not expensive at all in my homeland Indonesia. this tree is so easy to grow, easy to plant, easy to propagate and does't have seasonal fruitance
@mabeSc4 сағат бұрын
Couldn't you, in theory, dry them in a similar way to raisins? Am sure that way it would keep for longer and it might still be pretty decent, right?
@zkwiwuej3 сағат бұрын
@@mabeSc Drying mangosteen like raisins wouldn't work well because the texture and moisture content of mangosteen are quite different. Mangosteen has a very high water content and a soft, juicy flesh, which makes it difficult to dry without it losing its unique flavor.
@mabeSc3 сағат бұрын
@@zkwiwuej Yes but also grapes have a very high water content and, texture-wise (the grape flesh), they are quite similar. Just wondering if anyone tried it, you never know!
@manghariz22113 сағат бұрын
@@mabeScI think it would make it not as desirable, because atleast from what I see at the first party of the video, it seems like the desire is from the taste and texture etc. Personally raisins taste nothing like grapes, so Mangosteens would probably be the same. However if we are talking about benefit, those hypothetical dried mangosteen would be incredible.

In Thailand, it can go so low as $3 for 4kg but it is a delicate fruit that is hard to transport for long distance and now the ban? no wonder why it is so expensive.

here in Davao Region in Southern Philippines just cost you 1 dollar for 2 or 2 1/2 kilo depend in place in Southern Philippines.
@nurulabidahnajihahjaini93173 сағат бұрын
@@zestiny_ it is really delicious. My favorite. The white flesh is soft, sweet and fruity. It is fragrant too. There is seeds inside which is bitter if you bite it. The flesh is a bit marshmellow-y, but juicy. Like, the outer part is marshmellow-y but the inside is like custard apple? Kind of.

Ironic you won’t find mangosteen easily available in markets of Delhi and North!
@michiganmafia4 сағат бұрын
I sure pray for the farmers sake that the bottom doesnt fall out of the market so to speak, if the popularity drops too much then price will too, and they will be wishing they had kept the trees they cut to grow Mangosteen
@iamgoodatgames50103 сағат бұрын
That’s unlikely to happen because mangosteen is a top tier fruit. It easily beats out most of the fruits in the American market .

I don't think its a good idea for a farmer to go all in on one crop if that crop has suddenly peaked due to a fashion trend, it will soon die down and the plants take a few years to grow, seems pretty risky to me.
@Unhomiee3 сағат бұрын
I think you meant "Why it's so expensive *in the US* ?" South-east Asians have been eating this fruit seasonally for decades.. They aren't terribly expensive.

Mangosteen is lightly sour taste and oddly sweet while it isn't expensive as it look for a single fruit. Plus, you better off buying Starfruit or other fruits instead which you can get more than one.

Plowing down your regular food for more of a tiktok trend is stupid. Wait 2 months and no one will want the excess because the trend is ended. On the other hand, that might crash the price a bit for those who liked it before it was cool.

Killing other fruit trees for just one temporary popular is not good!! What happens when it falls out of favour??? Balance is a better option!👍
