In this Driving Lesson with Phoebe, she learns about Meeting Traffic which is where you could meet oncoming traffic in a narrow road or where there is a obstruction either side of the road which is preventing you from passing as normal. This lesson will cover how to identify such situations and how to deal with them.

I was just on a private lesson with my Dad today and i felt the need to thank 3 drivers. Two for giving me way and one for reversing because we turned on a bend simultaneously and there were parked cars to my left so I couldn't see. I feel it's just polite as a new driver so that's why I do it.

You can just raise four fingers of your right hand and keep your hand on the wheel. It is important not to thank drivers who you have forced to stop where you have failed to give way.

@keith6400 except why would I have forced them to give me way when that's what they are meant to do? I gave way to drivers when I see a sign telling me to 👍

@@wrx9482 My response was saying generally that it is possible to acknowledge courtesy from other drivers without taking your hand off the steering wheel. Some people on this thread do not seem to realise this. Secondly, I think you misunderstand the scenario which I was talking about. If there are vehicles on the left and restricted space, you should give way but often you move out and round them because there are no oncoming vehicles visible. This is obviously correct because the later appearance of oncoming traffic is outside your control. The situation I was thinking about was when you are driving along, there are two cars parked on the left and you can see an oncoming car. You know you cannot get out and round the obstruction without causing the oncoming vehicle to brake but you nevertheless continue and watch them brake to a stop. You then thank them for stopping with a cheery wave.

You can always nod your head to thank others if necessary. Sometimes taking hand of the wheel can be tricky the signal can be misleading especially if you're still negotiating the Gap or hazard, always good to be courteous!

Meeting situations think can you or they get to a safe area. If they have set off and are also committed. Say there side has a safe area to pull into and your side doesn't . If you reach there safe area first , stop to allow them to get to the safe area and pull in

Some clarifying pointers about this video I'd like to make for Phoebe (based off of Pin's advice): - In meeting situations, it's first come, first serve. If either you or the oncoming car has already initiated to come through, the other person gives way and vice versa. If you have an obstruction (e.g. parked cars) on your side, you typically give way and vice versa for oncoming traffic. Allow yourself plenty of space to move through narrow roads and to move off after giving way to oncoming traffic and keep your speed steady. Always look out for hazards, plan ahead and keep a safe distance from parked cars. (min. 1 meter from parked cars from either side allows you to do up to the speed limit, whilst keeping possible hazards in mind) and (1/2 meter or less from obstruction or parked cars from either side requires you to lower your speed to 15mph or less, depending on the situation) - When stopping on the stop line, keeping the car stopped and secure with just the footbrake is more than enough, as the handbrake is moreso confirmation for test day examiner that you've stopped the car; if the stop line is on a hill gradient, applying the handbrake to do a hill start is absolutely recommended.

I can see Pheobe is struggling with the stopping distance rather than walking to a situation in preperation to stop or go further back forcing herself to react at last second, common thing a learner struggles with in the begining, unless spacial awareness is an issue.

My instructor had a moderate go at me when i was thanking other drivers as a competent learner on the build up to my test. I found it ridiculous then and ridiculous now as a qualified driver. Its impolite and unnecessary to refuse the good will of other people and if you seriously cant take a couple finger off the wheel to say ‘thank you’ then shouldnt be on the roads in my opinion

Yes that’s true because it is not necessary for the learner driver to thank people that give way to you! That’s why most instructors don’t recommend thank those drivers who give way to the learner driver! Most experienced drivers using stop hand gesture - ✋or flash their high beam or both of them(a hybrid of those two) to acknowledge to give way to oncoming traffic from narrow roads. Most Learner Drivers doesn’t often use that technique(that experienced driver use) Passed Learner Drivers do that technique after they passed their driving test. So yeah
