Important to note that Mr. Blobby was designed to be a parody of a traditional children's show costumed character, hence his rather grotesque appearance. Kids still seemed to love him anyway (or they were terrified). He was really supposed to be a big joke, but he sort of ended up becoming what he was parodying.

Great video, Ive never heard anyone make the connection to Shinto or talk about the lack of high/low art distinction before. One thing that I still wonder about though is the role mascots play for certain institutions. Mascots for locations, public services, and media companies make sense to me, like Western mascots (which are mainly for sports and foods) it makes sense for them to have a fun, friendly, celebratory tone to them. These are things that, in one way or another, are supposed to make you feel happy. When the same sort of mascot is applied to things like prisons and military though, I can't quite shake the tonal dissonance. Are the mascots meant to make a statement about how the prison or military is going to change in some way to match the happy nature of the mascot, or is it meant purely to sway public opinion and distract from the darker natures of these things? Or am I just thinking entirely too much about these things? Largely I kind of love Japanese mascots but in some instances I can't help but get the same feeling about them as I do with corporate Twitter.
