Something I also noticed when I reread the series was that Cassandra Clare wrote in both Will's and Tessa's perspectives a lot, and by a lot I mean constantly throughout the entire series, but she only writes in Jem's perspective a few times. I noticed that and I honestly got really pissed off. And it was, like you said, like she was using Jem as an obstacle to get between Will and Tessa.
@sodapopp43673 жыл бұрын
That's what I'm saying! CC says that she tried to write the love triangle equally, but you can't have Tessa's love for both boys come off as equal when Jem is so clearly written secondary to Will.
@nataliabaszczyk23875 жыл бұрын
I honestly do not think that Tessa didn’t love Jem. I think she did. The love was just different, cause the boys are so different! I think that if Will were the one to propose to Tessa after she already had a kiss with Jem (and almost sex too...) she would feel the same way. She’d be constantly thinking about how much she loves Jem too and she’d be just as torn apart. And also she didn’t have anyone for years after Will’s death and then when Jem became human again she married him almost right away. After 130 years of not being together and of him not really being himself. If she didn’t truly love him she would lose any feelings that she ever had towards him after this much time. And yet she didn’t. To me it proves that she loved Jem just as much as she loved Will. It’s just that with Will it was passionate, cause Will was energetic and all-over-the-place kind of person. And Jem was calm and steady, so their love was calm and steady as well. That’s how I see it.

This is exactly how I feel. I remember reading TID and just continually thinking to myself, "Just pick, Tessa. Don't postpone their heartbreak. Pick so that they can move on and Will and Jem can be best buddies again." I truly love Jem though because through it all, he just stayed so kind and caring. In the end, Will and Jem always put their parabatai's happiness before theirs. And that's what I love most about the series. They stayed parabatai until the end.

The reason Tessa didn’t end her engagement after one day is because Will would not have forgiven her for breaking Jem‘s heart . She even asked Will if she should do it !
Honestly 😂 Even if Tessa did love both boys equally (which it's canon that she did), it still seemed like she would have preferred to have been with Will. She liked Will from the jump, and continued to like him even after he basically called her a whore. Whenever she kisses Jem, she thinks of Will, but when she kisses Will, and sleeps with him the day Jem dies, she doesn't think of Jem. When Jem proposed to her she thinks of Will, but when Will proposes to her she doesn't think of Jem (even though they had been engaged not too long ago). She never seemed to mourn the loss of her romantic relationship with Jem, nor did she ever seem to long to be with him. We never caught her daydreaming about him like she did Will, and when she did it was mostly her saying, "I love him and I don't want to hurt him." It rarely ever seemed like she was with Jem because she wanted to be. I know people love this love triangle and CC swears that she tried to write it equally, but the writing is biased towards Will, and Jem is clearly written as a character secondary to Will, which makes the love seem unequal.
@fireangeldragon45885 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of this. I actually felt like I knew quite a bit about Jem because he was so open and honest, and I also admire how forgiving and selfless and hard to anger he was. It's what I have been striving to be myself, which is part of what really lets me connect with and admire Jem in ways I don't admire many characters, (Captain America/Steve Rogers from Marvel is one of the very few others who comes to mind when I think about these traits that I admire the most because they seem so few and far between. Everyone wants the angsting bad boy, a trope I'm extremely tired of, rather than someone who is sweet and kind), But, God, YES, Jem Carstairs deserved so much better than his treatment in this series, particularly Clockwork Princess! I will say, it's one of the few love triangles that ended in a way where everyone gets to be happy, but sometimes, it does make me angry because of everyone's treatment of Jem. Tessa was pretty much always comparing Jem to Will whenever she was with him, and even if it was just thoughts about Will because of her feelings for him and surprise that she had feelings for Jem, too, it's like, "come on, Tessa, stop playing with Jem's feelings when it's obvious you're much more into Will". It always did seem like Tessa was keeping Jem in her backpocket, and then when Will was available, while she did care about Jem, she wished she could be with Will instead. Here Jem is completely devoted to her and here she is thinking about Will. If you read An Offering of Moonlight, which is their first kiss from Jem's perspective, you see into his head just how much he loves and wants her, but in Tessa's head, she's still thinking about Will. She was constantly two-timing these two boys. Exclusive or not, it upsets me when a woman, (or a man), goes and kisses one person and then kisses another and then goes back to the first and so on and so on. A similar thing happened in the Mortal Instruments, (spoilers if you haven't read all of those), with Simon, Isabelle, and Maia. Simon was dating Isabelle, but knew she was seeing other people at the same time because they weren't exclusive, and then when he was hanging out with Maia, she ended up kissing him and they started up a thing, too. But the difference is, when Isabelle and Maia find out, they get furious with Simon for it, and rightly so, though it was a little hypocritical on Izzy's part considering she was dating other people, too. She justified it as it's because Simon doesn't know the people she's also been seeing and she does know Maia, (which I thought was a stupid justification, but she still did it). Well, if Cassandra Clare thinks that's wrong, then isn't it wrong for Tessa to be going back and forth between two parabatai? Simon is in the doghouse with Maia and Isabelle for quite a while because he liked both of them and didn't know how to break it off with one of them, but Tessa doesn't get any amount of criticism from the two boys because of her actions. One of the things that really upset me in the Jem/Tessa/Will love triangle, though, was the way Tessa and Will, an hour after Jem died, fall into bed together. It's attempted to be justified because they thought they were going to die, but what they should have been doing was trying to find a way to escape or making a plan to fight back in the morning, not having sex when Tessa's fiance and Will's parabatai just died, even if Jem gave them his blessing. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and made me lose respect for Will and Tessa, even if I still like the two of them. I just don't like them as much as I used to because of that. A lot of people try to rip into Jem because he wanted to meet with Tessa once a year, saying it was wrong how they hid it from Will, but Cassandra Clare confirmed on her site that Will knew all about it and was fine with it. He never felt betrayed by Jem and Tessa meeting up once a year to talk for an hour and have platonic interactions and that Jem and Tessa's interactions were always platonic and they never betrayed Will. She also said the only reason Will didn't go with them was because Silent Brothers have to sever all ties with the Shadowhunters, but Jem tells Tessa to tell no one because Silent Brothers are supposed to be detached from people and she technically has Nephilim blood, so people might try to stop them. No one didn't include Will, though. He knew. Another thing that always bothered me about everyone's treatment of Jem is that people tend not to consider his feelings until it's too late. Everyone assumes that Jem will never get angry or be affected negatively by something. When Will goes to the opium den in Clockwork Prince, no one has ANY idea how that is going to affect Jem. Not Will, not Tessa, not Charlotte, no one! Of course that's going to affect him negatively, of course he is going to be upset and feel like Will just slapped him in the face. And Will apologizes later for it, saying he didn't realize that he was making a mockery of Jem's illness, so Jem forgives him, and I forgave him, but it just shows something about Jem: he always is there for everyone else and does his best to notice and care for their feelings, but hardly anyone seems to do the same for him. Everyone--both characters and readers--get caught up in the bright shining star that is Will, (those are Casasndra Clare's words about Will being the one who burns bright and is quick to catch attention), but oftentimes overlook Jem because he's always been so stable despite the horrors of his past that they don't realize that sometimes, something is going to be too much, and that made me extremely angry with how the other characters treated Jem. Also, I remember something about how Will was compared to a bright burning star and Jem to a steady, unwavering flame, and that really saddened me, because in Jem's POV of his first meeting with Tessa, he had been thinking about romantic love right before she came in, and he thought, "For that was what love was, wasn't it--to burn bright in someone else's eyes?" Obviously, Jem never was that to Tessa, so he deserves much better than her. He derserves someone who loves him fully and completely, not in a might as well hook up with him because Will isn't available and I guess I do care about him, just not as much as Will kind of way.

thank you so much for this comment!!! you brought up a lot of well thought out, articulate points that i completely agree with - i also wish that we would romanticising genuine, kind men and not get so hung up on the 'bad boy' trope. i never picked up on the thing about love and fire and jem's pov that you mentioned, which makes this whole thing even more upsetting. maybe cassandra clare should have considered turning jem's storyline into one about unrequited love rather than trying to force an unbalanced love triangle. anyway, thank you again!!!!

@@evalikeayva6567 You're welcome! And thank you for this video :). I'm glad to know there are other like-minded people out there who think Jem deserved better. It would have been interesting for Jem's storyline to have been one of unrequited love rather than the love triangle. I think the series would have been much more interesting if we had gotten more of him in it away from his relationship to Tessa and Will. I wish we had gotten more of his POV in the Infernal Devices, but at least Cassandra Clare wrote two pieces from Jem's perspective of scenes in the Infernal Devices--Burning Bright and An Offering of Moonlight--that can be found online, and the Ghosts of Shadow Market, which are a series of short stories told mostly from the perspective of Jem post the Infernal Devices. I'm going to be honest, I liked the relationship between Jem and Will as parabatai much better than Wessa or Jessa, too. We really don't emphasize on the importance of friendship enough in society, but when you find a true friend who you can be completely and entirely yourself with, you have forged a very special bond that will last forever.

Like he died few days ago and she was crying for 2 hours with Will and then they slept together, what the actual fuck? The fact they thought they will die does not make it right at all or the fact they felt guilty. And yeah Jem gave them his blessing, but to jump on each other a few days after his death? Wow, just wow. It looks like they were waiting for him to die and it makes me so freaking mad. I count is as a betrayal, and I really hate betrayals.

ISTG when I first read Clockwork Prince back in the day, so many people were just hating on Jem for proposing to Tessa. They called him a “bad friend” “Inconsiderate” and “selfish” when he the purest person in that series. The other common thing I saw was that people would be like “DOESNT JEM SEE THE WAY THAT WILL LOOKS AT TESSA?!?” And I’m like if the roles were reversed and Will proposed, than none of you would complaining. Do Jem’s feelings not matter? Is Jem not allowed to be happy? Will’s an asshole. I don’t care if it was an act to protect the people he loved but that doesn’t excuse the stuff he did.

I think that Tessa loved Will and Jem equally, if I remember correctly she says that she wouldn't have been able to love Will the way she did if she had not loved Jem as well and vice versa, but I do agree that the author chose to focus more on Wessa because, as you mentioned, she prefers the 'impossible love' theme. Also, I do believe that the way Cassandra Claire put it made it very easy to interpret it as though Tessa wanted to marry Jem out of pity (the cave scene between Will and Tessa kinda supports this), but then again, she did wait for him for a very long time and jumped at the chance to marry him once he got cured and they had lovely scenes in TID. My favourite relationship out of the whole Shadowhunters Chronicles was the one between Will and Jem because I thought that it was just beautiful and I loved the characters (Jem slightly more than Will). I always thought that Jem not getting angry when he found out that Will was in love with Tessa was down to him being more mature and wiser overall than a lot of the other characters (because he was facing imminent death daily, his parents had been killed by a demon etc) but more so because he thought that Will was the best man out there, as he always sees the best in him even when he gets angry/frustrated/sad because of Will; given that he knew that he would either die or turn into a Silent Brother, thus leaving Tessa, I think that Jem wanted a good man to be with her, and who better than his own parabatai whom he loved and held in such high regard? I also think that he felt a bit relieved considering that his two favourite people would be there for one another when he couldn't and that they would be good for each other. The whole Herongraystairs dynamic was amazing to me because even if one of them was gone, they were still around in a way; for example, Will kept trying to find reasons to visit Jem or to bring him to the institute, Wessa named their son after Jem, Jessa named their daughter after Will, Jem still mourns the loss of his parabatai, Tessa keeps wearing things that they gave her etc. Secretly, I am hoping that we get a scene from the future when Will and Jem, and even Tessa, are reunited in the afterlife (although this scene will break my heart). The last thing I want to say is that they should have been a throuple although I get that it would have been very scandalous and uncommon for those times.

I think that why Cassie may have highlighted Tessa's love for Will more than her love for Jem was because it was forbidden. Cassie tends to focus largely on forbidden love because it's exciting and thrilling, I suppose but in this way, she neglects non-forbidden love. I read the books a couple of years ago so I don't recall his words exactly but maybe he was bitter but he didn't let it show. Maybe he just wanted his parabatai to be with someone who could live alongside him and though he dislikes the idea of it maybe he thinks 'I am a dead man, what do I have to lose?' and pushes his parabatai to have a better future. I think that perhaps his point of view needed to be explored more by Cassie. She had a lot of potential to explore with Jem but she stuck to making him an obstacle of love.

He always believed that he would die soon, and therefore lived a life in which he did not dare to ask for anything, merely a traveler and without greed. A lonely existence like that. I especially never assumed he was bland, just "nice". He always somehow felt lonely to me, a little tragic. I also think that Clare generally focuses on the romantic aspect of everything. She is a great writer but to her, Love is the most revolutionary aspect in the world while there are simple things such as friendship and familial love that she frankly disregards or later in the series (TDA) make seem like a burden to the MC. Charlotte and Henry were greatly disregarded and were only credited for their 'upkeep of the institute' and 'inventing of many things'. Then, there's Gabriel and Gideon who instantly fell in love with their respective S.O', I mean, what of the brotherly relationship? What of Gabriel finally leaving his father's side and staying by his brother? No, there must only be romance. I see this as a downfall in Clare's stories and I truly feel bad.

I feel like Tessa definitely loves both Jem and Will, they all adore each other. I definitely agree that Jem deserved better and should have been allowed to express anger. No character should be expected to always be so submissive to others needs over themselves. Tessa is very much not overpowered, she is the granddaughter of a greater demon, her powers are completely suitable if not a little underwhelming. There would be no plot in the book except for platonic fluff between will and Jem if not for Tessa (don't get me wrong I do love me some parabatai bonding, but still) Tessa never actually enters battle like the others do either? She always has to be protected by the others. Will and Tessa keeping secrets from Jem was solely for the purpose of NOT hurting him. If the infernal devices was where Jem's story ended, I would probably feel the same way as you, but as things are with him happy in Devon with Tessa, Kit and Mina, I'm fine with it.

Just read The Infernal Devices a few months ago. How could Tessa and Will betray Jem like that??? And he was totally fine with that. Was it really necessary for Wessa to sleep together right after learning Jem was dead??? They even enjoy doing it (that's what I get from Tessa's POV), in normal cirncumstances that would be fine, but Jem had just 'died'. They didn't apologize, even if Jem didn't seem to want to hear a word about it. I wouldn't forgive my best friend nor my fiance if they did something like that to me, and certainly I wouldn't even consider being back together with said fiance. And as much as Tessa tried to convince me that she was in love with both of them, it was way too obvious who was going to 'win' in the love triangle. Jem's POVs are almost non-existent, it's really hard to side with him, with Will always getting attention from the other characters. Will is always despicted as the hero. Tessa never stops thinking about him even when she's making out with Jem, but it never happens the other way around. I like the epilogue, but I could have loved it if Jem was given the same relevance (and POVs) as Will (based on the fact that Tessa loves both of them equally) or if Tessa had always made clear that Will was her one true love and, after years of being alone, decided to give her and Jem's friendship a chance to become something more

I was so devastated when Tessa was with Will. I really didn't like him. He was awful to others even after he realised that he wasn't cursed. Also asking Tessa to break up with Jem was so mean. Tessa didn't owe him anything. He was cold and rude to her and lost his chance. Mean and rude is not hot. Especially if you are looking for a marriage.

Tessa loves both of them equally. Also, you can love someone while being married. The ending was the best but the worst.

I find this perspective so interesting because the general consensus I’ve see on tumblr in the fandom is that *Will* is the one who deserved better, and Jem is obviously Cassie’s favorite character. I’ve seen so many people say that Will and Tessa’s marriage was constantly overshadowed by Tessa’s feelings for Jem and that Cassie treated Wessa not as an equal pairing, but as a mere footnote in the story of Jessa, that seeing this title genuinely gave me whiplash lol. I do see your points though, so I feel like maybe Cassie genuinely likes Will and Jem equally? I’m not sure how else both sides could have equally compelling evidence for why their ship was done dirty.

The parabatai bond is controversial, because if Tessa loves both of them, that doesn't mean she loves Jem and Will at the same time. For example, in the mortal instruments, Clary loves Jace, but not necessarily loves Alec, which have a parabatai bond with Jace, she is just Alec's friend. So I think this love triangle in the infernal devices is so hotter and painful to read, where the friendship is a topic in decancy. A flame fading.

Of course I mean I his maybe the only book where a I have seen the girl loves two guys and the two guys are totally okay with it maybe because of the parabatai bond more than anything but Will did feel jealousy... Jem shouldn't have married Tessa after will died and he's gonna die anyway he could find another love it was possible he could... when Tessa was with Will she didn't think of Jem she's didn't compare him with Jem whereas whenever she was with Jem she compared him with Will like always and besides they bonded over Will in the first few times all their conversations ended up being about Will. If Will was available she wouldn't have agreed to the proposal surely if only Will hadn't been late or Jem was late in proposing there wouldn't have been any complications. Again we didn't see much of Jem I meant his character is what we see as other people describe it not from his perspective. Even Cecily probably got more pov than Jem being just in the 3rd book we got to get a clear insight of almost everyone Gabriel, Charlotte, Gedion, Sophie, Cecily, and Magnus too but Jem was one of the most prominent character yet we didn't get much of his pov... What we got from him was only his love for Tessa and Will and him dying but his past his feelings about himself his character I didn't understand much

Well yeah. Tessa and Will were made for each other... so Jem should've gotten something better than just being Tessa's second option. And god' he deserved just someone who could see him as its everything... me por example!! However. He's alive and we all love hin 🥺💔

there are multiple series (the mortal instruments, the infernal devices etc etc) which all feature the shadow hunter characters :)

She doesn't break Will and Jem's friendship. it's kinda their fault. They both would have been incomplete without her.
