OH WOW! My husband and I were just arguing over my Starbucks addiction. My coffee and breakfast there every morning is $11.00 a day, about $3,600 a year. It is ridiculous!!!! I viewed as my one pleasure to start the day, but it is not good and I don't feel good knowing that that good be a trip that I would remember forever. Please pray for me as I am truly addicted physically and mentally. I am really anxious in the morning and I feel calm after I get my Starbucks. Crazy I know but it is the truth. My mind is soooooo dependent it on the experience and the caffeine. I know it sounds silly, but after 3 years of doing this that is $10,000+!!!!!! and I drive a 2004 car with 190,000 miles and wonder why I don't have enough for adown payment!!!!!!!! This video is perfect timing to try and change. Thank you.🥰

Agree. It is about mindset. Brewing your own coffee… cooking your own chow mien, baking the birthday cake for the hubby rather than picking it up at the shop, putting together your own Christmas wreath from the garden twigs and cones, fixing your own plumbing as far as possible… all of these, time permitting, adds to an appreciation of PROCESS, of MAKING a things rather than just consuming them. The coffee smells so much nicer when you’ve brewed it yourself, and the aroma fills the house with loving care.

Yes, the mindset and I thought too- awareness- we need the awareness of what's going on, what's really at stake here, competing for our attention, time, and money. Then we can begin to think about and make changes!!! Hats off to you for all you are doing, and enjoying the process! So many of us, and at times, rush through to get too much done, then miss the life that was right in front of us all along! Thanks for sharing! Some years ago I made a promise to myself, not to buy coffee anymore, if I don’t carry a reusable cup with me (I was coming more from the environmental perspective, trying to cut unnecessary garbage from my life) So making coffee at home has become a dearly loved ritual I look forward to every single day. AND it opens up room for growing friendships. When a girlfriend asks me if I want to meet her at a coffee shop and I suggest to here “why don’t you come over to my place instead?” Having some home made coffee and baked goods brings a lot deeper conversation than “hanging” at some coffee shop. :)

Several years ago I started brewing at home, but used coffee creamers that were pretty sweet. About a year ago, at the advice of my sister, I started using oat milk in my coffee and haven't gone back to creamers. For me it's a health and money issue. As soon as I switched to oat milk I dropped 8 pounds in a month. I feel better using oat milk, and even when friends want to go out for coffee now I'd rather do something else and just have my regular morning brew.

Another thing about the whole buying coffee/startbucks thing is that people say they are treating themselves, but if it’s something you are doing everyday (or nearly so) then it’s not really a treat, it’s just a daily happening. If you are only going out for coffee once a month or less then it really is something special and a treat. Then I sit down and enjoy. It is so relaxing and a great way to start my day. I might even have a second cup. It takes about that amount of time to get into my car so I can drive to the coffee place so I can stand or sit in line to order and then wait for my coffee to be ready. When you drink black coffee it is often safer to brew it at home. My home town, Melbourne in Australia is renowned for its coffee but sometimes the cafes buy a coffee that I don't like as much or the barista does not clean the machine often enough and the coffee tastes bitter or too strong,. We grind our beans a few at a time an the smell is amazing. Then we brew in in an Italian stove top pot and mindfully wait for it to be ready. Since we bought a portable electric induction hot plate the process has sped up quite a bit, but it was never even as long as waiting for the barista to make it and the wait staff to bring it to you. I do like to go out for a coffee from time to time because this is the way some of my friends like to spend time with me. My bushwalking group and cycling group usually stop for a coffee as well. I don't spend money on other forms of entertainment very often and I buy coffee at these times because catching up with these people over a coffee is high on my list of things that I value. When I do buy a coffee (or anything else for that matter) I make sure to write it down and add it all up at the end of the month so that I am conscious of how much I'm spending and on what. That way, when cutbacks need to be made, we can make decisions based on data and our values. Thank you Joshua.

WOW - Joshua - so good as always - thank you - yes, the attitude towards money as with many other assets is vital - the "R" words are mounting up - reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose, upcycle, refuse, reinvent, rethink, repair, refurbish, rot - it's critical thinking all over the place. My grandmother never wasted anything - the best example was her washing machine - the tub portion of the machine was hand shaped using a hammer to finish the rim at the top. She was a widow for 43 years and needed every cent to survive.

For the past 20 years we've been purchasing locally roasted beans from the locally owned cafe around the corner. They buy direct from the farmers in South America. We make our own coffee because 1. It tastes just the way we like it, every time. 2. The ritual of grinding the beans & brewing our espresso is now synonymous with mornings 3. There's nothing like a home redolent with the aroma of fresh ground coffee beans early in the morning before facing the day. SO cozy! 4. Saves us money and saves the environment from more trash.

Since then, he has been making his cup of coffee at home everyday. He said the cost of one cup of home-made coffee is 2 dollars while one from Starbucks costs $6. Although money saved for 10 year amounts to $15k, I totally agree with you that the essence is really not about the $4 saved. It’s about taking every dollar seriously (doesn’t equal to being stingy) and mindful about own spending and lifestyle. And even more importantly I find him really enjoy making his own coffee and being able to choose coffee beans he wanna try out. Other expensive habits are: eating out often, buying small inexpensive stuffs mindlessly, buying drinks instead of bringing water. I love that you said “choosing simplicity over luxury”. Living on such philosophy, my husband and I are able to accumulate asset and enjoy a low stress lifestyle.

I like it. We generally make our coffee and tea at home. But once a week we go out to coffee together. We don’t eat out in restaurants or get takeout food. So our once a week coffee date is a total bargain. And a coffee these days is at minimum four dollars here in California and more like six if you get a latte. That adds up quick.

Joshua, thank you! There will always be some who have a different point of view and don't agree, but many of us following you do want to obtain a simplified, loving, healthy good life. I thank you for this post, you brought up some good points to think about that actually came to my mind later!

If you live alone and/or are lonely the coziness warmth and friendliness at the local cafe can be a lifesaver

But in that case, you are buying so much more than the coffee. I think this video is more about the mindless, routine purchases we make. Having a coffee in a cafe for companionship, or to enjoy sitting in a cosy space or to look out at a beautiful view is not mindless, but a deliberate choice. I have some really good memories from times spent in cafes, but those times have been intentional, not just 'I can't be bothered to make coffee at home so I'll get a takeout one'.

@@pippas5808 this is great point. For many, many people it is 💯 a mindless habit. I, too, go out to Starbucks more than I probably should but it’s not mindless. I’m a mom of two (5 and 7) and I also work from home. So for me, when I get my tea from a coffee shop, it’s very much about leaving the house and it may end up being the only thing I do for myself all day - or even the act of the person who’s making it- it might be the only thing that anyone does for me (to take care of me) all day. It’s not mindless and, for me, if I don’t take the time to go out and get myself my tea after dropping my kids at school, I will get right to work. I won’t take the time at home because my mind is already thinking about my job. I would make my tea and breakfast and sit right down at my desk. Then the drive there and back again allows me to relax a bit in either the quiet or by listening to something that I enjoy without the pressure of turning on my computer.

I don't drink coffee, but I do love Diet Coke. 😂 I have recently set a goal to stop drinking it because I don't need the caffiene or artificial sweetener, but especially because of that $2 a day! It does add! 365x2 makes a difference!

Great message thank you ~ I actually do both, enjoy both. When I make coffee at home I sit in my favourite chair and just 'enjoy the moment' and the coffee tastes great ~ especially with a little cinnamon on top! When I have coffee out, its usually meeting up with someone else ~ and I enjoy that moment also, the coffee, the company, the conversation. Both ways bring me immense pleasure, mindfulness and gratitude. ☕☕

I use to spend way too much on going out for coffee whether it was at Starbucks or other coffee shop outings. When I lived in New York City way back in the 90's and early 200'0's that'w when it all started for me - going out for coffee. Although I had a fairly well income coming in , it was doable and I never gave it a second thought. All my travels I use to stop here and there and buy a coffee to go, I don't even know the amount of money I have spend probably in the last 20 years just buying coffee. I suppose I was at a different life stage than, I was way younger and probably got caught up in all the societal game of " must have that Starbucks coffee" LOL! I am age 58 now, retired, my whole life is completely different now, no more commuting to work and stopping for that coffee on the way to work or the constant going for coffee several times a day while at work. I do make my coffee at home now , first and foremost it's the start to my day! That morning coffee time is my time , quiet and peaceful and just reflecting. I rarely have afternoon coffee but when I do , it's at home, I set up my Mr. Coffee coffee maker and get that coffee brewing, than just sit in my living room and look outside my balcony door at the world, I tell you , the mindset and quiet time of that small coffee time break is not trivial , it is calming, soothing , peaceful, solitude time , it is pure bliss! And , yes, I save so much each year on going out for coffee , not that I don't go out to the occasional coffee shop outing, I still do but very rare, at this point it's more like a "treat to myself " than anything else. So I suppose now I am at another different life stage , funny how life works out, right?! But I love my life as it is now , I wouldn't change it (well not any time soon) change is always good and I embrace change! But coffee for me is like a love - it's a must have but having it at home is a luxury! Nothing like having coffee in the comfort of my own home! un café au lait s'il vous plaît!!!! Another great video that I resonate with and I had watched it back when it was originally posted! I love it!

I agree with this practice. We have encouraged making food and beverages ourselves as a way of avoiding over-priced items and also the marketing that comes with a trip to the coffee shop or the mall. I enjoy the ritual of boiling the kettle and letting my tea steep; often, I try to do a five minute task while my tea is steeping which helps keep the kitchen in good shape throughout the day. For socializing with others, I aim to avoid being out and invite people over. These practices do make our lives more simple. There is less rushing to be on time when meeting someone, and I feel very grateful for who I am meeting and what I have in my house and in my life. Thanks for a great video; another good one as always.

And when I buy coffee out I have to get either oat or almond milk bc I am lactose intolerant adding more to the price tag. When we do buy coffee out it is now an experience/treat and we try to find a locally owned coffee shop and try the specialty of the season. Each coffee shop has its own vibe. Because we do this infrequently it makes it very special. And speaking of special I bought a frother at Target for under $10 to froth my heated lactose free milk before adding my coffee.

We are coming up on the end of the year and I have not stopped once to bring coffee to work or anywhere else actually. I used to stop in the morning on the way to work, on the way to a grandchild,s ball game, or just if I had a 15-20 minute ride somewhere. I decided at the beginning of the year I wasn’t going to do it anymore, and I kept my promise to myself. I am so extremely proud to the commitment I made to this. Not to mention, I have saved a ton of money, and it definitely shows in my bank account. Making my coffee at home is such an ingrained habit now that I never think of stopping, I urge everyone to give it a go.

Both my husband and I used to get two coffees a day, and then grab a pastry also, we decided to take this advice to heart. We found a Nespresso vertuo for $16 dollars at the thriftshop, we now get amazing coffee at home and end up spending less without sacrificing taste and quality 😊

I honestly prefer making my own coffee at home, taste better, I have more control over quality ingredients and the level of sweetness also. Every now and then I’ll support a local coffee shop and do some reading or journaling. Just a little self time occasion.

Thank you! I get up earlier than the rest of the family every morning and guess what I do: I make myself a coffee in peace and quiet and drink it comfortably on the sofa before the day starts. It gives me so much, no takeaway coffee could replace it. And what many people might find funny: I make coffee the old-fashioned way with a hand filter. No other coffee tastes as good to me and making it is like a ritual that calms me down. Just the sound of the coffee running into the pot and the smell in the apartment.... I wouldn't want to use and hear a machine like that. And, of course, I save a lot of money. What luck: the nicer experience is much cheaper. Greetings from the heart of Germany

I make coffee (soy latte) at home every day, generally 2x3 times a day. My parents gave me a basic espresso machine 10+ years ago. I had thought about buying one myself, but had been intimidated by the choices and didn't do it. This one thing saves me well over $300 a month (realistically closer to $500, as my drink is $7 canadian at starbucks) ! In one month it's a lot, but over a decade it's an enormous amount of money. And making it home is so much better in most ways. I love to visit with a friend at a coffee shop, but otherwise make it at home. I do think folks underestimate the impact of the cost of daily habits for money, health etc (I CERTAINLY did)- a can of soda/pop, coffee, cigarettes - lunch out, or whatever else is done every day becomes such a routine that you might not even enjoy it that much/get that much satisfaction from it. Each of us can chose to consider this (or not) and for me it's proved to be how I saved for a downpayment for a house. Cutting back on coffees out (with food of course b/c it's there!) and lunches out. I would bring my lunch, and go out on fridays and super enjoyed it. It felt like a celebration at the end of the week. You do you of course! But i've found studying my daily hoices and the value I got from them super helpful.

I buy my coffee in a 3lbs organic bag from Costco for $18 and I brew coffee daily from home. It takes me roughly 2.5 months to get through that 3 pounder bag which equates to $86.40. Using your example, I'm saving over $913 a year. Now that might not be enough to buy a house, but using that same principle I also mass prep my meals and am able to save more for the real the things I want like going on a vacation, buying a new car without the needs of credit cards---i still use 'em for the points but pay it back immediately.

Joshua ❤. I wasn’t prepared for how deeply this video would resonate with me. I’m in line at Dunkin when this video popped up which made me laugh! You mentioned the words self discipline and impulsive and that is me- I have a lot of work to do. I am a coffee LOVER and so I do spend way too much money on coffee every day. But Besides the financial part you gave me so much more to think about and this is why I have been a subscriber and I am so grateful for your channel. Thank you.🙏🙏

Two years ago I sold a craft machine that I rarely used and treated myself to a coffee machine. My little indulgence. My husband, not previously a coffee drinker, now shares time with me to enjoy a coffee. It tastes better than a bought one. The company recyles the pods and support the coffee growers. I now have to work on my husband to learn how to use the machine 😂 A win win in my book. Thank you Joshua for putting the little things into perspective. 😘
