The truth is PHP isn't super exciting and it's been around so long we think it is obsolete. But there are so many places looking for PHP/wordpress, especially in the smaller companies. Ironically, when I started I was actually trying to avoid it... I ended up working a company that does mostly wordpress/php website development. lol There is no escaping it!

I work for one of the biggest companies in the food sector in the world. They use agile but have data capture systems in PHP 7, it's in fact growing, people just like buzz languages, look at ruby on rails to see how the 'buzz' languages turn out. It definitely isn't just for "small companies" or wordpress.

My two cents. To anyone out there looking to get in to the industry, there are tons of entry level jobs for php / wordpress - like the guy said. Once you get used to web development switching languages and frameworks isn't that hard (or really even that exciting), so don't feel like the stack you choose to learn now will determine what you'll be doing for the next five or ten years or something. When starting out I'd look more at what kind of a job you'd like to get now. If you're 100% committed to a startup culture Ruby and Node are good, a lot of the website / marketing shops love php / wordpress, etc..

I would say that writing backend js is a completely different skill than frontend js. Going to PHP instead of learning Node isn't as much of a leap as going frontend to backend. Do what you want, but realize that depending on where you live, a Node job might be harder to find. I learned a lot about Node (and prefer it) but now I'm back to PHP because there are 0 entry level Node jobs where I live.

EndlessEtudes You’re completely right, many people don’t realise it is a big jump going from JavaScript to node.js, you’re actually better going from JavaScript to php as the syntax is more consistent.

I live in Orlando, Fl currently (miss San Diego :() and they are hiring PHP developers for $90-100k a year with less than 2 years experience. That's definitely motivation for me to learn PHP and MySQL right now. I was doing FreeCodeCamp these past 2 days and completed 100 challenges in less than 2 days but I was not really learning how to build pretty ass websites that could get me hired. But it indirectly reframed my mindset and has made me realize that being a web developer is my diehard passion. The past few months all I do is read articles about coding. I bought colt steele's course but I was lost when it came to CSS selectors so that's why I stopped coding for a few mths. When I get the money I'm buying your courses just wait on it lol >.

X Vid, sounds like a useful web res...wait a minute! There's definitely penetration testing going on but no MySql or Javascript in sight! Joe, massive fan of your videos and enjoy the hangout vibe you've got going on. Just one question, how do you approach / breakdown a project using Javascript/PHP? I understand the fundamentals of both languages, however, I get lost while trying to figure out the problem. I watched a vid just yesterday of Traversy Media (great channel) building a bookmark application using only Js (and Bootstrap too but that's easy) and was just blown away that he knew how to break the problem down and build it up. Is there a structure or step by step process to go by? Thanks maynnnnnn!

I’ve spent almost 11 months learning so far. I got the hang of html, css, and js and jquery are starting to get clearer. I still have things on that end to learn like ajax and api. Should I wait until I’m better with that before moving to php? I had planned on getting into react, but if php will get me a foot in the door, I just want to know where I should place my bookmark in the front end side before moving to the backend.

Start learning php right away and once you know the basics learn about the MVC pattern and start learning laravel framework afterwards, do 2 to 3 projects with laravel and start applying for jobs, don't wait any longer and learn about ajax along the way while you are making the laravel projects. I've been in your place less than one month ago and now I have already landed my first job as a laravel developer :)

As a newbie in development, been working front ending a while, just started learning some course about node, and problem with node, you are not allowed to learn how things work, because we are using packages, for example, you use package passport for login/register and stuff, and behind scene, you have no idea how that is built.. And all courses use packages, so my opinion php is better for learning stuff, mastering, and then when you master it, you can learn node easily.. because you are forced in php you learn from 0 and understand it fully how things work.. :D Maybe i am wrong, who knows..

What happened to your stream about PHP, I was in the middle of it then it died on me when I refreshed the page to write this comment below that video: Do you mean we should learn PHP after learning JavaScript? As far as I understand, this is how it goes right: HTML>CSS/Sass>Git/GitHub>Bootstrap>Javascript>jQuery>PHP ? I just know basic HTML, CSS, and Git at the moment.
@keithcarrillo8238

BtWebDeveloper you can learn php before you learn js or the other way around you'll hear fans of one telling you to learn one first because of such and such. But if you want a bigger focus on front end or backend then you should have a-first-language-focus between the two. They don't depend on eachother like knowing css before Sass & bootstrap.

I see, thank you so much for letting me know! I started taking the "New Media Web Design" program in Niagara College 2 months ago and the program is mainly centered around front-end web development just as I like it. I am in my first semester and in one of my classes, they are teaching us Javascript so I might as well learn JavaScript for a while until I start looking into PHP. I am looking to get a job in Toronto after I graduate in 2 years, and as Joe said, when I look at the jobs in indeed PHP jobs seems to nearly double nodeJS jobs but I will enter the scene as a Junior Front-end Web Developer and I'll see where PHP and nodeJS will be at in 2 years. I am not sure knowing one or the other will be a necessity to get the junior job.

JS is the fastest, realtime collaborations such as google doc, firebase, dropbox paper. And when it comes to frontend tech, Angular, Vue, React are quite popular now. So, PHP becomes only for endpoint server, but python, ruby, rails could do the same job. Btw, facebook is not only PHP.
@slapmyfunkybass
@slapmyfunkybass 7 жыл бұрын
frez stylz Facebook is 100% php for the backend, you shouldn’t be using php for frontend, that should be left to JavaScript. You said JS, I think you mean node.js
@luzaw4957

Facebook is not 100% written in PHP. facebook.com/note.php?id=9445547199&index=9&note_id=14218138919 www.quora.com/What-programming-languages-are-used-at-Facebook-Where-is-each-one-used Yea, I shouldn't use PHP for frontend. That's why I said *PHP* becomes only for endpoint. I didn't mention only Node JS. Node JS itself doesn't do much unless it is *NPM* . And I just commonly say JS because a lot of JS frameworks out there. This is my opinion why I choose Javascript (high-level programing Lol). Because I am building a cross platform web apps, desktop apps, mobile apps. And *JS* can do it at *ONCE* !. PHP? Nah,, I don't think so, and I use many API services that's why I don't have to code in PHP to build my own API. Check out at Google Trend, PHP is going down year by year. trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%205-y&q=PHP,%2Fm%2F02p97,Python It seems I went so serious. No offense. :D PHP vs Javascript is like Potato vs Banana.

Okay, I thought you were just starting out so asked the question, I was trying to simplify it for you. I think FB largely uses Hack which they created, kinda a dialect of php but obviously a lot of other languages are now interwoven in its makeup. It was originally written in php though.
@BrandonClapp
@BrandonClapp 6 жыл бұрын
JS is not the fastest. C# on ASP.NET Core is currently faster by about 4 fold and there are other language/server configurations that are faster in general. Speed is also relative to the task at hand. JS is single threaded so if you're doing heavy computation you'll need to fork the process (different than multi-threading) to do the computation so that your web server doesn't block and deny new requests. Unless you're trying to scale beyond a few thousand users at any given time, performance is heavily overrated for most small projects. However, if you're looking to scale, you will need to scale your architecture horizontally by adding additional servers rather than vertically scaling a single server by adding more resources to it. Any language can scale with the right architecture. In the use case of Facebook, they don't have a single web server hosting everything. They have load balancers that, on request, route traffic to an appropriate web server based on load. There are also other tools that are taken advantage of to scale such as in-memory caching datasets (memcachd, redis), using queues (rabbitmq, zeromq) for out of process jobs, ..etc. tl;dr - Scaling is more involved than just picking a programming language. For realtime apps, almost every language now has a websocket library available to it, be it socket.io, signalr, action cable, django channels, ..etc. Every language has pros and cons. For example, anything npm package related seems to break after coming back to the project 6 months later. I don't prefer PHP to some other languages, but as a web development company there's no denying that PHP dominates marketshare for small businesses, has the most developers available for the cheapest price, and is a mature, tried and true solution for many people. If you're just a hobbiest and don't care about those things, then perhaps another language is better for you.
