This definitely deepened my appreciation of Bill Evans’ genius. I was thinking while you were playing it, “man i wonder what Chopin would think if he ever heard something like this” and then you mentioned Chopin around 15 min. I think you could live 200 years and still keep figuring out new stuff about piano harmony.

Thank you again, Kent. I have listened to this several times this afternoon. I am a huge Bill Evans fan and listened to all his music and most videos where I could find him live. A genius, he definitely was. He moved me like no other. Watching his left hand was his genius of his soul and artistry. Complex concepts and luscious. With the deepest appreciation and admiration for your wisdom of his work.

Great analysis. I was just listening to the tune this morning, and thought " let's see if there is a transcription of it" and voila. It's so interesting to take it apart like this, as you Siad, to understand it better, to better appreciate his genius and innovation in what his chord choices were and how he used them compositionally. Thanks so much.

Personally, I think it is one of Bill Evans' best pieces, especially the live version of the album, ''at town hall'', I have not been able to find a transcription of this recording, I really appreciate your explanation and video, your channel is very nice many greetings. Thank you ¡¡

Thanks Kent, love the video. Please continue this series!! Once again this is way past my skill level but I'm rewatching it now to try to really thoroughly understand what you're talking about. I get the part with the genius little Fmin7b5 and the 13 flair the most. I found Portrait in Jazz at 13 years old on Spotify. His take of Blue in Green is still one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Autumn Leaves is my other favorite, so melancholy. I didn't ever give the rest of the album as much attention so this really made me go back and do a deep dive of the album. By the way, I'm doing exercises from your Appendix #1 😊 7 chords (maj, min, b7, dim) caround page 30(?) with RH then LH. Thank you for inspiring me to get serious about piano again! -Ben D.

The best teachers are still students, we never stop learning. Another out of the box chord is the Maj7b5. I’ve been experimenting with it & it’s pretty versatile. I would enjoy to see you thoughts & some contexts that Bill might’ve used it in!

Yes ...actually I used the Maj7#5 in my most recent post...check it out. But Bill used the b5 as well...thanks for the comment.

possibly the best jazz piano channel on youtube , try not to leave us too soon 👑👑 i have a question though, why do you often 'flick' notes in your left hand? oftentimes with fingers 234. 2:25 for example. thanks for everything u do

Fascinating! It's partially an affectation and a purposeful intention to leave space, but my fingers are responding to want to play notes....and mentally I'm holding back to allow for space in the left hand, which make the notes in the right hand more important.
