Sadly, Larry Fine is no longer with us, and his final days weren’t the easiest - as he had to succumb to living in a wheelchair following a harrowing stroke. But his life is one full of inspiration that all of us can learn from.
Larry Fine was born in the 'city of brotherly love', Philadelphia, on October 5, 1902. He came into show business almost by accident. As a child, he burned his arm while testing a piece of jewelry at his parent’s shop. His parents bought him a violin as they felt that practicing the instrument would help him rebuild strength in his arm.
He became an expert violin player and would later play the instrument in a few episodes of The Three Stooges. In the 1920s, he began his career as a violin player in vaudeville theaters. It was during this phase of his career that he came in contact with his future colleagues to form The Three Stooges.
Larry Fine was best known for his comic talents with The Three Stooges and appeared with them in several short and feature films. He became an icon of comedy and is remembered as a legendary American entertainer to this day.
Sadly, in his later years, he suffered from a stroke and ended up living in a wheelchair during the final years of his life.
But how did Larry Fine get started? What were his struggles and his journey in becoming one of the famed Stooges?
There’s a lot to learn from Larry Fine’s life and career and it’s a great message for anyone looking to pursue their dreams. His legacy is one that shouldn’t be forgotten and should be introduced to a new generation.

I love how everyone likes to talk about the “tragic final years” of a star. I worked at the Motion Picture Country Hospital where Larry Fine lived after his stroke. I was there in the mid-70s. He was a happy, funny man with a good life until the day he died. And Moe Howard visited him regularly.

My friend wrote a fan letter to Larry in the late 60s. He requested an autograph, and Larry mailed him a signed photograph, as well as one from Moe. They corresponded until shortly before Larry’s death. In the final letter, Larry wrote that it would likely be the last time he’d be able to write back, as his health was failing, and he wished my friend well.

@@billp4 This reminds me of a similar situation when I was caring for an elderly gentleman with dementia. There was this huge jug that had once contained cranberry juice. It still had the label on it, but it was now being used to store diesel fuel, which is also red like cranberry juice. I had awful fears that this guy would mistake it as cranberry juice and drink it one day. I informed his family, and they took off the original cranberry juice label and marked the outside with the word, "diesel" in large black letters. Even with that, I was concerned because this guy did some very unsafe things, like immersing an electric mixer in dishwater while it was still plugged into the outlet. I immediately unplugged it and told his family. Unlabeled containers holding dangerous substances can have tragic results. I also heard of a woman who had put cleaning fluid into an empty Coke bottle and was cleaning with it at the same time she was sipping real Coca Cola from an identical bottle. She got distracted while talking on the phone and picked up the bottle of cleaning fluid and drank it accidentally, poisoning herself. She later died in the hospital. A good lesson to be learned from these experiences, and from Larry' childhood story -- ALWAYS clearly label containers.

@@hyzercreek Yes, but when someone has dementia as this guy did, he may not have spit it out. He may have swallowed it, thinking it was cranberry juice. He did many unsafe and peculiar things, due to his dementia, including putting knives in his truck and later accusing me of having stolen them. Fortunately, his family knew of his situation, and didn't believe him. ALWAYS make sure that containers are clearly labeled, and even then, keep them out of the reach of children or others who might harm themselves because they simply don't know any better. Because I was caring for this man, I felt responsible for looking after his well being. Hence, I informed his family about the things he did that were unsafe, so they could be proactive in helping prevent a tragedy. They appreciated it.

I used to know one of Larry's granddaughters. Worked a whole summer on an archaeological dig with her. She looked a lot like him in the face! I did ask her a few questions after I found out who she was, but tried not to bug her about it too much. To her, he was just Grandpa. Interestingly, she said she couldn't stand watching the Stooges shorts, especially when she was young, because it bothered her too much watching her Grandpa get slapped around. She also remembered Moe Howard coming to visit when she was young; all the grandkids were afraid of him, thinking he'd be the mean sourpuss he was in the shorts, but he was actually a very nice man in real life.

In the 1960s on a Sunday night , Ed Sullivan announced that on the next Sunday the 3 Stooges would be on as part of the Ed Sullivan Show. When I saw that I ran to my mother in the kitchen and told her about it and to make sure that we all see in on time. In Old NYC, in Old America during the Mad Men era. By the way Moe, Curly and Shemp were born and raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, part of the 5 boroughs of NYC. One of my fondest memories from what I consider the ,ast decade for a normal childhood in America unlike today.

*To condense Larry's life this way does little credit to him as an 'authentic creator' of the 'The Three Stooges' as opposed to the 'Healy' era when they 'worked for him as his 'Stooges'* _____________ *The 3 of them together were magic!* *'Shemp' suffered from phobias over traveling...he didn't like being 'on the road' and even rail travel upset him to the point of needing tranquilizers to stay calm and the idea of moving to Hollywood caused him no end of sleepless nights to the point of Moe telling him "Joe will have to take your place because if we aren't there the minute they want us, we'll be on the 'bread-line' with everyone else and I'm not gonna' let that happen!"* *Once 'Curley Joe' came-in full-time...all the rest became history that wasn't equaled until the 'Beatle' era in terms of popularity* _____________ *If you get a chance, watch 'Have Rocket Will Travel" and "The 3 -Stooges Meet Hercules" from the late '50's early '60's era...they're 'hokey' by today's standards, but still funny!*

I saw both Larry Fine & Moe Howard, plus 'new' Stooge, Curly Joe DeRita, in person, when they were making a personal appearance for their new movie, "Around the World in a Daze" in 1963 when I was 16! (One of their best full length movies). I was surprised how short they were, but still basically looked the same as the "old days"! Great memories! R.I.P. Larry et al!

In 1959, I was fortunate enough to see The Three Stooges in person. Their shorts started running on WPIX, Channel 11 in New York City and Moe, Larry and Joe DeRita made a personal appearance at a local movie theater. I was 8 years old and I still remember it. Now I’m a volunteer at the Motion Picture and Television Retirement Home where Larry died.

Grandpa would be laughing so hard he had tears coming down his face. I even have a poster of the three of them in their golfing gear that says "Golf with your friends" I also was able to visit his resting place at Forest Lawn where he is buried with his wife and son. You neglected to mention that Soup to Nuts also included Mo Howard. This was the first film appearance of the Three Stooges, then part of Ted Healy's act, though the credits listed all three separately. Similarly the Stooges were all together in Nertsery Rhymes, although the Stooges now included Curley replacing Shemp, and they were billed as Howard, Fine, and Howard.

God bless all the stooges and their family's It's just sad that the movie studios didn't appreciate all the hard work and acting that you men put into your skits All of you will be loved by every child who has the opportunity to see your shows that's for sure and your family's deserve to collect residuals off of the shows that you stooges put out.. forever

I've been a fan of The Three Stooges for over 50 years. Larry Fine was not only hilarious he was a virtuoso violinist._ I like all stooges but my favorite Stooge is Shemp. I know everybody chooses Curly and I like him too but Shemp had his own unique sort of humor. I used to drive my parents crazy doing that "be-be-be-be-be" thing he used to do.

I met Larry as well as Moe and Curly Joe in Bakersfield in 1964. They were there to promote the Tree Stooges shorts and a grand opening of a store, that how I met them. My Mom was driving down Chester Ave. and there they were, we kids started yelling, stop, stop there are the Three Stooges, she pulled over and we bailout even before the car came to a complete stop. There was no one else there but my sister an brother and of course me, we had a great time talking to them, Larry laughed just like he did on screen and was so friendly as was Moe. I had to ask Moe a question, my Paternal Grandmother told me she had hit Curly and made him cry and Moe said it was true which was shocking and made me feel ashamed Moe pulled out a large black notebook stuffed with papers and wanted to know what her name was, so I told him and he asked where did she live and I told him that too, I did get worried though him and Larry were talking together and seemed very excited. Well Mel Gibson put that in his movie about the Stooges but I can't remember if I told him that story or not, it's been along time ago. I still love those guys, they were real good people and I still love them to this day.
