Ma Long just lost a battle not a war and he still has so much to give. He will get back stronger and I believe it’s good for the sport that he and FZD also gave opportunity to LS and WC to see if they can handle the pressure in the big stages! He has just won the World Cup with FZD so it’s OK! We love him and he is an inspiration to all of us!!!! He has to give so much more!!! He will be back and ROAR 🐯 again!!!!

I agree with you. Losing 1 or 2 games is not the end of public career. Of course, the opponent and his fans jumped for joy, like the Lord has come. No doubt age catches with Ma Long, like Timo Boll. They do not need to use Ma Long as the target of strong opponents. They should turn to Wang Chuqin.

Guys, let's be realistic. Ma is getting older every day. He'll never be as good as he was some years ago.

@@user-tt7qh7us4j Maybe you are right! But experience is very important and sometimes Chinese dont show their full potential on purpose before the Olympics or the World games! Remember they know everybody is watching, so its better to lose a match before the Olympics. Ma can handle the pressure in the big stages like no other and if its better for him at this stage to be considered not on top form! He will pick up his level if he plays Olympics a month before. We will wait and see, maybe you are right!

I don’t like the age excuse. There were at least 5 players in the main draw who are older than ma long (timo, chuang, filus, kamal, habesohn). Dima and aruna are the same age. Ma long is a great player, but he doesn’t have longevity- which I think is an important aspect of the GOAT debate. I mean, persson came in 4th at the 2008 Olympics at the age of 42. Ma long is NOT that old

Notice the two games Ma Long won, he won in large margin. The games he lost were the closest ones except the last one where he was suddenly shut down giving up many unforced errors. So, the loss was largely attributed to his energy level and age. His best chance of winning this match was the forth game. When he uncharacteristically lost the game with two casual errors at the end, he was physically and mentally beat down that lead to the collapse of the last game. The way he lost this match, coupled with the similar way he lost to Korea's Lee, shows though technically he may still possesses some advantages over most his non-Chinese opponents, his age and energy level are not able to sustain the highest level of play when the match go the distance. Thus, I believe there is less chance he will be rolling back as he's not getting any younger. As fans, we should accept the era of dragon has passed. Still, he is by far the GOAT by any standard and measurement.

Ma Long is one of the finest players , ever. But his time has come and gone. Does he leave the sport, or does he continue for a few years losing to players lower, and lower in the rankings. I think he has a few more years, but not many. He is probably one of the best players of all time. Win or lose, I love to see him play.

Ma Long should make more fast long serves to Francisca's backhand. I think he should have won if he increased the ratio of long serves. Francisca is not good in stepping aside to attack fast long serves to his backhand. His backhand loop to return these long serves were not high quality and Ma Long could start the forehand rally. Anyway hope Ma Long has the chance to play against Francisca again.

I watched Franziska play both Simon Gauzy and Ma Long in person during Singapore Smash 2024 , Franziska's plays were top class and he is really on form , I wasn't surprised at all to see him beat Ma long after seeing how he won Simon Gauzy. His backhand is stable fast consistent and powerful

The wingspan of Francisca makes him able to do backhands that have a lot of flexibility (placement and power) ... kinda like another player that Ma Long has had troubles with, Mattias Falck.

No need to rush to write Ma Long off. He is still top of chinese team. He is 35 so if he want to put more time in he needs to win but in the same time why not to retire. There is not much more he needs to accomplish. Leave at the top is always best way to go. Now he could play with his son more and enjoy life. Of couse there are some politics in Chinese tt leadership so we will see. I wouldnot be surprised if they decide who wins and when.

Ma Long is old and slower. Year to year older and slower. Sad but true.

I think the issue with Ma Long's service was simply lack of variation. PF is a big man who won't move as much. Ma Long should have varied his length and spin more. I still think China's bigger problem is with the form of FZD and not Ma Long. I think there is enough talent in Lin Shindong and a few others to actually challenge both Ma Long and FZD. Either way, I think they should push with FZD. He has become very predictable and that x factor / power is no longer as effective as it used to be before.

He already had a high chance not to be selected.... Wang Chuqin & Fan Zhendong are already just about locked into the 2 Singles spots I'd reckon ⁉️

Sadly yes, it is a crime that they don’t allow the defending champion to play in Olympics, I am from India and I think India should give its Singles spot to Ma Long so we can all watch him play in Paris😆

Ma long lost because he's getting older! Thos is not a slight and just natural progression. At this level, the top players are only "top players" because they are more consistent, not because they have a BETTER forehand or backhand or whatever. At this level, age matters and it matters a LOT! Ma long will always be a formidable opponent, until the day he draws his last breath. The fact he is still so competitive at his age, in this sport, is a wonder in itself! He is a legend and will always be so, but Time waits for no-one!

He's getting old. He is listed as 35 years old but a secret is that all Chinese players fake their ages by 2-3 years. So he is probably 37-38 at the moment.

He played very well, look at the game we'll is not what you are saying made him to loose the game. That day was not his that is all. And it will not stop him from going to Paris. What about fan, he lost gallantly, but no one is saying any thing.

Correct. I think Chinese team, especially Ma Long, has failed to follow the recent playing levels and styles of European players. Ma Long was surprised by PF's play. It seems that he was unaware of PF's current backhand ability. Ma's strategy was a complete failure in this match.

@@patrickng8974Yeah, even if dimitrij ovtcharov lose or win against him. The chinese team should have been 5x stronger to train the whole team defeating european players. I don't get why Ma Long still lost twice against this guy.

Ma Long is the GOAT. And its the right time for him to retire honourably. There are more faster and better player than him, so doesnt make sense to continue ahead.
