In retrospect, I think American Dad is the better show. It seems they took what worked for Family Guy and removed what didn’t. No excessive use of cutaway gags, new characters are introduced (that actually add to the show) and every character has some depth and can grow in an episode, like the one episode where Stan believes that helping people make them weaker until he gets a drug addiction, and by the end of the episode he admits he needed help.

Whenever I want to rewatch South Park, I have a craving to watch an episode in its entirety. Like, with "Bloody Mary," I can't just stop with Randy asking "What seems to be the officer, problem?" I need to rewatch the whole episode, because the entire episode is satisfying. With Family Guy, I can just rewatch a gag and be done. I can watch Peter start work at the Pawtucket Brewery, get drunk and naked, and then I can laugh. But I have no desire to rewatch that entire episode, because I was just compelled by their gag, not their story.

The thing is, it's not like South Park was perfect and every joke landed, but there is always something in the episode as a whole that drives it home. With Family Guy, none of the episodes is really that good as a whole except the ones that try serialization, those are good, but the rest is one joke after another unrelated joke, so if one or two of those don't land, the whole experience is a drag. Whenever you come back to an old episode of South Park it is still useful as a time capsule of whatever was happening back then, it doesn't feel dated, it's like reading an old newspaper, there is a big pile of information there and there were important details captured in the episode about what the society was doing about it at the time. On the other hand, With Family Guy's old episodes it's just a random celebrity I haven't heard of in ten years.

Family Guy is capable of making me laugh and can even highlight something true from time to time, but they’re brutally right. The show gets by on easy quick hits and even if it achieves meme status it’s still pretty thin. This is why South Park is great though, two guys that still live in touch controlling almost everything about the show. Things can more naturally maintain a vision that way.

The funny thing is Seth MacFarlane is actually a fantastic writer, comedian, and all around good guy. American Dad has less cutaways and its great, and The Orville is one of the best live action comedies on TV. Unfortunately Family Guy started as a bad Simpsons parody and unexpectedly turned into a cash cow he let get milked by some of the worst and uninspired writers in Hollywood.

The cut scenes could've been made 10 seasons prior to there use and nobody would've known. Punchlines with no setup, lazy time fillers with only the outward appearance of a joke. I had a problem with it because i thought i was the only one that had problem with it. Sure, i guess for you it was just a repetitive phrase, (congratulations on picking up on that "formula"), apparently i had a more substantive issue with it.

It's so weird that they literally accurately portrayed the initial family guy concept art in that thumbnail. Because family guy doesn't animate its own stuff. I feel for trey and Matt. Because all of the family guy animation does and still does get outsourced to China or taiwan for animation. It's understandable that these guys are mad. But the soul of their work it really shows through. It's a labour of love, and even 12 years after a clip. I can still think of a South Park clip that comes up occasionally. I can't really think of a single family guy clip. It's as forgettable as big bang theory. American dad though. Solid up until season 5.

@@dannyspelman1468 There's absurdism like Hankie the Christmas Pooh that is irreverent on purpose and then there is lazy writing like in Family Guy with all the cutaway gags and the over reliance on "awkward" or drawn out humour. The scene where Peter holds his knee in pain goes on for like 1 and a half minutes, or that episode where they introduce Conway Twittie and they just use pre recorded footage of a random old Country Star. The only joke being made in that 2 minute scene is "why is Conway Twittie being shown in the middle of a Family Guy episode"? Moreover these drawn out scenes eat up valuable time meaning the writers don't have to work as hard. Family Guy feels lazy because of these issues. Yes there's humour in over reliance on jokes (the Monty Python parrot sketch is just using the thesaurus to say the same thing, but it's still clever because they are creative in telling the same stupid joke). South Park uses satire and social commentary to make crass jokes. Family Guy makes crass jokes about nothing. To me that's the biggest difference.

I got a few laughs out of it and found some of the message interesting but I'm sorry if I just don't get it because I did find a lot of it childishly stupid. I understand that South Park was trying to provide social commentary along with their humour but I also found it to have an over reliance on shock humour and that doesn't really appeal to me. You could argue that Family Guy uses some form of social commentary in its own way, if not quite as much as South Park but remember, they are two different shows. That's one thing I don't get. The South Park creators seem to have some sort of problem with the Family Guy team making a DIFFERENT kind of show with a different style of comedy to theirs. What's their problem? Did they actually want to be completely ripped off? Is it an ego thing? They can continue making South Park and South Park fans will continue to watch, as long as they don't dip in quality themselves. They shouldn't be worried what Family Guy is doing, so long as they are keeping up the good work. Some people like the cutaway gags and some people will find a singing and dancing piece of shit to be a profound message in the artistic realm of absurdist, philosophical intellectualism. However not everyone is looking for artistic stimulation or social commentary in a cartoon. A lot of people are just looking for a laugh. I do love Monty Python though.

Same for Family Guy. The first 4 seasons I actually like and then it just became a vehicle for random gags and cutaway jokes that just felt lazy. Nice man I really like the throught you put into this reply. I think you're right that it seems a bit hypocritical for the SP creators to shit on Family Guy so much when they use the same kind of humour. I assume a lot of the resentment comes from effort. South Park produces each episode weekly on a tight schedule and they really put a lot of time and effort into it. There's a neat doc where they show the behind the scenes and they really work for each episode. By contrast, the Family Guy writers seems to just use random humour as the default and this creates the impression that they don't try. I think it's similar to photo realistic painters criticizing "modern" artists like Jackson Pollack. They spent years to get to this level and here's a guy spilling paint on a canvas and he makes more money than them. Not that I think SP creators are geniuses, but they do care about their show and I think this leads to resentment towards Family Guy because it appears on the surface that Family Guy is a lazy show. Your last point is perfect though. Some people like the social commentary, some poeple like the dancing poo, some people like the cutaway gags and there's room on tv for all of them. The SP creators aren't producing high art so it does seem hypocritical to shit on a show simply because it's lazy. That just seems pretentious to me. Agreed, I love Monty Python.

One of Seth MacFarlane's main defences against the pointed criticism of Matt & Trey is that cutaway gags aren't easy. That somehow, filling out to 20+ minutes with cutaways is as hard a process as producing 20+ minutes of funny plot-driven narrative. Now, perhaps he said that because he thinks that the general public don't know one way or the other. And if that was his thinking, that only writers, specifically comedy writers, know the difference, in large measure he's probably right. The fact remains, he claimed that cutaways aren't easy. I'd contend that, "Remember the time that (character name) did something incongruous with something else incongruous with the possible inclusion of a pop culture reference" is a lot easier than staying with the story for the entire episode.

^^^Doesn't know what constitutes good writing. If Seth said that, he's full of shit. Non sequitors are the easiest thing to write in terms of comedy. Everyone knows the process (which was lampooned with the manatees on South Park): throw a ball around the room, and whoever catches it has to say the first thing that comes to their mind; do it three times, and link the three ideas in any absurd way. It literally takes no effort, especially considering it's an entire team contributing to each one. As far as their plots are concerned, it relies entirely on distracting you from the fact that they have no way to end a scene. And they're almost entirely reliant on ex machina endings. They simply do not make sense from a writer's perspective. They're like little Zack Snyder movies: a collection of scenes that are supposed to be connected, but without the actual cause and effect build up that makes for sensible plots. Deriving humor from plot is probably the most challenging way to write comedy. That's why so many "comedy" movies are terrible. It's a skill that Matt and Trey **really** have locked down. Plot driven comedy takes planning. Non sequitors take...a fucking ball, apparently.

Howard Beale I love alot of South Park, but they have definitely passed their prime. And connecting the season episodes through a loose arc seems like good writing, but it allows them to take one talking point and stretch it so far that it slaps them back in their creative faces. It's not funny to use the same punchline for an entire season. Its pure laziness. And I agree, the cut away gag is not hard to write, but comedy isn't about respecting the writing. It's a visceral reaction. That's why when you try to explain a joke it loses that underlying impetus that made it funny to begin with. So if something makes you laugh, don't analyze it too hard. Just go with it. It served it's purpose.

@Alexander Waterfield That’s what you see when you only watched a few episodes, but when you watch more you see character development. I mean, Peter stays dumb, but in some emergency cases he also can be smart. At first it may not seem like it, and it may seem like Family guy is just a bunch of random jokes, but when you watch more you can see that the show’s more than just that. Stewie for example always says that he hates the dumb people in the family, but in a lot of episodes it is also shown that he cares deeply about them. Family guy also gets serious at times, for example when Brian told Stewie that he has a gun in case he ever wants to commit suicide. I respect South Park, as well as Family Guy :)

I mean. I'm not saying south park has gone downhill this last seasons, but they are trying to be (in my opinion) too serious and conscious about social issues. I think there are three stages for this in the series. First 1-5 seasons, where there was only fart but hilarious jokes, not much inside. Then 6-18 seasons with a mix of funny, sarcastic humor with real world's issues, real good. And from there to season 22, almost 23 comes the continuity format, which isn't horrible, but it isn't as hilarious and entertaining as before, which is the point, because when they added the continuity to the series, they added a more serious filter to the stories, and lost that raw vigorous humor style with it, they can try but the continuity won't work with south park formula. Season 23 was pretty good except for the tegrity farms stuff sometimes. Thanks for coming to my ted talk lmao.

Seth mcfarlene CAN write genuinely good stories without any cutaways or gags. (Literally any brian and stwwie standalone episode, ted, ted 2, million ways to die in the west) Its just that he likes doing the cutaway gags a lot more and the reason current family guy is ass is cuz he basically ditched the show around season 10 to 11 ish

U gotta set up an entire joke within 30 seconds that needs to introduce us to new characters, have an arc and a punchline. Just look at the writing process of family guy. I ain't saying it's harder than south park but it ain't easy WHEN it's good. I'll admit that when a cutaway is bad its trash but when their good they're genuinely good. Also just because something is mainstream dosent mean it's bad. Sure it may be unfair for things that are better but it dosent make the thing bad. Genuinely think n form an actual mf opinion instead of copy pasting Trey n Matt's stuff. I think south park is better than family guy btw.

Any other show has to work to incorporate the joke into the plot, figure it in to how the characters interact and work, and ensure it doesn't interrupt with the flow of the show. With family guy, the setup just has to be "Statement related to joke. Cut to joke. Return to scene."

I think family guy was genuinely great pre-cancellation. As soon as I heard they were bringing it back I was ecstatic back when I was a freshman in high school. I was still a fan of FG at this point...the very first episode post cancellation FG I immediately noticed the drop in quality. I forced myself to continue watching during that season and only lasted 6 episodes until I realized new FG was actually really bad. No it was not South Park that made me change my mind about FG, it was well before that South Park episode.

Family Guy rocketed to popularity with easily accessible stories and characters while the other shows mentioned kind of kick the dirt in envy and say "Why don't they like our show more?" with their more niche content. Regardless, I love all the animated comedy shows mentioned here.

South Park is one of the smartest shows on TV, on top of being hilarious. Family Guy admittedly has cheaper gags but I still really like it. As long as the humor is subversive and well executed, I’m on board. American Dad is probably funnier than Family Guy episode for episode actually.
