Is it though? Chelsea have a lot of depth but not in the deeper midfield areas. Before Christmas Chelseas form was very reliant on a box midfield of Enzo and Palmer in front of Lavia and Caicedo. Since Lavia got injured they struggled a lot and Caicedo has been gassed a bit as well. They really need some rotation in that area of the pitch.

No way Mainoo is being sold if us fans have anything to say (we might not!?). You can buy him on FIFA like he would have said himself. However, Garnacho - who I 2 years ago would have sworn would be the next big player at United - is surely a player I would sincerely consider selling to get money in for new players. In the ideal world United would sell Rashford instead for £30-40m but I don't think anyone would spend anything for Rashford at the moment unless United almost give him away for free to get rid of his huge salary. So United need to sell somebody else and Garnacho could be the solution together with Casemiro if it's true Ronaldo and his club want him now? The truth is Garnacho doesn't fit in Amorim's system so even though we will surely regret it later if he becomes the worldbeater most think he will be the sale of Garnacho is probably the best solution at the moment.

Look at Juventus, the other team to recoup over 1B, think that is 1/2 the secret. Getting players on a free and then selling. Re Chelsea and the Clearlake model, the successes have been Hutchinson free/sold for 20+, moreira free/sold for 2 (to themselves!?!) and Gabriel Angelo bought for 15 sold to Saudi for 23. The good thing is all young, still improving, manageable wages for the next club. Dortmund Red bull have been doing this for ages. The majority of the £1B Chelsea have recouped has all been Cobham (young/free/low wages, improving quality) starting at 33m for Hall, Tomori 30+, 40+ Tammy, Gallagher and Maatsen, £64+ for Mount, then it’s all the 10-20’s RLC, Guehi, Livramento, Ampadu, CHO, Gilmour, Lamptey, Palasic etc. Finished articles (high fee/high wages) Lukaku, Sterling, Kepa have been albatrosses. When you look at the 80-100+m buys, there aren’t very many that have worked out. PSG’s Mbappe and Neymar didn’t get big ears, Dembélé and Courtinho at Barca, Grealish, Lukaku, Antony, Slabhead, Arsenal’s Pepe…… Seems to be - buy for under £50m, under the age of 24, keep the ones that work out, move on the ones that don’t for break even. (Either minus the year or two amortisation or market inflates) We will see with Casadei, Carney and KDH, what the losses will be, but it’s hard to buy a footballer with 2 legs for much less than £20m these days, and 5m lost here and there, will pale in comparison to the increase in someone like Palmer. Even Sancho seems to be worth more than what he will actually cost in the summer and his value could rise even more by then.

Mainoo isn't going go to Chelsea or any other club. He does, realistically, most fit the new system better than any of the current academy players in the first team. I do think there is a real argument that McTominay would actually fit this system like a glove too, but he off enjoying Napoli. The future of football is going to be young and dynamic. Like, I can picture every club in the premier league having 5-6 academy kids under aged 22 in every matchday squad. The 100m pound transfer will still obviously exist. But I firmly believe we are going to see more kids staying where they are for longer periods as club look to subsidize their squad depth with cheap/controlled assets all while understanding that the kids need gametime to be put in the shop window for a possible sale.

Man United have been so poorly managed under the stewardship of the Glazers that much of what Ineos are doing is necessary pain to try and fix the gross overspending on players, many of whom have been so poor that they lose us a lot of money. I appreciate that but also see a lot of bad moves from Ineos in the cost-cutting department (at least in terms of the PR). Two things that don't look good are the Dan Ashworth debacle (after a lengthy and public chase to then fire him less than 6 months later makes it look like due diligence wasn't carried out properly) and now flirting with the idea of selling Mainoo and Garnacho (who they publicly stated were untouchable at the end of last season). I understand the predicament from both sides. Its players like Antony and Hojland, even Mason Mount and perhaps latterly Zirkzee that have caused all of this. If I go back further in time we'd be here all day. Such massive transfer fees and no sell on value at all. No one would match what we paid for the players mentioned. So out go the academy products, even if they make the team better. For me, only Mainoo fits that category though, if we sold Garnacho I doubt I'd lose any sleep.
