This video focused generally on the history and context of why tattoos are seen negatively in Korea. Also why tattoos are regulated on TV shows. Jungkook's hand tattoo has a positive message and is subtle and can't be seen that clearly from far, so I assume they let him perform without covering it, but I guess Korean broadcasting networks or ent. companies are still not comfortable with ZOOMING in on a tattoo. I do see more and more tattoos visible on TV shows so it's getting better though! My personal wish is for Bighit to be a little more supportive towards JK or the other members' freedom of expression. Thank you for posting that. I'm not an especially observant person and artist often change their performances (different venues, new arrangements, etc... But it did catch my attention that it was J Hope, not Jungkook who did the hand sign at the end. And coming from a country (USA) where tattoos are generally no big deal, it wasn't something I immediately jumped to as a reason for the change. I laughed so hard that you included a clip of full-frontal male nudity, where the tattoo is the biggest issue with the scene. I guess every society has their taboos. For us, tattoos don't even register on the MPAA's radar, but fully naked men are a big no-no, no matter the context. They're cool with naked women (the rating changes with the situation). But if you want to show a penis, you gotta fight with the MPAA to not get it rated NC-17 (used to be called "Rated X". Aka, porn). But we don't have public nudity, like in places where communal bathing/saunas are common. There, nudity is just a thing, but here, nekkid people are automatically associated with naughty-time. On another perspective I think Bighit has to weigh in on protecting Jungkook's wellbeing from the potential backlash and negativity. Considering the amt of hate and bullying that goes on, it will be of better decision not to step into unchartered waters at this point when already they are pushing the boundaries and under the microscopic lens of many. And I believe they are already trying to push tolerance level a little by not covering the tattoos which can be done easily or getting JK to lay low and not do any acceptance speeches. Just my 2 cents worth of opinion coming from a first world Asian country yet still stuck with certain societal values and beliefs. But thanks for video!

yes.. it’s the location of the tattoo. it wasn’t a big issue with jimin’s tattoo because for the majority of the time, it cannot be seen. but jk went ahead and got it in the most obvious place.. i get what he wanted to do.. like waving and showing the ARMY word.. unfortunately not everyone can celebrate it.. so it somehow backfired.. i think the reception would have been different had it been somewhere slightly hidden like inner arm.. regardless, i think he learned that certain actions can have severe consequences as he said something about thinking twice in one of the recent interviews.. good thing their brand value wasn’t affected much.

I have a feeling that Bighit avoided the zoom in to avoid anymore issues regarding JKs tattoo. I mean that tattoo shop controversy and all the bs that came with it may have led Bighit to sorta avoid any more drama. Not that the tattoo should have caused any in the first place🙄 Also makes me curious what they did during MAMA 2014 when a whole Jimin NEVERMIND and HYYH tattoo was broadcasted(even if it was temp). In Korea, an accidental and momentary showing of a tattoo is tolerated in general, as long as it is not obscene or shocking in design. Also, I know a lot of people thinking Jimin's tattoo is cute and artistic, whereas JK's tattoo is not accepted as positively as Jimin's. For one thing, Jimin's tattoo is easily hidden most of the time unlike JK's on his hand. Second, many think JK's tattoo design is aesthetically unpleasing or plain ugly.

For me. I think its the tattoo controversy that causes JK to hide his tattoo. The investigation about video/photo leakage is still on going and the tattoo parlor/shop is riding on it for fame or maybe monetary compensation from JK or Bighit solets see whats gonna happen after Bighit solve this problem. So far two people was already taken to the police for investigation of the video/photo leakage.

A tattoo is still viewed negatively in many countries, not just Korea. But at the same time the younger generation is mainly positive towards tattoos and so it is a generation issue. More and more people want and are getting tattoos because they understand that it's a body modification, the same as piercing or dying your hair, and doesn't make you a criminal. You can have tattoos and still be a succeful and kind human being. So inevitably the shift will occur, even in Korea, and society and laws will change. It's only a matter of time. I'm very happy that someone as popular as Jk is true to himself and got tattoos. He is one of the people that is part of this change.

I know he knew people (mostly Koreans) wouldn’t like them and it would be really hard to film or promote if you’re constantly in long sleeves and gloves. thank you so much for this, I have been asking the same question and now I finally know why they didnt show jungkook's hand. i never realized it was because of his tattoos. After this I was wondering if it showed in his water performance and the tattoos were there but they zoomed out when he brought his right hand up which did indeed have the tattoos. but again thank you so much for this video, it has all great and interesting information 🤩👍

Thank you for sharing this information. I was wondering why JK’s hand was not shown on the award shows or even on Bon Voyage. Although many of us don’t agree with the censorship of the tattoos, Big Hit and broadcasting stations have to make a decision as to whether showing a tattoo on television or streamed media, is worth the risk. Having a tattoo myself and even living in this open society like the USA, there is still a lot of judgment or lack of aaceptance about having them. I work in public service and just about 2 or 3 years ago, men and women at the workplace no longer had to cover up all their tattoos. It may be unfair to JK for not being able to have it showcased to the public, but we will have to wait for the time when governments and groups change their own negative perspective about tattoos. The world is slowly changing.

I understand this is Korea's culture and that without the past there's no future but sometimes if you keep on focusing on the past you can't move forward . I know cultures are treasured in different countries and cannot be changed but with this culture I think it can be changed and if it's Changed no one will be affected by it .Seriously it's just a tattoo I don't find anything wrong unless the tattoo is offensive, I myself I don't like when people have too much tattoos on their body let's say someone having tattoos all over their face that's just too much but a little bit of tattoo is fine so long as it can be shown to the public without offending anyone

Thank you David for this very detailed explanation. Now I understand why Jimin keeps hiding his NEVERMIND tattoo and said that he doesn't have a tattoo during an interview. This means we'll never see Jungkook's bare right arm again because he's tattooed his whole right arm. Poor boys. But at the same time, I admire South Korea for being this conservative. My country has lost almost every conservative and traditional aspect. We're "globalized" now. So sad.
