Why Making Apple iPhones in America Is So Hard | WSJ

As Apple tries to escape tariffs and the trade war, it is moving production out of China-but not to the U.S. Here’s how the tech giant has become so reliant on a global supply chain.
Correction: This video incorrectly states that Apple no longer assembles the 2013 Mac Pro in Austin, Texas. The 2013 version is still assembled in Austin, while Apple plans to assemble the 2019 Mac Pro in China.

@@aryan991000 that is after automation of the supply chain first... all the components, but still have to deal with abundance and cost of raw materials.... in a nutshell, any company that wants to succeed building in U.S. must be vertically integrated. they need to invest and own all parts of the supply chain, from material procurement to fabrication to final assembly, and need to be expert in everything they touch. huge scale and lots of investment.... downfall is if their products tank or have a down year, struggle ensures. Another option is for government to subsidize creation of automated vertical supply chain as form conglomerate subcontract manufacturers here in the states. in turn, they can provide services to multiple u.s. companies and diversifies the risk when a company or product tanks. risk will be trade secret shared when it's not tightly controlled in-house.

I worked for Apple (and other companies) in the early 2000’s in Elk Grove, California and made PowerMac’s, this was after the colored CRT iMac’s use to be made there until the iMac LCD that was made in China. It’s a shame those plants were shut down, after they started dropping people I went to work at AppleCare in the next building. I enjoyed making PowerMac’s more, really fun work and the days went by fast ‘cause I was busy, I was a failure analysis engineer on the production line, the products I helped make were the G4 Cube (I still have mine in the box) the Quicksilver PowerMac G4, the PowerMac G5, the Xserve... and I think that’s it. I was disabled in a car accident coming home from work at Apple one day and haven’t worked since, this was before the iPhone and x86 based mac’s. Such a shame that’s all gone, there were some dedicated people at Apple that loved their jobs there, me included.... I miss those days......

Give me a break people. Even when you consider all that, apple still puts a bigger margin of over 75% on top of that (way more than the competitors), just because they are known as an 'deluxe item' and have fanboys who buy it anyway. The same concept with starbucks. The price is not justified by quality alone, its part of the marketing: its about showing that you made it, you are able to buy the priciest brand. A very american marketing concept, in other countries the USP is just quality alone. (Not saying apple products are bad, but saying they're not way overpriced is delusional)

In the early part of Apple's ascent with the Iphone, they had a fitment issue with the glass (Iphone 3 perhaps, not sure). Foxconn called in 1000 employees (they stay in dorms next to the plant) overnight to replace the glass screen. Several hundred thousand phones, tea, a biscuit and 14 hours straight through. You'll never, ever get a US workforce to mobilize in such a way. Will not happen unless it's the Marine Corps.

@sloppynyuszi

ALIENdrifter66 actually an iPhone costs around $200-300 to make. Which if you pay $1000 sounds a lot, but that doesn’t include shipping, and storing these things, taxes, wholesale price, marketing and that huge building and the 1000s of staff Apple has in house, R&D. And product is not actually the main income, they make a lot more money on services and licensing, if you buy anything legit with a lightning cable, they pay Apple a fee. You’ll see that with all companies. Xiaomi and Huawei are banking on other parts of their company for income, their handset division especially Xiaomi the margins are quite small. I think companies like Sony and Microsoft usually lose money per unit of their device sold, as they just want people to buy games and subscribe to their services.
@ALIENdrifter66
@ALIENdrifter66 4 жыл бұрын
@@sloppynyuszi If you believe it costs that then Ok for you but it doesn't. One thing is adding up all the components to make 1 phone, that may add to 200 or 300, but when you take into account how manufacturing works and how many they phones they make the end result is much lower. If they didn't charge much more than what their products cost they would be the biggest company out there.

So maybe the taxes are working? Used to be cheap, yeah. But its not like wages never rise; you probably make more per hour than your great grandfather. It's excellent supply chain because value is created both ways: the company as a whole profits, while the worker gets money and experience (two things that can help one get better jobs, afford school, or be able to invest that money for future profits). And those inhumane working conditions in China? That's because the Chinese value hard work over all else, and that hard work will honor one's family. But of course they're still human, so that kind of life isn't always sustainable (hence high suicide rates). But who are we to judge another's culture? Is that not the leftist ideal after all, no culture is superior to the other?

Please watch the video. The biggest problem is the supply chain and unable to source everything that’s needed. So it would cost more like $1,500-$2,000 AND make it near impossible to meet demand. If they could meet the demand for Mac Pros which run in the 5 digits and thus not a top seller how could they hope to meet demands for an iPhone even if it was $2,000

Wow, $40 more to Apple's product. I mean if you're paying $999, adding 40 extra dollars shouldn't be an issue. I paid $180 for my samsung galaxy s6 on eBay, used. It functions, I can text, use apps, and make calls. If you pay more money than buying a laptop for a phone, then your parents failed you on learning how to efficiently spend your money. Many of my computer components are made from China, you don't see ASUS, ASRock, Samsung, MSI, Corsair, G.Skill, AOC, HyperX, ADATA, and EVGA complaining about Tariffs. They have competitive prices. Apple does not have any competitive prices, and they complain about Tariffs. They only care about making 100% profits, not benefits for their consumers.

After China, I might say that Apple should consider building its manufacturing plant in India. Here we've skilled workers as well. And the cost of building Iphones would be even lower than China. India is known to all by making quality products at low cost. So for both Apple & India, it will prove to be a win-win situation 👍
@thesecret6019

@Engineer Markos Mataas I am not saying that India is better than China. Instead what I am trying to say is that Apple should also invest in India which it's likely to. I hope you are better aware of the political tensions going on between China and US. And that's impacting the economy of Apple. Yesterday Trump announced that America will lift off those heavy taxes levied upon China's import to US. And China also took one step back by agreeing to buy 40-50 billion dollars worth agricultural products from US. But I am not sure for how long this situation will stay. To humble your ignorance, you should know that India is the only country to send satellite on Mars in its very first attempt and that too with low budget. It also launched 104 satellites from around the world in a single launch. So this facts are enough to show the skills of our workforce. India also has the fastest growing economy in the world. And it's expected to exceed China very soon. Relationship between India and US is good. So in case if Apple invests here it'll see a long term benefits over time.
