Join us as we chat with Dr. Tim Hovanec from Dr. Tim's Aquatics about why going low nutrients is totally wrong. We'll also share what to do if your nutrients are low, including turning down your blue channel, putting your protein skimmer on a timer, as well as using Dr. Tim's Waste-Away to get bacteria back into your tank.

This explains exactly why I don’t use skimmers or don’t feel the need to. Thank you for sharing!

I now run my skimmer 12 hours a day to keep my water clear and remove excess crap, but also give my corals 12 hours where they don’t have to compete and that’s when I feed them. I feel like this is best of both worlds.

Funny the timing of this - I've been manually turning off my skimmer more often each day for various reasons (like KH/Ca/Mg dosing, plankton dosing or even after feedings when the bubble column likes to collapse slightly due to the water viscosity changing...). I'm still only 3 mos into running my 360 gallon system (which was partially migrated from my previous 75G (both water and rock) and have run into the cyano. I already have some Chemiclean on hand and am planning on dosing tonight. I'll definitely plan on adding a program to my Apex to shut down the skimmer at night though for a time...especially making sense that my Chaeto's fuge light turns on during that reverse lighting cycle.

100% agree with this, I have had more issues with ULNS than anything else... And check out Doctor Tim rocking the lovely gold yacht-master from selling bacteria, now that's the American dream.

I have something that looks like cyano but chemiclean wont get rid of! Dosnt look anything like dinos. Its red and not stringy like dinos, just a red mat that gets on everything! I have tried this stuff as well, so far only think that works is blowing off daily and stirring up sand bed. Always comes back though when I quit the daily chore!

So does cyano also use blue light or only Dino? My tank 5 months old. Nitrates only 2 ( I keep feeding more) but cyano taking over.

After several months of profuse Chaeto growth and harvesting, my system is now overtaken by cyano. Anyone know ways to introduce nutrients into the system? In my freshwater I can use compost tea. Would that help my macroalgae?

Maybe take out the chaeto entirely? I was thinking about running a fuge, but with a rollermat and skimmer, it seems like overkill. I'm probably just gonna put rubble and bio bricks in the fuge section for growing pods.

turn the skimmer on, water change, change your socks more often, feed less, you can add carbon for a while as well

I had my nitrates at about .05 and phosphate at .08 . I used to add bacteria micro 7 when I added 4 gallons of new water. Bacteria brought my levels to zero. So I stop adding Bactria and levels went up. I’m 🤷‍♂️

I have always added mb7 directly to take. I know directions say add to water first but i guess i never saw the purpose since none of the other bacterias say to do so! It hasnt helped so maybe i should try adding to water instead b4 adding to tank!

2 hours off? Really?? So for 22 hours a day your skimming bacteria out of the water column... and then you give them 2 hours to recover while being eaten by coral?
