Most people don't have the time of day to think about their situation. You can perceive things the way you do the same way I perceive them or not. One fact is that Freezy wasn't raised in harsh environments like JME, I mentioned this because everyone's upbringing has an effect on how one thinks. I wrote money with quotations because that is correct punctuation, nothing more. I'm talking about the topic they're speaking on, and "money" is made up from thin air with no actual value, seeing as every country is majorly in debt other than the East. Money ain't weird, lol it's a necessity that is also fake.

@@johnmitchell2269 You would use your time (service) to pay for goods. Which is what you do today, you just currently trade your time for money rather than directly trading your time for objects. Money is obviously a good way to bank your time to afford bigger things or trade with people that might not want the service you provide. I'm not saying money isn't a useful tool however look at some countries inflation rate, you're talking 360% in a year. That is basically saying to the people that hold that specific currency, that the money they hold isn't real and the value you think you hold can be ripped from you pretty quickly.

JME is right. When we lived in small tribes/communities, we would leverage our products and services to trade with others as we all chipped in to help each other. This was called bartering. As market towns and cities began forming, this wouldn't work. The person selling cranberries may find it hard to have a house built for them. So, Cal is right to point this out, however, we had a solution to this. We had to establish "what does everyone find valuable? Regardless of a product or service?" The answer was [and still is] GOLD. We would trade gold for products and services. Then, we realised that having gold everywhere was a security risk. So banks were created. If you put an ounce of gold in the bank, the bank would effectively give you a piece of paper saying 'I owe you 1 ounce of gold'. So, effectively, that piece of paper was actually worth something (an ounce of gold in this case). The reason why I agree with JME saying that money isn't 'real' is because in 1971, President Nixon removed gold-backed money and created what is called FIAT currency. So the money you spend since then isn't being backed by anything. In fact, if you were to deposit £10,000 in a bank, the bank will then loan 10x that amount out to people that want to borrow it (now there is £100,000 in circulation created out of thin air) This is called fractional-reserve banking if you're interested. Let's say one of the people borrowing that money bought a car with it. The car dealer has taken that money and put it into a bank, to which they 10x that too and repeat the cycle and create a bubble. This is why when there is an economic crisis, people get scared and line up outside their bank to get their money out but they can't because the banks don't have enough to give to everyone. It's also the reason why banks liquidate. Northern Rock was a great example of this; people queueing up outside, demanding their money back. They couldn't get it so they lost their money. This is also why banks have to be bailed out to stop this which completely absolves the banks from any responsibility or accountability of failure. This is because the money doesn't exist. So, in that sense, money isn't real. Remember that scene in Wolf of Wall Street with Matthew Mcconaughey and Leo Di Caprio, when Matthew's character explains how traders get rich because the clients don't actually cash in their money? As long as they do that, the traders make money but to the client, they're just numbers on a screen. That is, until they cash out. Then it becomes real. Their job is to not make that happen. Yes, money grants you access to products and services but that's because it is being held together with everyone tacitly agreeing that FIAT money is worth something. We could all just decide that we don't think it's worth anything and the game stops. This is EXACTLY why crypto is a threat because it is doing just that. I hope this was helpful.

Initially money was a way to measure the amount of gold you have at home and when you were paying with cash it was essentially a way to say “I owe you this much amount in gold” then over time that gold was managed by the treasury and that cash was how much gold from the treasury you owned and the scarcity of that money was based on the scarcity of gold. Eventually over time the money became not backed by gold but because it has been around for so long and has been in use in the market, it still holds value as people value it. Money only exists so long as people value it, if they don’t the money is worthless and now money is gone and it’s now just pieces of paper because the only difference between money and paper is it’s value. Now that money has been digitized, money isn’t even tangible therefore we are literally valuing something that isn’t even real. Imagine how crazy it was to back in the day where people worked in gold, that when you work you get a random number assigned to you that you can use to give other people a bigger number. So yeah, Money isn’t real

@@mabduliNope, we’ve done the same thing with precious metals for thousands of years. We would dilute the concentration of gold in gold coins to artificially inflate the money supply. We have ALWAYS done this. Also, gold is just a shiny rock with little utility. The ONLY reason it has value is because we arbitrarily chose it to represent some form of money, the exact same way we did with fiat. The only difference is fixed supply. They’re both only valuable because we decided for it to be valuable. It doesn’t matter is gold/silver is rare if it has no use case. E.g. give a caveman a piece of gold and it has no value. It’s the exact same scenario just fixed vs non-fixed supply. In which case you should probably read Keynes. The point is, both are arbitrary, so why is “gold” considered the holy grail of money and why should we constrain ourselves to the supply of gold, why not silver, why not our own supply. The push in recent years from “gold bugs” are uneducated chronically online randoms who’ve never taken an econ class in their lives.

Money is a medium for trading goods and services. You can trade for example food for a certain service but what if you don't have the required food at the time you require that service, or maybe the person providing the service doesn't want the food you offer. Well you trade the service with money and the other person can then trade that money for food or whatever good/service they want from a different person.

Money is simply an extension of the bartering system that allows universal trading of things. Back in the day if you wanted something, you had to trade something of equal value for that thing. For example: three eggs for a bottle of milk. But what happens if you want a bottle of milk but can't offer anything the person providing the milk needs in return? That is why we invented money. You can trade $2 for that bottle of milk, and that person can then use those $2 to trade for something else they actually need. It's like a wild card. Money can be traded for ANYTHING you need, rather than directly trading two specific objects that both parties need. The amount of money you have is thus simply a measure of your buying power. The more money you have, the more you can buy with it and the more power you have in a society where money makes is the key to obtaining every service and every object.

Money isn't real but what it represents is. Depending on where you get your money, what most of us call cash is a measurement of value in time. Time taken to find and extract raw recourses, the it took someone else to turn those into ingredients, the time it took another few people to bring it to your restaurant and the time your restaurant took to cook it up for you and serve it to you. That and all the time it took for those people to learn how to do those things that we cant do ourselves. That is where the value of money comes from. If you cant be bothered to spend 30 mins cooking your own food, you instead use the money you earned from 10 minutes at your job (adding on all your years of experience and education to account for the other 20 mins) to have someone else do it for you.

Money represents a transaction that justifies its value to oneself. J is suggesting that giving and taking is natural, in any walk of life. Money was MADE, as a tangible way for humans to understand that said transaction means this, instead of trusting that a simple act of sharing can be anything as long as it’s coming from a state of kindness. Money now has become such a focus in our lives that now most people BELIEVE money “exists” just like air or water, as J is saying. But ultimately it was created by man, and it’s got to the point where nobody can be satisfied with being alive and all that comes with it, without a justifiable, even transaction. Just exist guys. Money is a receipt to say you hold that value, be it precious metals (money exists) or fiat money, which most major currencies are today, fiat currencies technically don’t exist, hence why governments can “print” money when they like since borrowing is so high. The paper is a receipt, allowing you to trade it for something of the same or less value, our coins, the precious metals, hold the same value per unit as the fiat currency you hold.

I think what JME is saying is that money only has value because we belive it too. Back in the 70s when money was backed by gold it did have an intrinsic value. But ever since money came off the gold stadard it's just a peice of paper or a digital figure in our bank accounts. Basically it's all based off of trust. For example a peice of a4 paper might mean nothing to me but to someone else that peice of paper might be a means of oppurtunity to express oneself, a blank canvas to portay your thoughts,feelings, ideas and creativity; therefore that bit of paper being valueable to you. All just depends how you think about it.
