Wait how is Steve more human than John? Humans are inherently flawed. Steve was too pure, no one could relate to him. Unless you are an egotist and you think you can do no wrong.

The thing I hate about John's story is that he's essentially dragged through the mud because he killed a Flag Smasher. Something he was 100% justified in doing. It would've been different had the Flag Smasher actually surrendered before John killed him, but the reality is that he didn't and yet the series treats John as some sort of murderer, when in reality, he just killed a murderer who tried to murder him moments before killing him and likely prevented the deaths of innocent bystanders in the process. It's also why I, in the process, despise Sam and Bucky, because THEY caused this shit by being petty and not willing to work with John, or even give him baseline respect and then they have the gaul to gang up on him when they are the ones who are in the wrong. This really ruins the series for me. John could've been this tragic anti-hero that he does end up becoming, but we see him acting justifiably so it ruins that transition. And then we are supposed to act like Sam is this pure good man, when in reality he acted extremely petulant and petty, which runs contrary to the whole "good man" angle.

Yeah, John did what a soldier would. Should we also be mad at our own soldiers for killing other men who want to tear our country apart? No. John is a soldier he was defending himself and his country. He wasn't perfect like Steve, but he was still a good man despite what people thought about him. His story is very tragic because he is expected to be Steve because he is Capitan America. He isn't him he tried to be the best he could be. In truth, no one, not even Bucky or Sam, could be Steve. I don't think he was the right choice for Capitan America. The mantle was just dropped in his lap. He didn't have a chance at being Capitan America because of how he was raised,trained,and conditioned, but he is still a good man.

@Tobs Onasanya he could've. But let me ask you this, if you were serving in the U.S. military in Iraq, would you be trying to save the enemy. Would you "knock them out" even though these men want to kill you and your friends and destroy your country. Or would you kill them to protect yourself and everything you care about. It would be a different conversation if John was given a choice. If the man was surrendering and he killed him, that would make it murder. But the fact that man didn't surrender means John was totally justified in doing what he did. John is a soldier, soldiers kill to protect themselves and their country. It doesn't matter if he is dressed like the flag or not. He was threatened, and his country was threatened, so he handled it like a soldier.

I think in the inevitable Dark Avengers movie, Val will try to make him do something horrible, but he'll stare her down and let her know that "Mercy bears richer fruit than strict justice." and leave the team. I fully agree with you about John Walker. At the end of the first episode, I too immediately started to hate him because he was given the shield behind Sam's back. However, at the start of episode 2, I slowly started to understand and even like him. This is due to the way he feels about taking the mantle given to him by the government. He's honored but remains humbled about it. Sam and Bucky simply don't treat him with any respect in return. That slowly started his fall from grace. Wyatt Russell was awesome in this show. The people who sent the actor death threats because of his character are not only assholes, but idiots too.

In defense of John Walker, many people compared him to Steve in every aspect. They said that Steve faces insults all the time when he started becoming Cap yet he didn’t go rogue like Walker...except that the only two people who were jerks to him are Tommy Lee Jones and a soldier who got punched in the face by Peggy. Peggy, Dr. Erskine, Howard Stark, Bucky and Howling Commandos all supported him. Meanwhile, Walker only had Lemar. Sam and Bucky hate him just because he’s not Steve. So when Lemar was gone, Walker was alone and serum just drove him crazier. Not to mention that government shits on Walker immediately after he killed 1 guy. Comparing Walker to Steve in every aspects doesn’t seem fair to him because their conditions are very different.

I remember in the beginning of the series, I hated Walker, but then I managed to understand him and empathize with him, then as the series went on I started to hate Bucky and Sam, because they were just complete assholes to Walker, he saved their lives and got him out of jail, hell he even gave them good options to work as a team, but they were still assholes, then I hated Sam with all my heart, because of course Karli deserves to be heard and justified for her actions because she's just a kid, being that she killed innocent people, but John who just killed a criminal terrorist who was partly to blame for his friend's death, deserves to be beaten and humiliated. The worst thing is that they didn't even bother to say sorry or good job John when he went to help in the final chapter, hell if it wasn't for him, the politicians would have died in the truck (Sam only took advantage that John managed to stop the fall, because if it wasn't for John, the truck would have fallen, Sam is strong, but he doesn't have super strength or super resistance to hold a falling truck)

I have to kinda disagree with you one John, I have always seen him as a good character in the show, it's way different in the comics. However he lost it for a moment when his best friend, someone that fought side by side with, someone he saw as a brother and more was brutally killed by terrorist. ( Yes Sam they are terrorist, get over it.) The man has PTSD and seeing that, the one person that was keeping him grounded just taken away because of extremist, he just snaps. He was just not in his right mind. Now I agree part of that is the fact that he had been made into what he was by the US government, but I don't see the darkness, the pride and what not you see. What I see is a man that wanted to do good, to be as good as Steve, but because of his training, that moment, and being betrayed by a group of spineless politicians that made him. He became disillusioned like so many Americans today. However even with that he's not going to let that stop him from being a symbol and doing what's right, he just doesn't want to wear the lie that was made for him anymore. Then again that's what I see, but great video.

He didnt want to replace Steve, he just wanted to do what he was asked to do. How would that make him bad? People hated him for some really weird reasons. Sure, in the next few episodes, we see that he is about to crack, that he isnt used to work in a supersoldier related missions, that he is unefficient. When Wakandans beat his ass, Walker realizes that not only is he useless, but also that he isnt respected. Thats why he takes the serum. He is a really human character, he made some mistakes, but ultimately he just wants to do the right thing, even if sometimes the definition of that is a bit blurry.

The greatest irony of this show is summarized by a Steve Rogers quote. We’ve heard Steve say, “I don’t like bullies”, because so many people did mistreat him before becoming Captain America and even right at the beginning of his Captain America career. In this show we see Sam, Bucky, the Dora Milaje, and eventually the literal government bully and screw Walker over time and time again, right up until the end, when they need his help in the last fight, during which, he manages to actually help save innocent people, showing us that he is a good man, and is still capable of doing heroic things, meanwhile, I have to sit here and root for the literal bullies of the show and feel bad for literal terrorists. The writing and priorities of the writers was absolutely garbage, when I can feel more sympathy for a man descending into anger and brutality, instead of the so-called heroes of the actual show. The only plus side I can see to this, is Bucky and Sam realizing what it actually means to be Captain America, and more importantly, like Steve Rogers, and that if there’s a future fight scene with them and Walker, they realize that it was their own self-centered actions and unwarranted anger at John that helped turn him into the US Agent, and they actually apologize, but knowing Disney, and current Marvel writers, that will likely not happen, because they’re about as dense as a Lead Bucket filled with Mercury. As a big Captain America fan, on my second watch through of this show, I really saw how much they’re willing to tear down the legacy of one of the literal heroes of the entire property.

I think they were doing well with him, but his redemption felt unearned and rushed in the final episode. It feels like they just forced him into a happy upbeat spot because thats how you end stories, not because that made sense for the character. He just sort of "shakes off" the massive mental burden they did such a good job of giving weight previously, so easily and so quickly. He is jogging around and quipping with the boys in minutes. And the tone with his black suit scene, they play Val as more sinister on her initial appearance, but now suddenly its time to wrap up so its all giggles and smiles and hopes for the future. It just felt a little incongruent in a way that damaged the overall character they had built, in my opinion. I don't mean to only speak negatively, but I think the quality of his arc through the earlier episodes speaks for itself and is covered in this video, which I would mostly agree with.
@CaptainPikeachu
@CaptainPikeachu 3 жыл бұрын
He’s not redeemed though. They didn’t rush an unearned redemption because it’s not a redemption. He saves the truck because that’s always been the person he is, saving the truck was not redemption, it was him behaving in character because a man who earned THREE Medals of Honor is not someone who’s just gonna let people die. It wasn’t redemption, it was a reminder to people that the lens with which people have been viewing John through was incorrect and he’s always been capable of goodness and heroics. And once he let go of that anger and rage, he had no issues with Sam and Bucky because he never really had problems with them to begin with, so working together is basically normal because they were always on the same side. And Walker’s problems aren’t over anyways, it wasn’t wrapped up all neatly, him being back isn’t necessarily a good thing because he’s essentially gone from following one institution’s orders to following another. He’s still twitching his head, which is a visual indication that his troubles are still with him. His path is dangerously uncertain.
@R0B1NG5
@R0B1NG5 3 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainPikeachu That's basically a no true Scotsman argument. Even the actor in interviews and people discussing the show describe it that way. It was an attempt at redemption, just because it was so fast and easy and badly executed that it barely registered, it doesn't mean an attempt wasn't made. Look at him before episode 6. He is unhinged shouting at the government, losing his military career, fighting Sam and bucky, losing lemur, having that heavy interaction with Lamars parents. All that emotional baggage just evaporates and goes no where. They do not even hint further issues for the rest of the show. There will be if he shows up again, of course, because thats how drama works. But in terms of what they depict in this show he is nothing but happy suddenly after the truck scene. The guy who beat an unarmed accomplice to death in public now tells us "mercy bears better fruit". I'm sorry, that's missing a few points in the character arc. Sharon Carter is played off as 100x more sinister than walker and Val in their final scenes. He is laughing and happy, it's framed in a completely wholesome way. I could not disagree more with you. The show needed an extra episode or two to work some of its story lines out with more of a depicted ramp up and build to the climax.
@CaptainPikeachu
@CaptainPikeachu Жыл бұрын
@@R0B1NG5 And the writers also made it clear that at the end of the day, what's right is right and Walker knows that, and that not having him ultimately still trying to save people would be out of character. Wanting people to recognize that there's some good in him and that he's not a full blown villain so showing some of his redemptive qualities is not necessarily them rushing to just redeem the character. It only seems that way if people chooses to ignore the established good qualities the character also does have. Him shouting at the government isn't even unhinged, that's just a person being pissed off, given his super soldier strength, he easily could have crushed that podium if he was truly unhinged, but he was restraining back his strength and only simply walked away. That's not someone being unhinged, that's someone being understandably pissed off and upset but still having self control. Yes he did go through a lot of traumatic things, but that's why Episode 6 starts with him still in a bad place and aiming at getting after Karli. But at the end of the day, Walker is still a good soldier who cares about saving people, so he gives up revenge when there's something more important happening right in front of him, reminding him of what he and Lemar was fighting for, what he became Cap for, to SAVE LIVES. And he's not just suddenly happy after the truck scene. Walker's real issue was never with Sam and Bucky, in fact, he spent most of Episode 2 trying to get along and be friends with them, he wants to be working with them, so it's no shock there that from his end, most of the animosity is gone once he lets go of the shield to save people and there's a bigger issue. Him and Sam and Bucky were ultimately all on the same side all along. And we see Walker being contemplative during Sam's speech, in fact the camera focuses on him at numerous points, and we see him seriously being reflective about what he hears Sam say. The anger that led him to fight Sam and Bucky in the warehouse was his own trauma and his own guilt, and needing to project that at someone else to try to process everything, but once he chose to save the truck, he's coming back from that emotional spiral to realize what's really the more important thing. And at the end of the day, Karli being gone is still gonna be a relief for him emotionally. Yes he jokes here and there with Bucky, to middling effect, and he says that "mercy" line, but it doesn't mean he's happy. Being glad of a job well done in the moment doesn't mean happiness. And as for Walker and Val's scenes, it's clear that there's something shifty with Val but they're still trying to keep under wraps but she's no less sinister than Sharon, and Walker literally in that scene is still twitching his head, a tic that we see him do in previous episodes that indicate his emotional troubles, thus clearly signaling that those issues haven't gone away just because he is happy in the moment. And to be frank, why wouldn't he be happy when he still has a job after he lost everything else.

Yeah I totally agree. Me being someone who thought the show was actually average overall and didn't really like the direction Sam went, I thought John Walker was a complete standout and masterpiece of a character. I could tell that the show wanted us to hate him upon his introduction, but I honestly didn't. I disliked the idea of what he was which was a governmental pawn Cap, but I think that Sam and Bucky treated him too harshly. The man hadn't done anything wrong. Ofc he was a bit arrogant and insecure, but the man didn't deserve hate just for not being Steve. Even after he did something wrong when he killed the Flagsmasher, he hadn't really 'done something wrong.' Ofc, killing someone who's begging for their life and not fighting back is morally wrong, but if we're being honest, his only true mistake that got him punished was doing it in public. Steve has killed before. Ofc mostly in The First Avenger because it was war, but basically idk if it was truly a disrespect of the shield like many believe it to be. The main reason that the government ousted him was because it would create a giant PR mess and make them look bad to keep him as Cap. John did what most of us would have done if our best friend or family had been killed by people within our reach and its an understandably ugly truth to accept, but that's what Walker was: the ugly truth of what many would be as Captain America.

If I had the chance to work with the heroes the hero I am replacing worked with id want to hands down, and if the whole time they just dismissed me and dislike me for no real reason I would get mad too. If I had the chance to gain power in order to be a better hero I would take that chance. And if my best friend died right in front of me I would be in a rage too. The similarities yet differences in the dynamic between John, Bucky, and Sam and Pete and Happy is something I just noticed. Quite similar scenarios but the roles are kind of switched. In far from home, Peter laments that he can’t live up to the Potential of Tony and “be the next Iron Man” but happy tells him that he can never be Tony. Tony was Tony, a one of a kind guy much like Steve. And that he instead should focus on being the best Peter Parker/Spider Man he can be. Mirroring that we have John in Peters shoes taking up the mantle of a great hero but where as Pete was trying to live up to Tonys accomplishments John admitted and accepted that he will never be Steve Rogers but he wants to be the best Captain America and John Walker he can be now that he carries the responsibility of the shield where Buck and Sam (mirroring Happy) essentially laments that John isn’t like Steve and believes he (and themselves for the matter) shouldn’t carry the shield or title because of it.

There was never any good reason to hate Walker at ANY point, post OR pre- "redemption." I immediately understood that he always placed serving his country, and thus his fellow countrymen above all else. He displayed that with his service in the Army and what he went through in Afghanistan. He didn't seek out being the new Captain America, and you could tell he didn't initially want that, but his government chose him, and he saw it as his duty to fulfill rather than back away from. In truth, John Walker was a victim. His only crime was serving his country; he never should have been chosen to begin with. Because he had already been through more than anyone should have. But he wasn't the type to disobey when his country chose him. He was taken advantage of, and then punished for what became the natural conclusion. That, and Bucky and Sam were total jerks for no good reason. "You're not Steve so screw you pal." I mean wtf ?! They didn't give Walker a chance to screw up before they disliked him. They IMMEDIATELY disliked him, for such a stupid reason. And let us not forget the Flag Smashers were the DEFINITION of terrorists.

I absolutely loved John Walker's Character. I always see people hating on him, just because he was Captain America's replacement while completely ignoring the actual character. One of the main reasons as to why I adore this character, was how human he is. Yes, Steve Rogers was also human but he was super human and often felt to be on an untouchable-unflawable-perfect level, John Walker was so relatable and was our window into reality and what it actually means to become a national hero. As much as killing people is bad, MCU fans should not pretend like they would not have reacted the same way or similarly that John did when his best friend died. At the end of the day, the US government couldn't care less about their agents killing somebody in another country and were just using John as a scapegoat. They discarded everything he had done for that country because of that incident but where was that same energy towards Bruce Banner after what happened in Sokovia? what about Tony Stark? the two guys who CREATED ULTRON. When I finished watching the episode where he was stripped of his titles, i was just so upset about how he did everything he was told to do, exceeded the expectations but nobody even gave him a chance. Before they could even hear his side of the story, they were already against him. I watched the show some time ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy but I do remember John never wanting to be Steve Rogers, he just wanted wanted to be a hero for America. John was responsible for messing up Falcon's chat with that girl (forgot her name) however, Sam & Bucky weren't giving him any respect at all. Yes, they barely knew him but at the end the day, HE was assigned to that mission, he was captain and treating him like a child was out of line. You cannot just hijack someone's job and think they're going to be okay with it. Fortunately,facts don't care about your feelings and unfortunately for Sam, the Flag Smashers were bad people. The logic behind them didn't really make sense either and there was no excuse for their behavior. This whole thing of trying to be besties with the villain instead of getting the job done, isn't it. Besides, the scenes where he was being Captain, I think John Walker had a good personality and during different circumstances, he would gotten along well with everyone. I hate seeing characters like these being hated on while others like Wanda Maximoff, Tony Stark, Loki etc. get to walk free. To compare him to Steve was always so cruel. Imagine doing your very best but everybody hates you anyway. He had the whole world against him and he only had Lemar. Then Lemar died, and he was expected to just watch it all happen like some emotionless doll and give out smiles and hugs to everyone like all was forgiven. He had nobody. Anyway, I really enjoying watching his character, especially seeing how he persevered in all situations and I'm hoping him being US Agent will finally give him his time to shine and show the haters who he really is. Having Wyatt Russell play this awesome character was genius. John Walker is definitely one of the best characters introduced to the MCU and obviously my favourite. He truly carried this show🤍

My only issue is that he never gets a bone thrown his way till the end. He does un-captainly things but he does reasonable and right things. Even his trial feels harsh on him, but it comes right after the thing most people hate him for. Which is meant to show how alone he is and how yk, uncaptainly he is. But it just somehow made most people hate him more. He's a gray character that I feel like most people go overboard with. They either hate him or hype him.

Steve Rogers is my favorite character in marvel with Clint as a close second, and maybe comics idk I really like Batman, Nightwing, and Superman. Steve is everything I'm not, I have much more in common with John walker or tony stark but Captain America has always held a closer place in my heart. Chris Evans took a seemingly one note boyscout into a flawed and human character while retaining the morals that keeps the character true. I love bucky and Sam and wish the show hadn't started from those two to focus on the flag smasher. But more importantly I'm happy the show introduced me to John Walker. John walker is just like you or me, albeit handsomer and more well built, probably a lot more likable to if I'm being honest. He's arrogant, rude, egotistical and stubborn yet despite his flaws all he wants is to do the right thing, to be a good MAN.

It’s not a hot take. It’s easily the most common take about John. He’s not captain America, he’s US AGENT and that’s befitting.

Is it me or does Falcon and the Winter Solider just look so much better than every digitally shot MCU film because it’s actually properly color graded. I get some people like the more bland natural color lighting but to me it’s really boring. This show looks stunning with its visuals.
