I think it comes down to focus versus unfocused. When one is in pain they cannot focus well but if you have keenly learned to focus your mind you can push through the pain. I think this is true for Jedi, they first learned to focus their minds and remain focused which allows them to use the same amount of force that a Sith might be using but more efficiently because of their focus allowing more of the force to be used in their end goal.

Makes sense. Easily why ventrus peaked fast vs asoka during the clone wars (I think she was close in saber fighting) who during the mandalorian, would absolutely dump on ventrus.

Those who think and ponder too much, will fail to act or will act too late; those who only act, will fail to think and ponder or will not learn what they should; those who learn to think after they have learned to act, will forever fight to restrain and control themselves; those who learn how to act after they have learned restraint and control, will understand when and how to act. The Jedi do not understand when action is critical, as in the mandalorian war, but the sith don't learn until it is too late as in Darth Banes time. Needing to be a part of the republics dealings, and shouldn't allow absurd amounts of unrestrained power hungry maniacs. In both cases, both orders almost went extinct.

Except that for the SIth, pain is an emotion and thus pain only makes them more powerful, more aggressive, ya one could say that Jedi sometimes would be more focused, but if enough pressure is put on them, that focus breaks and they become weaker, which is why in the old republic days and even in the ancient era Sith apprentices often could beat a fully educated Jedi Knight, because despite their attempt to become without emotion, they are living beings and having emotions is both normal instinct and normal nature to them, so the ''bubble'' they use to push all those emotions aside is often relatively easy to break.

Control and restraint. Sith fight with incredible power in the beginning, if you can endure the first attacks they will become weaker. With Jedi they hold back and use their power when needed. This is not the case for all but you see it in the most veteran of Jedi.

That is true. when a Jedi is trained. they're trained to hold back and like you said, the force is like a river and when you're trained as a Jedi, a damn is put in front of your power in your only allowed to use certain amount of knowledge of that energy. but when you become a sith and turn to the dark side, that damn is removed and your full power is unleashed and flowing through you. I believe that's what happened with Anakin when he turned to the dark side in the revenge of the sith novel cuz his heart was like a furnace And when he gave into the dark side and looked inward on himself, that's when the gates to his heart unleash the full power of the furnace and his power in the force and that's what made him so powerful when he took out the Jedi in the temple

There is that, but its also the same principal that governs everything. Power expressed along a polarity grows from incorporating both. The concept of the yin/ yang- light and dark do not oppose each other, but rather compliment and clarify one another. The root issue here is that the Jedi abs the sith are equally in error, because both of them try to cut off half of themselves, half of the force. But when one changes sides, they again great power. The yin and yang have a circle of the opposite inside the point of each element at its greatest- the point of maximum yin has a dot of yang, and vice versa. So the one who changes sides has that greater capacity because they have a core of the opposite. The ideal, however, is to stay in the center...

Wasn't Sidious also familiar with the light side of the force? When he said to Anakin, "My mentor taught me everything about the force, even the nature of the dark side." and "If one is to understand the great mystery, one must study all its aspects..." that seemed to imply that he at least studied the light side, too. Of course, he wasn't trained as a Jedi, but knowing the light side would certainly make him more powerful than a pure dark side Sith.

There is a theory alongside but apart from the one about him supposedly draining Padme's life from a distance to keep Vader alive. Instead this theory suggests that Sidious holding his palm over Vader on Mustafar was a Light Side technique that kept Vader stable until he could be tended to by the medical droids. Nothing concrete on screen or otherwise, though. But he did always come off as someone who understood that the darkest shadows could only be thrown by the light.

Coming from someone who has a livespan of a thousand years, you have to respect his perspective. This is why he told Luke the dark side isn't actually stronger, it's just more tempting. The River and Dam analogy is my take on this too; with augmented feelings they get to know the Dark Force and probably more, also how to combine it with the Light Force and maybe a third Force, not seen when you're 1-sided; like the Dark Jedi and Je'di before them; so I think it gets really complex and powerful, proving once more that the right way of the Force, is to know both sides, the good balance between them and be virtuous about it, like the Je'di were

I dont think a dark obi would be very powerful, if I remember correctly from a previous vid it was mentioned that Obi-Wan's mediclorian count (don't remember if it's the right spelling) is quite low, so his force potential is actually fairly low. That is why he focused and mastered a defensive saber form to the point where he can rival even yoda and mace in saber combat. Without the impenetrable defensive form and focus of a jedi, I don't imagine he would do well as a sith or dark side user.

There are many points to be made to discuss the accuracies and inaccuracies about former Jedi-Sith Lords tending to be more powerful than other Sith. You discussed obvious exceptions like Sidious, Vitiate, and Malgus. When talking about the river as an analogy, I think that is just a scratch of the barrier. Most former Jedi-Sith understand personally the ideology the Order puts on itself. They understand the intuition from the Light Side, the process of coping with emotion to the point of bottling it, and using it to access their focus in combat. This is probably the greatest reason why these Sith are more successful Jedi killers than others in the Sith Order. They KNOW how Jedi fight. They KNOW how they are trained. They KNOW the conflict of holding back their dark emotions and how it will weigh on them. This is also a possible asset of intuition of how Palpatine became as powerful in killing Jedi as he was. Most likely after Dooku's stalemate with Yoda, he understood this concept of former jedi falling to the Dark Side, and used his time around the Jedi to study and observe the way they think and manipulate the Force: far more than what he was "told" by the millennia passed down knowledge from the Rule of Two. These Sith know the intuition of the Light Side, therefore they know what to expect when facing a Jedi.

I agree with a lot of this video! Touching on the saber technique portion… I believe that a Jedi can maintain composure and thus stay true or to their technique versus the Sith that eventually for gold technique with anger I believe this is a case by case basis. Count Dooku clearly maintained technique over anger. I feel the biggest piece of the puzzle is patience. Seth will eventually just get angry and lose control Jedi turn Seth would likely have more patience and be more calculating. Plus to be fair we have no idea how many Jedi and fall into the Darkside and left the order Outside of a select small few.

I've always believed that former Jedi turned Sith were always more powerful than straight Sith. I think of it like this, a straight Sith is like a faucet that is turned on full blast from the start, while a Jedi is a faucet that is turned on at a certain level of water pressure. Depending on the situation the faucet is sometimes on full blast and sometimes medium or low. Of course, if you want a simpler explanation a Jedi has far better control while a straight Sith has no control except for aiming their power and aggression at.

I feel like Jedi training not only gives a solid foundation but it instills a sense of control that even for a Sith that falls will pass over into their new abilities. Dooku is the extreme example of this. He uses the dark side with lethal precision and control while still being very powerful. This isn’t the case 100% since someone like Anakin he NEVER conquered his inner demons or learned proper control only became more chaotic once he fell to the dark side. Only taking his time to learn control when he was force to build his fighting skills from the ground up since he had to adapt to his cybernetics

I think it depends on the Force User as well as how much they study the Force as a whole. Going back to Revan he was the most powerful Sith to have ever lived, nearly bringing both the Republic and the Sith Empire to their knees on multiple occasions, only for fate to ultimately stop him. It took strike teams of Jedi and Sith, both individually as well as together to stop him. His power rivaling that of Sidious and only surpassed by Viviate, who's power grew even further after using Revan as a connection to the Light Side. This also brings up the question of how powerful Anakin could have been if he wasn't so badly injured on Mustafar, or if we want to go full fan fiction if somehow, someway, Anakin had been trained by Revan in both the light and the dark. I think that not only could he have exceeded Revan, Palpatine and Yoda but even Valkorion. Destroying the Sith entirely and reshaping the Jedi Order to the point where it would be unrecognizable to how it was before order 66.

Psychopaths can know those feelings, but they simply lack empathy. They can't put themselves in another's shoes, and have a serious narcissistic slant. Palpatine in both Legends and Canon, is the most powerful Sith of all time, with only two in Legends that can potentially beat him (Krayt has at least a 50/50 chance, and Vitiate/Valkorion is simply a weak combatant with minimal experience). Sidious' power comes from his overflowing wells of hatred and his extreme levels of self-confidence and long years of bending the Dark Side to his will. Yoda described him as being "a black hole in the Force". An infinite black void filled with unspeakable power, but also horror. Sidious is not invicible, but he is the purest avatar the Dark Side ever had.

I do believe it comes to having balance. Tho they have a bigger tendency to adhere to the dark side, both the dark and light side have the same source.. the force. Having a broader understanding of the aspect that incorporate the Force, will always yield better results when it comes to understand either side and how they function as a sole piece. It's like a piece in a machine. You will have a better understanding of its importance and how to better utilize it or manipulate it, only when you understand the whole machine.

Jedi who walk the tightrope between both sides may be exceptional versus Sith or other Jedi for a similar reason. Namely that they focus and use the darker powers to a righteous end rather than becoming a conduit of their corruptive influence in exchange for personal ambition. Using the Dark Side selflessly, conducting its destructive power against those who upset the balance of Force rather than twisting it, is not something explored in Disney's material so far but figures like Katarn seemed to grasp this concept. It seems like anathema to the House of Mouse to acknowledge that things like righteous anger do actually exist as does an ambition to serve others and the concept of justice. Dichotomous concepts like that upset the apple cart of people like Hidalgo who narrow-mindedly consider the Force a pure binary despite evidence to the contrary. While its lore is distinct and very different from Star Wars, Destiny has touched on this. There the Light flows from without and acts through those it has chosen to serve it. The Dark, by contrast, flows from within. Guardians are able to channel both and their Dark powers are arguably more powerful than foes they have faced who have called on the Darkness from outside of themselves. Drawing from within and using ambient power to their advantage, not relying on some ritual or external influence is a good bet why this is the case. They are not incurring a cost upon themselves from other entities and their willpower which has often been restrained by untold years of letting the Traveler act through them finally being freed draws an interesting parallel to the analogy about a dammed or undammed river. There are also examples of Guardians who drew on the Darkness as their enemies had, and became terrifying specters of their former selves - presumably there's even an entire alternate timeline's worth of them who went over entirely to the Dark. But at the end of the day, it's always been my thinking that a good and righteous person who falls to ambition and selfishness will always make for a more ruthless, powerful, and savage villain than someone who has known no other way of living. They had to overcome their own handicaps as well as the ones they were taught, they must deny their conscience, and it's not just a one-time act. It's something they must do constantly. In the context of Star Wars again this likely further fuels a Jedi-to-Sith's anger and pain rather consistently. Unless a "pure" Sith can match this, it's unlikely they could overcome such a figure.

Jedi are trained to be mindful of there surroundings. Where the sith like sidious and maul have delved so deep that the darkness blinds them and that can be a suver weakness for a sith. That is why sith like Reven and Exar Kun even the lady of betrayal kraya and freeda Nad had such success as lords of the sith.

i think the reason that a jedi-sith is more powerful than a full sith not only because jedi are about knowing how the force itself works, but also because i think "falling" to the dark side is a bigger deal, and echo in the force, compared to being bathed in dark and never knowing the light

Actually, a Jedi master won’t tell someone to “mind their feelings;” they will tell them to “be MINDFUL OF their feelings.” This is critical to understanding the Jedi because mindfulness is a real concept-you can look it up. The short version is that it means being fully aware of one’s feelings, and how they shift from moment to moment, accepting them without being overwhelmed by them. It’s actually something used as a real world therapy technique. As such, a traumatized Jedi SHOULD be mindful, since therapy is obviously a good way to help with trauma, and as previously stated mindfulness is therapeutic.

Darth Plagueis once said that no Jedi could ever become a "true" Sith. However, many of the early Sith legends were former Jedi. Exar Kun, Darth Revan, Darth Ruin, even Darth Vader were all former Jedi. An old Wookieepedia page from years ago (Wookieepedia is always changing) has the legendary Tulak Hord as a former Jedi Master.

I believe that the Jedi Order do not show or give personalized help in dealing with emotions. By looking at the greater picture of what is and can be, they often overlook how much trauma is built up within a Jedi. This is why when a Jedi goes over to the dark side, they tend to act on those feeling intensely. Luke's order helped to develop an open mind to the Force to begin with and he must have assisted in processing emotions with his padawans cuz that's how he brought Anakin back. This is why there are almost no/rare Jedi defecting from his Order.

Likely comes down to toolset. You can be a really good golfer with just 4 clubs in your bag, but you are going to become an even better with 8. Even if you have an equal strength and accurate club either way. There are just some situations where knowledge/use of a particular tool is more accurate for the situation. Not to mention, Jedi often must overcome different barriers through temperance, patience and thought using only the power required to get by, instead of just bashing down different barriers with the same battering ram via overwhelming force without patience. Thus Jedi fallen to the dark side, it's not shocking, the most successful in light saber combat, didn't show their hand and only displayed what they needed to defeat, saving overwhelming power as a shock and awe method of defeating their opponent.

The differences described in the video are more the distinction between pain and anguish. Sith are made to endure pain, Jedi use their own will to endure the forced detachment of a Jedi, to witness restrictions on acting on their compassion and a degree of helplessness for things they were not allowed to prevent. This makes the pain their own and when mixed with regret and resentment produces a truly anguished soul which will have more of the dark side to draw upon than a mere sith born of sadism.

I think the fact that even certain light saber styles give Jedi a taste of the dark side, and every grand master has studied the legends of the dark side to understand their opponent better… this tells us that the dark and light is ever present in both Jedi and Sith. The true difference is only one thing, Jedi detach from emotions Sith intrinsically embrace them.

Maybe it's because that the Jedi who fall to the dark side, thus embracing the philosophy of the Sith subsequent to their fall, are trained and spend the majority of the early and mid years of their lives as jedi, so that when/if they fall, it's not like their power and all they've learned prior just disappear. Maybe, due to an absolute shift in their stance in the force, causes a total shift instead of a partial shift, and the existing power they have already just becomes absorbed by their new stance in the force and becomes unified with whichever alignment so much that it comes into contact with the new power acquired, essentially doubling the intensity of what was before if we're talking about power for powers' sake of course

I think its like what Palpatine said. To become truely powerful, one must study all aspects of the force not just a small part of it. Jedi and Sith both know their own aspects of the force to what their order will allow them to learn but a Jedi who becomes a Sith has knowledge of the Light side AND the Dark side making them more powerful.

Palpatine took down 3 Jedi in quick succession with the lightsaber before Windu overcame him and Yoda one on one, he is not calm in these duels and expertly uses his emotions in battle, that would imply the mastery of an high emotional style is technically better at peak than the emotionally checked Jedi styles (except Vaapad)

We should also consider the notion that the Dark Side is a corruption of the Force, not innate to the Force itself. Though lore seems to go back and forth on this concept, the idea that the Dark Side is, at least in part, a twisted divergence from the true nature of the Force (or at least that many think of it that way, an idea that would echo through the Force itself and potentially alter its expression) could be a factor. Instead of comparing rivers and dams, lets compare the Force to living tissue. If a Jedi is a healthy cell (constrained, functional, full of life but essentially limited, acting in concert with the body) then a Sith would be a virus (unrestrained, self-concerned, a life made through parasitic violence). What is a Dark Jedi, then? Cancer. They combine the traits of the healthy tissue and the traits of the virus to become something unbound. If we accept the idea that the Dark Side is an influence of corruption within the Force, then it would care little for those already under it's sway. The Sith are a prize it has already "won", and the main thing it gains from them is the ability to spread. If the Force has a will, and the Jedi can enact that will, then it stands to reason that the Dark Side has a will of its own -- one reflected in the desires of its adherents, a will to possess, to conquer, and control. Simply put, the Dark Side would want to claim the Force entire, and so providing a boon of power to those who help it fulfill that goal -- those who turn from the Light to the Dark -- serves its interests nicely. It's the baited hook to catch the fish, essentially.

One aspect of it could be, that Sith training is extremely abusive, and that this abuse, while good at getting short bursts of power, ultimately harms and limits and stunts their growth. People talk about the Jedi teaching their students to suppress their emotions, but really Jedi teaching tells them to feel their emotions, but not let their feelings control them. Sith on the other hand are in fact emotionally stunted because the only feelings they are told to indulge in are rage, fear, and hatred. They don't let themselves feel joy, peace, wonder or compassion. The abuse of the Sith prevents them from becoming a fully realized person, they are slaves to their fear and hate. The Dark Side is good for power, but ultimately degrades the user, while the philosophy of the Jedi is sustaining. The Force is about reaching out with your feelings and extending yourself out into the universe. Jedi become more complete people while the Sith are broken from their abuse, and this extends into their knowledge and power in the Force. Jedi turned Sith have a much more complete knowledge of the Force.

picture it like this the light side is camp fire. powerful yet in full control of its actions. it can be used to cook and keep warm. the darkside is like a forest fire. wild and untamed. it moves as it sees fit. a Jedi's job is to maintain the campfire while the sith's job is to spread the forest fire. But when a jedi becomes a sith something changes. before a jedi had to use focus to make up for a lack of raw power available to the dark side. meanwhile the sith use emotions tk amplify that power. but the reason they lose is a lack of focus. they grow so wild like animals that they can't even direct their attacks. but a jedi who has become a sith carries with them the lessons of focus and obtains the raw power of the dark side. in essence the most technically characteristic parts of each side and combines them. that is why a jedi who becomes a sith usually can use force lightning after only minimal instruction while A sith who becomes a jedi struggles to give up power for focus and control

You also can't look past the whole midichlorian thing. If Obi-Wan, for example, were to have turned, he would undoubtedly would have been powerful, but he would not have been as powerful as Anakin because he just didn't have the raw resource of the midichlorians. Its a bit like saying that a soldier is a great shot with a rifle while another has a machine gun. Just because you can suddenly shoot better doesnt mean your rifle is suddenly more effective than the guy with the machine gun. What I think the Jedi turning provides is a much stronge sense of coordination and use of the Force, dark or light. Obi would have been a very cunning Sith and much more able to control his emotions. It would have made him more dangerous than Anakin not by strength, but my mental acuity and style. One bullet to the heart can kill just as well as multiple blasts that are misdirected.

I think it's less about them being Jedi and more WHICH Jedi they are. the ones you mentioned were prodigies, rising stars of the Jedi Order, the most powerful of their generations. The dark side only reached to those who had reached as far as the Jedi could go. When they fell, they were stronger than most in either order, but that was true before they fell as well.

I wonder if the same thing could work in reverse as well. If a jedi turned sith has all their pent up energy and training released as a sith, what about the torrent of rage, pain, and power that a sith has focused finely down to a point like a jedi? One's a burst dam, the other a funnel. Both increase the power of the flow in different ways.

The Sith who weren’t Jedi don’t know the Jedi, or a significant amount of the light side. The Sith who were never Jedi typically have the vanity that causes them to think they are better than any Jedi. The Fallen Jedi turned Sith not only know the Light side and its true power, but they know the Jedi like the back of their hand, and learn to hate and resent them. The former Jedi have an advantage that no one else could have. As a bonus they can open Jedi holocrons ;). But the chance of a former Jedi turned Sith turning back to the Jedi cannot be overstated! Only the wisest of Sith can hope to truly turn a Jedi to the Sith.

If you think about the force powers we see Jedi use regularly, they're about manipulation, of things, of people. The Jedi already don't play fair, they just do it in a very subtle and not-outwardly-aggressive way. They're used to using their powers however they need to 'serve the greater good', the greater good being the Jedi Order and maintaining the status quo. They're used to getting exactly what they want when they need it, and leaving no-one the wiser. Now imagine someone with those powers who's not maintaining the status quo - that's why they're more powerful. If you train as Sith from the get go you miss out on that.

I think this is overly simplistic, especially given that the late Republic Jedi attitude to feelings was neither universal among the order at the time, nor throughout its history - of contemporaries alone, the Altisian Jedi and the Green Jedi, for instance, had some different opinions, and Qui-Gon was a bit more open to emotions, too. Luke's Order in Legends, Luke himself in canon and Legends, likewise, ditto Kanan, Ahsoka, and Ezra. I think it's because, as you touched on, the Jedi are taught a lot more, encouraged to study widely except for the Dark Side, meaning they understand both sides of the Force - they're warned of the Dark Side from the start, how to identify it, avoid it, fight it, what it's weaknesses are, and they have an intimate knowledge of the Light. They also know exactly how to push the buttons of their fellow Jedi, and indeed other living beings - they tend to recognise other motives than greed and hate, even if they disdain them after Falling. Look at Return of the Jedi - Sidious tempts Luke with power and with hate. Vader, on the other hand, gets a far greater reaction by probing his mind, noticing a sister, and immediately stamping on that button. This, from Vader, who in interpersonal reactions is generally about as subtle as a brick to the head, as compared to Sidious, who played the entire galaxy like puppets for decades. And yet, HE'S the one who almost turns Luke, not Sidious. They are also generally trained patiently and with care from childhood. They don't develop as quickly, but they do develop more steadily, meaning that they're less likely to burn out, their strength has been carefully nurtured, and they're more resilient - when they touch the Dark Side, they can handle it. Also, even the more repressed Jedi have the ability to clamp down on their emotions, to focus, in a way that a lot of Sith don't when their blood's up. They tend to burn cold. In general, I think classifying the Dark Side as more powerful is a misnomer. It's a different kind of power: more obvious, more destructive, but fundamentally, more limited. Dark Healing aside (which is just weird and seems to be a peculiarity of the Skywalker bloodline, and isn't exclusively a Dark Side technique), all it can really do is warp and destroy. Light versus Dark is like training versus steroids. When a Jedi turns Dark, they are more uninhibited, they are unrestrained in the use of the Force, but they aren't inherently more powerful. Just more willing to cut loose. However, it also comes with negative side-effects, aside from the mental destabilisation - accounting for unnatural means of life extension and early death by combat, Jedi tend to live longer, healthier lives, because the destructive powers the Sith use take a toll on them. Ex-Jedi manage this better, but it still catches up to them.
