I think the trend towards stealth wealth is a factor in this too. Luxury brands have a reputation for slapping on their labels on regular garments. You got a standardised garment which are used for several brands. You might as well just buy something cheap then. Luckily, because garments that visually scream that they're from that and that brand will never not be tacky. Anyway, Dior got caught in using cheap labor on their hand bags. Pretty sure all of the luxury brands use that, they just haven't been caught yet. So the garments are worth a lot less, and that's why their worth plummets right after the sale.

Hi Christopher! The fragrance part of the design house typically is the only part of the fashion that a majority of people can afford. The majority of people cannot afford a Chanel garment, but they can afford a Chanel fragrance. same as true with Christian Dior. I will not buy their clothing, but tomorrow I am taking delivery of Ambre Nuit Esprit.

Honestly once people start making more money/silent recessions end people are gonna go right back to buying luxury en masse. All this “luxury is dying” talk is the result of people trying to rationalize to themselves why it’s fine they can’t afford these goods anymore. I say this because the entry level marketed for luxury (makeup, fragrance, little goods) is doing quite well and you would think if everyone was truly done with luxury they would move on in all aspects. I don’t think declining quality will deter as many people since once the new crowd is able to afford and buy that’s the only frame of reference they have for quality

Try to copy Hermes is where the decline started. Instead of trying to convert Hermes shoppers they should stick to their own lanes. Chanel’s whole claim to fame is their fragrances so they should’ve stuck to enriching that.

I think we’ve started to see them slowly reduce the amounts of raw ingredients in the fragrances, opting for synthetic materials. Hopefully with time, we will still see the use of raw ingredients in scents.
