Anything that Joe has ever said about playing needs to be learned. Really looking forward to this one.

Brilliant video. Everything Joe played was alway perfect. The man played with white gloves. Every note and chord so clear and melodic

Joe is obviously the man, but not starting out in jazz myself, the guitarist that first sent my in this direction was João Gilberto.

I am just sitting a Cafe so sorry I haven't watch this video in detail yet, but over the last couple of weeks I have been trying to play along with Joe Pass accompanying Ella on Gee Baby and also Easy Living. I couldn't get very much of it at all but something amazing happened, sneaked up on me, I felt I was becoming more creative with chords.

Brilliant Jens. As an aside Joe rarely spoke of flat five or tritone substitutions.He prefered describing this as approaching the target chord from a semitone above.It is the KISS principle!!!
@JensLarsen17 күн бұрын
Thanks! He does actually have a section on tritone subs/flat five in his Guitar Style book.

One of my weaknesses is trying to be too rhythmically intricate. I appreciate Jens pointing out the simplicity of Joe Pass.

Thanks, Jens, especially for the transcriptions. I did once hear Ella and Joe in concert. Plus a shout-out to Tuck (Andress) and Patti. I heard them several times early in their careers. Their debt to Ella and Joe was clear. I would round-out my Top-3 with John Pizzarelli, who comps so well *while singing*. I would note that George Benson never really comped while singing.

I love how Joe Pass used some voicings that don't include 3rd. It goes to tell that "always include 3rds and 7ths in voicings" is a suggestion, not a rule.

Beautiful playing from Joe Pass as always. Seems to me that a very difficult part of this would be coming up with a descending chord progression like what he did with the turnaround on I’ve got the World on a String. And adding to that, knowing which melody note to keep on top for ALL the chords! Truly amazing stuff
@JensLarsen17 күн бұрын
As great as he is, I don't think he does that on the spot. He most likely has standard solutions for progressions (at least that is how I and the people I know approach it)

Joe Pass talking about it being an “illusion” reminds me of a concert I attended. Bobby McFerrin was guest conduction the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. During the intermission, he came out and vocalized an impromptu jazz trio. No way that can be anything but the “illusion” Joe was talking about.

I don't understand why someone would not approve chords + walking bass? I never heard a criticism about that. Many masters teach and use it, eg Emily Remler also.
@kevindonnelly76117 күн бұрын
Chords and walking bass is ok. Joe Pass says he doesn't play (walking) bass all the time - just when it feels natural. When you stop playing walking bass for a short while in a song - then bring it back - it's very effective. You likely wouldn't play walking bass if you had a bass player. Emily Remler was sensational. She left us too soon.
