Hello Korean here! Lived there most of my life until I moved to the U.S. While it is nice to see this mentality from people who aren't Korean. I can't stress enough how overgeneralized this is. There are many people in Korea who don't look at all like what the media portrays. Many people are overworked working 60+ hours of work a week and still having a hard time making ends meet. When I finished high school my parents gifted me a nose, eyelid, and v-.line surgery so I would look nicer and have better opportunities at finding a job when graduating. In Korea, we have to submit our headshots with applications as well as our height and weight and many things that is never submitted here in America. I was so shocked when I started looking for work and learned that you don't do those things here. I had friends who were not so fortunate to have those surgeries gifted to them by their parents, and sadly those friends still struggle to this day in society. It's not all skincare, diet, and vitamins we also invest in plastic surgery and procedures.

@@ModernVintage31 every culture has its negative aspects. I don't think there's anything wrong with Cassandra highlighting the aspects of K-beauty that she finds positive and motivating - which was what this video was all about. I think she was just trying to share the things she loves about K-beauty so others can enjoy it. She's actually made plenty of videos about toxic beauty standards in the past. We've all been tourists somewhere at one point or another. And, when you're a tourist, you're at your most optimistic. Most tourists don't go searching for the negatives of the place or culture they're visiting. And if they do, they're missing the point of why they're visiting a new place to begin with. Same thing in Venezuela. There's this "most beautiful women in the world" obsession/title because of the beauty pageants a few women have won over 50 years or so. In reality our women also go through the knife as teenagers, there is a lot of pressure to get the perfect body and face, have "beautiful" friends... not like in South Korea, but it's going that way (It's also very much linked to prostituti0n and corruption). As someone who worked lived and traveled in East Asia, used to teach ESL, and lives in an extremely multicultural city now ... some things I've noticed that apply to many Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese women. #1 sun protection sun protection sun protection, a tan is bad. Even the old village women working in the fields wear long sleeves and big hats. Sun visors and umbrellas in the cities. And dryer skin, less tendency to acne. But also obviously compared to North American women generally, they are slimmer. And they obviously have thick shiny straight hair that grows long or holds a geometric cut well. Plus there's often culturally learned "girlish" or "ladylike" manners, grace and precision in movement. All of this is kind of the opposite of me :) but the skin care products are fantastic and the makeup tips very clever. That said, the K-pop idols have all clearly done plastic surgery, mainly eyelids, noses and jawlines I surmise. And many online influencers are filtered out of recognition. You just don't see people looking like this IRL.

As a Korean American please change the title. It’s very cringe. I think “prettier” is not fair to other race and ethnicities. I came to the States around 5/6 years old. There are “attractive” people from all over the world. Avoiding the sun is important and using sunscreen. Double cleanings and diets are important. Working out and exercising regularly. Wearing less make up are things I did as a Korean American. I rarely wear make up. My focus was on skincare and natural beauty than make up. If I did wear make up I wore concealer and bb cream (eye liner, lip gloss/lipstick. “Americans” think I am 10-15 years younger but other Asians think I am 5 years younger or my age. I’m in my early 40’s. I have puffy eyes, smile lines but decent skin overall. I do use red light neck and face mask. I also get derma treatments 1-2 a month. I do get facials 1-2 a month. Just like anything else you have to put time and effort into it. I’m taking supplements but not excessively. I drink lots of water. I don’t drink, smoke or do drugs. Alcohol and smoking ages the skin. My thing is do what’s best for your needs for your skin. To educate yourself in how to be more healthy and better skin. Each day do them as they become a habit. Don’t do something that someone else is doing. So do what works for you. #1 use sunscreen. #2 drink lots of water. #3 wear no make up or less make up. #4 eat a balanced diet. #5 get plenty of sleep! Your skin will thank you! 😊❤

As a white American who has almost entirely Korean clients, I second so much of what you say. What I want to add should not be taken to contradict any of what you are saying because your point about the different attitudes towards appearance (I particularly think about the differences over plastic surgery and using head shots as part of a job application when trying to capture the cultural differences), I want to point out that some of the differences most Americans see are *not* coming from those particular places but rather from seeing a particular subset of Korean people. If one sees Korean people in the same situations as Americans (as an American, for example, do you see them at work and in the shops? Do you see them relaxing with friends and at home?) then one can make a judgement. If someone watches K-drama and KZbin…sigh. Keep in mind that Cassandra is unusually, refreshingly honest about her skin compared to many KZbinrs. I cannot tell the difference between the skin of an average Korean person and the skin of an average American, myself. If I were basing my opinion of Americans on what I saw from influencers or from Hollywood, I would say, “Why do Americans have such great skin?” etc. Plus, it’s not even fair to say this about Korean women - this is holding an entire nation of women up to some impossible standard! What if American women were greeted by disappointed faces everywhere because we had normal skin?! My Korean clients, too, think I am 10-15 years younger than I am and say that American kids look so young; I think that is partially because they are used to seeing actors playing young people, like a 23 year old person playing a high schooler. I think this is showing that we all fall victim to stereotyping groups we only know about through the media. The women I work with mostly use American brands of skin care but they may also use Korean, Japanese, or French brands. There is a lot of Oil of Olay, a lot of random stuff from Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods - your basic bathroom setup in other words. The women I know generally don’t wear makeup around the house or with friends, and many of them don’t wear any makeup at their jobs as scientists or doctors, but if they have a meeting for their children’s school or an evening social event they will get dressed up and then their skin does look amazing. In general, I find their appearance is much like the American women in our community, or perhaps the Korean women wear a little less makeup. In 20 years of this job, I have seen enough to say that Korean women have the same skin as women in literally every other similarly situated country I personally know about. Korean women in the media do have much better skin than the average American woman. Then again, American women in the media have much better skin than the average Korean woman. There just isn’t some Korean magic - and I say this despite loving my job and the friends it has brought into my life. I am deeply appreciative for the kindness and generosity of the people with whom I work, some of whom have worked for skin care companies and given me amazing products as gifts over the years. Korean skin care is really great and my skin loves it. Appreciation of beauty products is great. Appreciation of history is great. Appreciation of culture is great. But there is a real ick in turning that into some kind of (inaccurate) beauty stereotype.

im korean. i dont think anyone should idolize beauty standards in korea. plastic surgery is out of control in korea. there's nothing wrong with anyone looking the way they do being born. we need to avoid these ridiculous artificial standards. please just focus on life experiences. not on how you look physically. we koreans are overly obsessed with physical appearances.

Went to Korea last week and the flight attendants fit that generalization the rest of the people looked normal for a few girls who over used cushion powders. Saw thick people there of all sizes. If you are getting rf microneedling stop it is depleting your fat pads.

Hey Cassandra, I have a video request. There's a local esthetician in my city who uses Epicuren Discovery products, if you can do a quick overview of the brand or a quick thought on the products, I would be so grateful. Also, I remember like 2 or 3 years ago, you said that you would do a video about the origins of clean beauty and how it was related to racism. I have been waiting for the video for a while so, please let me know if either of these videos can be made when you have the time. Thank you. Love you, Cass. 😊

They are perfectionists. Sometimes it is good, sometimes it is not, if you are taking care of yourself it might be good, but from what I understood of Korean culture, they hold people to this high standard. That's why they bully celebrities if they gained weight/lost weight, their jaw is not to beauty standards, etc. Please, don't idolize Korea, that country has negative sides too (I'm writing this as somebody, who like Korean culture), as every country.

I love Korean skincare and beauty treatments but I like to enjoy its benefits from the distance and not take in it to the extreme. I like to take care of myself and show the best version of me but not feeling the inmense pressure that Korean culture put on people.. so I take few tips here and there and that's it

Well, let's compare apples to apples...so taking a korean that is into beauty vs american that is into beauty, I feel It comes down to priority and beauty standard. Korean beauty puts priority on skincare vs American beauty seems to focus more on makeup. Korean beauty standard seems to focus more on natural youthful looks (no heavy makeup, no tanning) vs American standard is more like kim kardashian style (plump lips, heavier makeup, tan). But both are into cosmetic surgery.

I am so sorry if this comes off mean, but I am writing this because I genuinely do like your videos and watch them all the time and enjoy your content. Whatever you talk about other races or groups that you are not a part of, you tend to generalize and stereotype these groups, and in such an excessive way that is genuinely harmful to the communities that you are praising. I understand that you are educated in a lot of things, but as an esthetician myself, I know for a fact that I didn’t learn enough in school about BIPOC skin and it was considered a specialty, and that was only six years ago. I don’t know exactly what education you have had since leaving school, so I cannot speak for your education, however, based on the way you are talking about Korean people in this video, it feels like you are mystifying them in a way, making them seem better than human, and that can actually the human eyes people, and make others see them as not a person who deserves respect or privacy. Saying that Koreans all have amazing skin and diets and it’s like that for everyone in South Korea (paraphrasing), is not only setting unrealistic standards, but also false information. I know that seems like a stretch, but it is some thing that I have seen, especially with how people of other backgrounds fetishize the Asian community so much because they are viewed as almost “perfect”. I know you’ve been to Korea twice, but as also a fellow San Fran girlie, it’s like someone going to San Francisco twice as a tourist, asking random ass people on the street as well as some of the top skincare providers about the culture of San Francisco (could be San Fran skin routines or hair care or daily life or culture, whatever), and then coming back and speaking to tens of thousands of people about how this is what ALL people from San Francisco do and how they live. San Francisco is a big city full of so many people with different ways of life, and no one would be able to know what an entire city and their people are like. And that’s just a city. You are generalizing an entire country. I cannot speak for the actual Korean and Asian individuals, however, I can see that a number of butterflies who love and respect you are telling you that this is not okay and that you are generalizing. I ask that you speak with more BIPOC individuals of whatever community you are talking about before making another video about a group of people that you are not a part of.

Koreans are far from the only women with ageless skin. There's a whole continent full of people like that, despite wildly varying incomes. Yup, I'm talking about Africa. So... I suspect for fairer-skinned populations, it's as simple as healthy low sugar diets and religious use of sunscreen from a very young age.

I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT THAT! Like dark skin have more collagen and suffer less with sun exposure

Yeah, and don’t forget the plastic surgeries on that to do fair skinned Korean list! Something the vast majority of Africans can’t even think of dreaming about affording… and probably wouldn’t if they could.

Im asian but not from Korea. My decolletage is very smooth like a baby's bum. I don't shave cuz i don't have visible leg hair. I don't wear deodorant, cuz I don't sweat there. I don't look my age. I don't have 3:43 wrinkles@60. I don't wear make up. I've never had a facial, mani pedi in a salon, I do it myself. I haven't use a skincare face mask ever. Yes, I grew up using umbrella on hot sunny days. Here, in the U.S. umbrellas are only for rainy days, which is crazy. My country has produced 4 Ms Universe, 1 Ms. World, & 6 Ms International. I think it's the asian genes but the difference is beauty comes with brain in my country.😊

As a black woman living in Japan, I was just telling my husband how nice and clear their complexions are. I'm trying to clear up my acne but it's hard. I been using salicylic acid a few times a week to cleanse. It seems to help but I still have the white heads on my chin, the pus-filled ones. Not sure how to get rid of those.

Sometimes is is frustrating that doctors don't believe that proper diet can make you be healthier. And how they don't relate food with some skin problems. I have few people in my life who can't eat dairy or processed sugar because it will break them out. But they figured this themselves

Im married to a korean man, he tells me there is also a lot of plastic surgery imbedded in the culture, its basically a right of passage and even more so in the cities. The beauty standards are so high there even if you look too dark you will automatically be deemed as undesirable and untrustworthy and Koreans do sweat lol, they just have a gene that doesn't make them smell 😂

Apart from surgery and skincare, makeup plays an important role, Korean makeup tends to lean on the youthful and fresh style, its not invisible but bare there makeup type and Korean makeups unlike Western makeupits colour is less pigment and its usually neutral colours most of the time, the way you wear your makeup can made you look young or old.

I wish America had more bb creams and super light tinted moisturizers, I mean, we have them but a lot of times they’re still too heavy! I have very dry skin that’s prone to redness but I notice a light bb cream still looks more flattering than a heavy foundation even if you can still see the redness
