What's working for me right now is mining words I saw in stuff I like (starting with simple words first ofc) and taking it a bit slow to recognize the kanji. I'm using Yomitan and Migaku and both give hints about the frequency of the words, which is extra handy to learn actually useful word. They also add *sound* to Anki cards, and *screenshots*. All those elements really helped me to remember words, because I can recall the context which seem so important in Japanese. For AI, I used ChatGPT to explain the grammar structure of a sentence and it has been very helpful so far. I use a prompt like this "Can you break down the following Japanese sentence without romaji, only kana?". Note: For Yomitan, to have picture directly into the anki cards, you have to map "{clipboard-image}" and "{screenshot}" to 2 new fields of your cards. For {screenshot}, Yomitan takes a screenshot itself. For {clipboard-image}, it's what you have in your clipboard (so when you do "PRINT SCREEN" or CTRL+C in Paint).

im only half way through the video, but it definitely gets easier over time as you said. i do think some words stick right away, while others literally just wont for whatever reason. Just need patience, thousands of words to learn you know? No biggie im also going to try your idea of pasting the kanji into google for a picture example, sounds interesting actually. Thanks for that

Different for everyone, majority of people don’t get that

Hey, at what point do you think would be good time to start watching anime/jdramas with japanese subtitles? Early on or should I get my vocabulary to a certain level first? I just finished genki 1. Thanks.

As soon as possible to lock in the habit - you don’t have to understand everything at the start

i've been studying japanese for 3.5 years now(3 hours p day).i know around 15000 words, and i understand almost everything i watch or read now, and my best advice for content to watch in the beginning is rewatching anime/dramas that you've already seen with english subtitles(but now with jap subs). also choose content that is aimed at teens or children in the beginning, otherwise you will understand nothing and it won't be that helpful. it won't be that fun in the beginning, but you will make progress. just stick with it and you will unlock more and more interesting content, it's very slow but also very rewarding.
