The soviet Union went through different phases with it's attitude to LGBT people. Lenin decriminalised it all the way back in 1917 but then Stalin persecuted them very harshly and the laws only began to relax in the Glasnost era. The older people here are probably not surprised by this change in the law because the Russian state has been going back and forth on this issue for all their life.

What are "traditional values" in Russia? There was a tradition (literally thousands) of gay neonazis in Moscow despite Putin now declaring both categories to only exist in other countries. -> Vice interview, 2013: "In the group I'm in, there are about 1,500 to 1,700 other permanent members in Moscow or nearby areas. Then there are other communities of gay nationalists scattered all over Moscow-there's a GASH group in each area."

@froodtube
@froodtube 5 ай бұрын
It is a time honored strategy. If you create a problem that only you can fix, you are the savior. Putin has to convince Russians he is their savior of traditional values. The evil West is trying to invade Russia, steal all their resources (which pretty much only Putin and 600 Russians currently own, so how would that even be robbing the Russian people?.. its already stolen from them 😂), and of course the West is going to immediately force all Russians to have mandatory sex change operations. Only Putin can save the Russian people from this fate! He will create a Russia where everyone can wear traditional dress, have 8 babies, and dance Russian folk dances all day! Paradise! Trump does the same with "MAGA" Create a fictitious undefined state so people can envision their own ideal society in their own head, and then associate that with Trump. Only Trump can lead us to paradise. Funny part is if you actually question Trump or a Trump supporter, "What year in the past is the primary year you are trying to bring America back to. By your definition, when was America Great?" They can't actually identify any year, and if they do and you point out the ills at that time they just get mad and start spewing slogans.

Have you sensed any difference in social climate after this recent "LGBT is an extremist organization" thing?
@bethy_cuter
@bethy_cuter 4 ай бұрын
@@AliceP. oh that's a tough one So one the one hand, not really, as the situation was already pretty bad. there were already some laws about the 'lgbt propaganda' first amongst under-aged people, then amongst everybody else 😅 basically it didn't happen all at once, it took quite a while to make people believe that gays are the enemy and the problem. So I don't think that this specific law changed the way people view lgbt people. We were viewed as something bad and disgusting or as a threat and that remains the same (important: not all of the people think that. young people usually don't care from my experience, so as some adults). Surprisingly the opinions about this specific law seem to be not very supportive. Even if someone is against lgbt in general they'll be like 'yeah, I don't want to see any of this, why can't they do it all behind the closed doors in their bedroom! but to arrest them for who they are? they are mentally sick, so let them be but let them be quiet' - that's the main narrative that i've heard from the people who don't support lgbt However this law changes a couple of things 1. it basically banned all of the people as coming out as a part of the community is now a crime lols. In the law that I saw it's stated that the use of the gendered words (as in actor-actress, but has been a matter of the linguistic debates in Russian language recently) is also a sign of this deviant behaviour that lgbt community share. What I mean is that this law extremely ridiculous, doesn't represent the truth (who would be surprised) and stands in a row with other repressive laws. It banned the people, and that's another huge reminder that it's dangerous to talk and to speak up. And people get more scared, and some get quieter to stay safe. 2. most important change so for the russian propaganda gays and their sexuality is not a real issue, we get it. they need an enemy - they created one. Lgbt is considered to be a tool of the evil West, that is going to destroy our traditional values, the culture and the society, that aims to degenerate all of the people who don't support lgbt, and it is a group of freaks that claim to be better and want more privileges than 'normal' people have. This traditional values narrative is a whole programme, and I'm scared to think where they are going to with all of this. If you scroll the news, you'll see other similar news (not so similar at first glance, but I believe they're connected) - discussions on banning the abortions and some first steps made in this direction - reviewing the cartoons, songs, TV shows and films (no lgbt topic there) and checking whether they contain any damaging information that can negatively influence children and teach them wrong values - special lessons at school where they discuss values. checking the study materials and so on - loudly cancelling all of the pop stars that attended 'the naked party' (it was some party where they had the 'naked dresscode' as in bra and a transparent shirt or something. not a big deal if you ask me, but it was soo criticised by the state because of these stars' kinda collapsed moral system or whatever, because they don't respect the values of our country and because 'how can they have this Sodom and Gomorrah when our guys are dying at the frontline protecting our country') - arresting some guy that also decided to perform almost naked on the stage at his concert for the same reasons - developing the russian 'the sims' game with the traditional values - accusations and apologies from different famous and not people for absolutely ridiculous stuff - some potentially motivational stuff about giving birth to more children as our demographic situation is not good enough - the discussion, that Russian military guys saw a gender-neutral bathrooms in some Ukrainian school and unironic phrases like 'now we know what we fight for'. it actually became a meme within the opposition 😅 Long story short, it can be seen that the state programme is to show how unique our Russian culture and values are, how important it is to save our morals as they are and not let the evil western people and idk, i suppose Ukrainians ruin it, or whatever they mean. If we look on the issue from this side, then the lgbt law that you asked me about is a massive stone in all of this prison that they've been building, and it did heat up the climate in the society sorry for a long-read!

@bethy_cuter oh, don't apologise for the long answer! I'm interested and it's pretty hard for people outside of Russia to understand the real dimension of anything because we can only get what comes out in english and I know that there's an effort from the government to censor information. I follow a russian youtuber who's openly gay and has been living in Georgia (perhaps you know her? Her channel is "Natasha's adventures") and she's pretty much the only person I see talking about these issues in english. I suppose there aren't many more because even living abroad you could get in trouble or not be able to safely return if needed :/ I did wonder why I don't see any artists/celebrities from Russia speaking out, considering that status does protect people a lot of the time. But your story about the naked party thing and celebrities getting cancelled/persecuted might have enlightened it for me. Thanks!

In my teens and early twenties I was more left oriented, however I grew up in a rural Conservative area, I voted Conservative for forty years. Now in my more senior years I see things differently and am more left leaning, I suspect some of the elderly Russians feel the same. Are we so different that we can't get along?

In the UK there is at least some attempt to try and understand the extent of violence and discrimination against LGBT people. And what it usually shows is that the language and attitudes of the State and prominent politicians matter a lot. In a dysfunctional basket case like the Muscovite Empire there will never be any attempt, even any pretence of an attempt, to survey such realities. So we can only really imagine what it's like being gay or lesbian, or suspected of being so, in a provincial, run-down, post-Soviet shithole. These Moscow attitudes are better than they could have been. No-one will ever know the realities in that country. Probably most LGBT people across the KGB Orwellian empire keep it hidden as much as possible, even to themselves.

Yes but on the other hand telling children men can get pregnant and having biological men smacking women around on the playing field is total rubbish

It seems like the attitudes in Russia are similar to the UK in the 70s/80s. Most people are aware of LGBT and generally don't care about it. unless religious or 'traditional'. But the government don't want this sort of thinking to take away from their 'traditional family values', which it really doesn't, they just want people to keep with the old ways, do what they are told and don't question the government. Add in the anti-gay religious factor and you end up with the Russian version of Clause 28, and make it illegal to 'promote homosexuality'

I support a ban on LGBT propoganda, but a ban on someones natural orientation is far stretched. Someone shouldn't be gay because they were influenced by their peers or propoganda, yet they should know from birth. Same thing with transgenderism; unless your brain is specifically sexed different from your body, no one should be trans and get serious operations done because of they have been influenced. However, measuring who has dysphoria is a difficult process.

I don't think you understand how it works. No one becomes gay because they are influenced by something or someone. Either you're gay or you're not. Hence, "gay propaganda" doesn't exist. Even in the most progressive countries it's harder to live your life if you are gay.

@clandestinefreedom8114 your peers don't convert you into being gay it's more of a preference, someone who is actually gay,which I'm not could explain that more precisely.
