For context: Canadian MPs almost never speak in public against the party line (a problem of another sort in Canadian politics--politeness gone too far), so just one MP willing to publicly call for Trudeau to resign likely means the party as a whole is close to the edge of mutiny.

Trudeau cares a lot about Quebec. Keeping Quebec loyal is the main reason he got into politics, in fact. So I could see him being uniquely bothered by this loss in a way he wasn't by the Toronto loss a few months ago. The problem is, Trudeau probably figures he's the only prime minister with any chance of keeping Quebec voters loyal. Trudeau's likely successors are all English-Canadians, and in Liberal Party lore, only French leaders can win Quebec.

Fiscal conservatism (low taxes, deregulation, decentralization, etc.) is more emphasized by Canadian conservatives than social conservatism. The Liberals need to force Trudeau out. Canadians hate politicians who overstay their welcome. Any hopes for the Liberals is to find someone from the provinces who isn't tainted by Trudeau and possibly breath fresh air into the Liberals. Maybe they could eek out enough seats to prevent the Conservatives from winning a majority. But if they keep Trudeau, the Liberals may go through what the conservatives experienced when Mulrooney left Kim Campbell in charge. It took decades for the conservatives to be relevant again.

Nobody wants the job. If you lead the Liberals to defeat, they toss you, even if you manage to save the furniture. Plus the Liberal bench is very light. Most of the Federal Cabinet Ministers have 10 years of scandals and incompetence on their records. Provincially, only Newfoundland has a Liberal government, so there are not many "stars" to be had. Carney wants to be PM, not an ex-leader four months after an election.

He really should have resigned well over a year ago, for the sake of the Liberal Party and the country. He has made himself extremely unwelcome and damaged both his legacy and the chances of the Liberals to get re-elected beyond repair, and Canada will not be much, if any, better (and possibly a lot worse) under a Conservative government, but there is just no other real option. He has overstayed his welcome. The most-important insight a politician can have is to know when their time is up. It is a rare gift, and sadly he did not have it. The electorate will make that very clear to him very soon.

Canada's recent election is another reminder to keep demanding ranked choice voting everywhere. But if you do some digging, they're there) A Haaretz article from a few months ago titled "Israel Emptied Its North. Now Officials Fear Evacuees Won't Return Home After the War" sums it up quite well: "Nearly 80,000 people living near the Lebanese border were evacuated or fled during the Gaza war; only 60 percent of them are sure they want to return, according to a survey" I would be surprised if that percentage has grown since Israelis have been emigrating in droves since Hummus launched Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 10/7

Trudeau literally claimed this morning that Canadians need to be "more engaged with politics" and that is the reason he and his party are doing so poorly after the byelection loss. He is claiming the only reason people don't like him and the Liberals is because the vast majority of Canadians who want him gone just don't know how ignorant they are about how good he and his party are for Canada. I have been watching politics for 40 year and have voted centre right and centre left in that time. I have NEVER in my lifetime seen a Canadian PM both so viscerally hated by so many and yet completely oblivious to what is headed his way - his Liberals are on track to basically be wiped out in the next election based on polling today going from minority government to fourth place (if election held today they would go from 154 seats down to 32 seats) they would be wiped out leaving the separatist Bloc Quebecois as the Official Opposition. Every major negative thing that has hit Western countries in the last few years - housing crisis, immigration, inflationary spending - Trudeau and his party have made every single one of those key issues (and corollaries like access to health care when you bring in millions of immigrants without proper preparation) so. much. worse. The infuriating part is on every ONE of those files they were warned by experts both inside and outside the government and ignored those warnings in favor of governing by optics alone - ignoring sound long term policy. The Liberals just announced a desperate policy change extending mortgage to 30 years (from 25) and allowing tax payer funded mortgage insurance to now cover 1.5 million dollar homes - which are only an average home price in Toronto and Vancouver (which the Liberals are struggling to hold onto) - thus further juicing home prices which are already some of the highest in the world. People will literally be dancing in the streets here in Canada if he resigns - that is absolutely insane to say in stodgy old Canada but its true.

@@caseclosed9342 Russia's army isn't that big either if you exclude the hundreds of thousands conscripts picking their nose back home because Putin does want to commit them because of the political implications and because he honestly doesn't have enough equipment to sustain it. Same in most countries, manpower number alone means very little. How well trained are they, how well equipped are they and most importantly, can you constantly supply them with everything a soldier needs during the full duration of a war? The supply and equipment are always the issue, you can get as many blokes with rifles, but that doesn't make a functional army.
