Death is pretty common for superheroes. If one of them bites it, they’ll likely be back on store shelves before you know it. With no real consequences, it’s hard to get invested nowadays. But some stories don’t pull their punches - when someone goes down, they stay down, and it’s up to the rest of the cast to pick up the pieces.
I much prefer to see the impact a character’s death has on others, rather than bringing them back for shock and awe. Someone taking their place and struggling to live up to their example. People who remember their actions and are forever changed by them. The fading of a name into legend. A tangible absence can be much stronger in a story than a hollow presence.
I know a lot of you loved Rivals, so I wanted to put out another video on comic book/anime tropes. Hope you enjoy! And if you don’t, well, it’s only 11 minutes. Not too much time wasted.

Japan's equivalent of the MCU, and the symbol of Superman is a superhero and franchise known as "Kamen Rider", and its SO much about legacy, that some "Kamen Riders" have little to no connection to one another, but recieve the title of Kamen Rider anyways to homenage the first vigilante; Kamen Rider. And just like the MCU and DC each has a different lore - one can be a paranormal being while the other is man-made, and another is a alien. Yet, they're all A Kamen Rider.

Glad someone here brought up Kamen Rider. I absolutely adore the franchise, and while we don't usually see the original that often (unless it's some big event) all the Riders feel like Riders. They have a special legacy to uphold, being the heroes of Japan and beyond. The name Kamen Rider brings with it its own honor. It's a promise to fight for the people and defeat anyone who dares to threaten the Earth, even if it costs their life. That is what it means to be a Kamen Rider.

I always will prefer legacy, and continue the legacy of a character before revive the character and keep that going FOREVER, Korra to me was an excellent take on legacy and despite she wasn't as good as Aang I think that was the point, no one can replace Aang, but neither no one can replace Korra they both are their own person, that's the magic of taking the mantle, I also like stories that take place YEARS of difference so each character live in it´s own time line, I think this is why Characters like Gohan, Wally and many ended failing at some point, as at any time the MAIN here could return and because the main hero is way more popular as fans always have the constant reminded of how good the main guy was and he is sometimes even keep CLOSE (Goku for example) and that comparison not help the new legacy hero, while in the case of Korra Aang was long gone, and the Avatar system prevents one avatar and the next interact with each other physically the only way they can interact is spiritually, and probably the best decision now in hindsight the creators took was severed the connection of Korra with her former lives so there was no way to keep comparing Aang directly with Korra.

Death in comics became meaningless, really everything in comics became meaningless, the moment Marvel decided to bring Jean Grey back and say she was never even in the Dark Phoenix Saga. After that, it became safe to kill off characters left and right for diminishing shock value since the precedent of bringing them back was set, and every short-sighted editor was free to kill or destroy any character he disliked. Resurrection then became the only way to fix bad stories, even as it continued to cheapen everything. In an ideal world, only deaths that are handled horribly would be undone, while deaths that become classic stories would stick. Unfortunately, it's only the worst-written deaths that have even a chance of lasting.
@gamesaurs1542
@gamesaurs1542 Ай бұрын
This can also be added on with old, more obscured characters being only brought back as canon fodder to be killed and stay dead forever. Both Marvel and DC have done this with characters that most have completely forgotten about. Thus they die and leave no legacy behind. They too died for simple shock value.
@connyslayer4661
@connyslayer4661 25 күн бұрын
Good criticism and I definitely agree about the fact that many deaths can be lazy and used for shock value. Thing is Death should be meaningful and affect the story properly despite any resurrection or other happenings. Its a writing issue and intention issue more than anything.

Ha Code Geass is a pretty good example of this. It has both legacy and... resurrection. But in my opinion handles it somewhat well as it still ends up sort of the same way with the world not really knowing about him being back. And that being a whole different timeline completely.

This is personally why i would love to see a batman, superman and wonder woman new trinity like every peice of ground work is already set for them to let go of the mantle like have nightwing be his own version of batman, have superboy (Conner specifically the YJ ver.) finally get his full power set and become the new superman and have wonder woman i really don't know if she has a apprentice if i remember correctly there was wonder girl (i think that's her name and that she appeared in YJ) be the new wonder woman and finally have them take take care of damian, john and lizzie, the ground workis all set for a awesome passing of the torch but sadly i think it will never happen as DC is afraid of change especially with those 3
@johnthai6188
@johnthai6188 Ай бұрын
i feel like when dc tries to move on, they can't because the fans want the old characters again. for example the time when nightwing became batman for a time, was really cool and made sense that dick would be next in line to take the mantel, but fans didn't want to read about dick grayson being batman; they cared about bruce being batman and only bruce can be batman. in their eyes, what makes batman interesting, is the psychology of bruce wayne - not the next person wearing the mask. same thing can be said for any old hero that dc haven't retired yet.

There are some legacy characters that make sense that are written well such as Wally West becoming The Flash after Crisis on Infinite Earths, Terry McGinnis becoming Batman, Miguel O’Hara being Spider-Man in 2099 but then there are some where there wasn’t really much thought put into it, the character didn’t earn it, or the character needs to have another title for validation that they matter like Riri Williams becoming Ironheart, or Falcon becoming Captain America

As much as I love Geoff Johns' run on the Green Lantern, I believe bringing back Hal Jordan was a huge mistake, especially since it comes at the cost of his successor Kyle, who was still around, but was just there. Although Kyle's transformation to a White Lantern did alleviate this somewhat, there still wasn't much done with the character and he was later relegated back to being just another Green Lantern. Funny thing is, I grew up with Wally in JL TAS and didn't even realize it wasn't Barry. I know his name is said a couple of times, at least... and there's scenes like Luthor after swapping bodies pulling off his mask and being like, "Who the Hell is this?" and showing his RED hair, so he's clearly not Barry... and yet, I guess I somehow forgot all of that. Because Barry was The Flash. Somehow, I knew several superhero identities despite basically never touching a comic (besides Spider-Man and Simpsons which isn't exactly relevant) and the one I learned for Flash was Barry. And that's what stuck. For YEARS. Honestly, I think it was around the time of CW Flash premiering that I learned there was another Flash (not Kid Flash) considered to basically just be THE Flash. Unlike basically everyone else, where there's almost exclusively 1 main version, except for things like Green Lantern which is an ENTIRE Corps so it can be MANY, especially since they're basically universal police (or at least galactic)... so I basically always knew Hal and John... but yeah. Weird how Flash kinda has 2 main versions.

honestly a way they could bring a character back repeatedly that would make sense is to keep doing it in some other form-first they are normal to some extent; then they get resurrected by some sort of experiment or whatever, becoming incredibly overpowered; then they are resurrected the normal way; but from that point outward they could then end up existing as a spirit once they die; then as a fragment of their spirit, possibly having to piece themselves back by searching for other fragments in some form or another; after which they are back as a spirit that may or may not be able to interact with the physical world and maybe have a physical form; then the spirit could be torn into multiple entities for extended periods of times when seemingly defeated, like each part representing a certain idea, or a certain emotion-you get the point/picture that way it's always something new; not just repeating the same thing over and over again with no flavor or originality

Any type of lazy legacies or resurrections will obviously fail if it's Not done properly to express itself. There can also be legacies and resurrections side by side done properly. It takes great writing and management of the characters so each of them shines well. Perfect examples of these for me are Super sentai, Batman Beyond, Kamen Rider, Superman legacy and resurrections, Ultraman and Transformers even. Some aspects of Dragonball Super are amazing despite its flaws as well. The new gen characters get to shine too The reason I say this because they continue legacy of the main important characters with other great characters but also bring back classic characters to work with them. Not a bunch of stupid poorly written arcs but a few episodes here and there which either give us a glimpse of what's coming or just how a past events effect a character. This is why I refuse to consider episodes in Western cartoons that aren't super focused on the main plot as filler, not only because that term is hardly used for anything other than anime but because such episodes in Western cartoons have a lot more meaning and usefulness than most(but not all) anime filler.

This can apply to video game franchises that never got a "proper finish," due to having a sudden absence out of nowhere *cough* F-Zero (mainly the 3D titles) *cough* Right now, lots of indie successors are on the rise (by that I mean stuff that's actually accurate in feel to the original games and not just general antigravity racing games). Their legacies can be felt in how the developers of those titles build on a foundation, and just improve in areas F-Zero never got a chance to. Heck, this goes for others that only get rereleases and no new installments or other titles that have never gotten an opportunity to succeed (such as Chibi-Robo). Itt's not that they're to replace what was lost, but enhance the legacy of what came before. To be what their predecessors never got a chance to be in life.

I say confirm popular characters' deaths be in an alternate continuity and are non-canon to the main continuity. This way, you will have both the original character you can use as much as you want and a legacy character you can use in any crossover opportunity.

i feel like the big 2 tries to move on, but can't because the fans want the old characters again. for example the time when nightwing became batman for a time, was really cool and made sense that dick would be next in line to take the mantel, but fans didn't want to read about dick grayson being batman; they cared about bruce being batman and only bruce can be batman. in their eyes, what makes batman interesting, is the psychology of bruce wayne - not the next person wearing the mask. same thing can be said for spider-man or any old hero that dc/marvel haven't retired yet.

So if resurrections are a no-go, then how about reincarnations, like Soma Cruz from Castlevania? Or alternate universes/timelines?
@ravsucks
@ravsucks Ай бұрын
@@matthewmccoyd2578 I don’t think resurrections are entirely a no-go, I just think they’re overused and don’t have proper build up most of the time. Goku’s first resurrection, for example - perfectly justified. He spent the whole year preparing for it. His second time? Bit more shoehorned, so he could replace Gohan. As for reincarnations, I think it’s a cool twist. Alternate universes, as with the RDJ example, can cheapen the death and absence of a character. But like I said, it’s all about context. The Flash did alternate universe versions well (for a time…) with Harrison Wells, by making them very distinct from each other.

What is so frustrating about superhero comics bringing back dead characters is that even if the characters died 30 years ago, it does not stop either Marvel or DC from making comics about them that took place while they were alive. They technically don't even need to take place within an alternate universe. We do not need to have these characters brought back to life in order to continue having stories about them.

I think resurrection can work in the cases of Red Hood and other such characters but it should effect them. Dying shouldn't be shrugged off. Perhaps they comeback to life but now they want to retire or they are now tramatized. Seeing them work through that trauma or find peace in retirement should be their next arc. For Spider-Man specifically, I think much of the ideal is seeing Peter grow with Spider-Man. Seeing how he deals with life as both a hero and a family man, teacher, mentor, etc. Before retiring him for good for characters like Miles Morales. Overall though, fully agree. Seeing the next generation is always more interesting than a rehash of the old.

I think Legcy works more often than not since it leaves more room for character growth in most cases and in some cases lets you focus on other parts of the world thanks to a different MC. However I don't think Resurrection doesn't work at all, I think it works in the case of characters who are more fantastical than not and are more like this person is the messiah type deal. Plus I also think it depends on when the character is revived and how big of a deal their death is.

I think a good way to present dr doom, would be for him to be a failed clone of Tony Stark, from a secret preject created by shield after the events of the first avengers movie. It'd be called "Project resurrection" created to make superhuman soldiers in case the heroes decided to go rouge. Victor who was designed to mirror Tony's looks, intelligence, and personality was not complete. He looks like him and he has his intelligence, but he lacks any human emotion. Seeking an identity of his own, he escaped and traveled the world seeking to learn more cultures and science and shit. He pent most of his time in eastern Europe where he learned ancient sorcery. After he mastered it, the new gen of avengers became a thing but he doesnt view them as proper heroes. His view is that the world needs a prime leader, a true hero who would rid the world of evil. They fight and he loses(duh), but then he's aware of project resurrection and plans to use clones for his sake. I think this can justify them bringing back RDJ and this can even setup the clone saga for spiderman.
