Why Jesus Calmed the Storm on the Sea of Galilee

Jesus isn’t just flexing when he calms the storm on the Sea of Galilee. So what is he doing? The answer is found in texts from Job, Psalms, Exodus, and elsewhere, where we find the same (Hebrew and Greek) language of Yahweh “rebuking” bodies of water. So, how does Jonah’s story shed light on this crossing? How is the Sea of Galilee like the Red Sea? And what is the answer to the disciples’ question, “Who then is this?” In this week’s video on “Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes,” we will find the answers to those questions as Chad Bird guides us through a number of OT passages that provide the “big picture” of what is happening in Mark 4:35ff.

How greatful I am for having found your channel Dr. Bird. Thank you again for teaching us God's word. Any chance for starting a series on NT Greek lessons? I'd love going back to it!

Mr Bird, what geographic pregnancy is present in Jesus instructing his disciples to wait for Him post-resurrection in GALILEE? My Sunday school class was discussing that and no one knew for sure except that it was where Jesus had performed miracles at during His ministry

Most likely, it centered on the Gentile mission. Galilee was known as Galilee *of the Gentiles*. Because Jesus was commissioning his disciples to make disciples of all the nations, that is, of all the Gentiles, it was the perfect place for such a mission to be announced.

I imagine that on the Titanic there were a lot of prayers being said when things went bad. In this text no one prays. The disciples appeal to Jesus face-to-face. Jesus acts as Yahweh.
