role written and directed by Nelson and produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures. Along with an ensemble cast Ramya Krishnan, Vinayakan, Vasanth Ravi, Sunil, Mirnaa Menon and Tamannaah Bhatia. While Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff and Shiva Rajkumar makes cameo appearance. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while the cinematography and editing were handled by Vijay Kartik Kannan and R. Nirmal. The plot revolves around a retired cop, who avenges his son's death.
The film was officially announced in February 2022 with the working title Thalaivar 169, being the 169th film of Rajinikanth, while the official title Jailer was announced in June. Principal photography began in August 2022 in Chennai and wrapped in June 2023.
Jailer released theatrically on 10 August 2023 to mostly positive reviews from the critics.
Premise
Muthuvel Pandian is a retired police officer who leads a normal domestic life with his beautiful family. Muthuvel's son, ACP Arjun Pandian IPS, is dealing with an investigation of a dreaded Malayali gangster named Varman, who smuggles idols of gods and sells them to buyers overseas. As Arjun gets closer to nabbing Varman, he suddenly goes missing and the police department declares him to be dead. Muthuvel learns about Arjun’s death and sets out to exact revenge against Varman, whilst protecting his family at the same time.
