I get the feeling, reading through the comments, that a lot of people missed the point of the comment "Eating meat doesn't make you a bad person, and not eating meat doesn't make you a good person". The point is that if you try and make people out to be "enemies" and make an "us vs them" mentality, you're going to have a much harder time trying to actually _talk_ to others and help them understand your point of view. If you make someone out to be a villain, an enemy, opposition to what you say is "right and just", you're creating for yourself an uphill battle. Remember that the people eating meat, and the people not eating meat, are all still _people._ Calm down, try and relax a little. I assure you, it'll help. Remember that pointing out instances of others not acting in civil ways is not a good excuse for doing so yourself.

Your video is the only one that's ever made me reconsider my stance on meat. I have vegan friends, I've heard of what goes on at factory farms, I've even read about the antibiotics and greenhouse gas problems, but I've never seen it all presented together, so eloquently, so (apparently) agenda-less, and so dispassionate. I have no moral qualm with eating animals, and I likely never will, but you've convinced me to take a couple days a week to be animal product free. I am Vegan+ (I coined that term). Most of my diet is plant based but if I really feel like eating a steak - I select high quality meat, make an occasion out of it. That way I don't feel like missing out and I don't doubt whether I have enough B12 or not. My health has gone up amazingly and my grocery bills are pretty chill. This is how my great grandmother lived (because meat used to be a rich person's game back in her time) and she lived a long and fulfilling life... So, I am assured that it's not a life neceessity. I remember the village farmer coming over to our place to get drunk when the butcher came to town. He loved his animals - how could you not love those innocent creatures? But also had to allow them to be slaughtered... Maybe there was no alternative livelihood for him but I have about 1000 times more options on how I make my money

Lab grown meat is a godsend. How many people the world over without access to quality protein will be able to feed themselves. How many innocent animals will not have to be slaughtered to feed us. There are people who say horrible things on both sides, and if you seriously don't know of any instance of vegans going ape shit about how evil, depraved, selfish, and destroying the world all meat-eaters are then you either don't frequent comment sections on vegan/diet topics much or are willfully ignoring it.

I work at a steakhouse. I literally cannot express the amount of meat that gets wasted. And, it isn't the restaurant doing the wasting, its the guests. Steak snobs are a real thing. Someone orders a steak, they want it cooked absolutely perfect. Even just a slight variation in the color of the steak will have them saying "send it back, bring a new one." Its almost as if they are proud of it. They flat out refuse to even try a bite. I get it, you order something one way, that's what you should get. If you order any plus temperatures at a steakhouse (medium rare plus, medium plus) you are a steak snob. I promise you that if you were blindfolded and tried a medium versus a medium plus steak you would not be able to identify between the two. My point is, try actually TRYING your steak before you send it back.

Most likely "live" animal meat will slowly be phased out; demand for it will reduce, due to increased demand for lab grown meat when the quality goes up and price starts to come down. Any left over animals that nobody wants to slaughter for meat will wind up in farm sanctuaries, which already exist. But honestly, I suspect there will still be a niche market for live animal meat for a loooong time even when there are more ethical and just as delicious options because humans are fear-driven and afraid of change.

Lab grown meat is something very interesting. Its not a chemical or gmo thing as many think. What actually happens is that a piece of muscle is grown. Instead of growing an animal, and discecting it for its muscle flesh, we just grow muscles directly! This technology in theory works for organs too!!! So, technology for growing meat, instead of animals, is also technologie for organ replacements, healing and medicin! Definitely a field of technology that should be invested in!!! They even revently grew, cooked and served meat in this method. And, while it was only a small thin slab, i still was a absolut success!! Yay for the future!

I don’t think it’s about winning an argument, it’s about the truth of the ‘meat’ and ‘dairy’ industries treatment of animals. There is no justification for the abuse and ultimate death of sentient beings for food, when there are plant based alternatives. I was indoctrinated into the system but for the last two years have been wholly plant based. I feel better for not causing anymore harm to animals consciously, and ultimately the health benefits gained are exponential. But for me it’s the animals that matter...

Well the thing is, that sometimes you need the aggressive fundamentalists to make a difference. I could use the example of the suffragettes, but I won’t because some people think that they were not necessary to the gain of women’s suffrage. Back then when I was growing up overseas, we bought our meat at wet markets and we watched (most times) the slaughtering (usual quick slash to the neck or a quick pound to the head) by the seller. We don't buy one pack of breast or one pack or wings, we just buy one chicken or fish, or one/few parts of the pig (no multiple packed cuts). We eat all parts of the animals, from head to tail, from intestine to blood. I know the world is a different place now but it sends a shiver down my spine every time I see neatly packed meat parts (like the 24 packed wings) in the supermarket. I don't get the super moral bits of killing things as most animals are omnivores (we kept chicken and they would eat worms, insects, smaller animals and...their own kin if given the opportunity) but if I am going to consume another life to fuel my own life I'd rather consume its entirety if possible. Food waste is worse than eating meat on my moral scale.

Packaged meat doesn't mean waste. The corporations behind commercial meatpacking use the waste. Well, they sell it to people who put value on it (hence buying it, lol). There's some waste, but honestly, it's probably less waste than your family leaves, since they're using parts deemed inedible to humans to be part of animal food, fertilizers, biofuels, etc.

A few things left out. Farmed fish are fed with about 5x their weight in wild caught fish, which are caught in huge miles long fishing nets in the ocean. The land used by beef directly contributes deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. All animals are fed with soy from deforestation, including those that claim "grass fed". The land used for milk and cheese per calorie is greater than that used for chicken or pork. Red meat production however uses far more land than any other food.

That’s what I decided to do after long ethical contemplation of eating meat. I love the taste of good steak, greasy bacon, or the occasional game meat, so I don’t want to quit them. At the same time, I feel responsible for the planet and care about my health, so meat-rich diet is not an option. I decided to treat meat as (well…) a treat. I try to eat it less often than twice a week, generally once a week. As I 'use' much less meat, I can afford to buy the best (both in quality, as in animal treatment) meat available. I don’t lose one of my favourite kinds of food, but at he same time I make a difference. A very, very tiny one, but still. Few my friends are hunters and I consider also starting to hunt. Maybe then I could switch to eating only meat I hunted myself, but I don’t know yet TBH.

Something to help with your report, one of the problems with this assessment is not all agricultural land and feed are created equal. No one feeds cows human grade corn unless it's the byproduct of oil presses and distilleries - after the humans used it. No, you cannot feed humans rotting byproducts or grass that grows on largely crappy land not suited for most crops. On top of that, rotating crop fields is a necessary part of restoring nutrients after intensive farming. Land shouldn't be exclusively used for only 1 product, the real problem is monocultures. Global Rice production produces just as much methane as cows do, it's not just meat that is problematic. It's all of agriculture. Yes CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operations) is problematic and shouldn't be the standard either, but this critique glosses over the fact that a small family farm is an artifical ecosystem that works best with both animals and plants. We have chickens because they eat all the insects instead of using pesticides. We have cows, goats, sheep, and other herbivores because it means less gasoline and diesel to run grass cutting machines and use their poop for running Biogas generators. Everyone should be using Biogas for the food waste and poop if you really care about methane production or converting methane into less harmful CO2. Crop farms hire hunters and pest control all the time too, so if you think eating plants kills less animals woo wee sorry to tell you but we kill way more rats and insects and fish each year from crop agriculture than we slaughter animals. Every day is killing day for an unwanted farm pest, whereas livestock on average take 1-3 years to reach market weight. No one goes around and counts all the dead rats hiding in the bushes and holes. Comparing these two realities is disingenuous when you don't even know the real numbers about how living things are affected by humans. You can't really claim an honest ethical high ground as a supermarket vegan just by pretending animals don't die in the process of raising crops

@ProPhilosophy

As a vegan, I couldn't agree more. There's a place for activism; but this information needs become mainstream... I mean, vegans have been saying all of the same things this video did for years, but even the word vegan just triggers people enough not to listen. That being said, think a little about the conclusion of the video! If you disagree with something morally and know there are better options, is reducing by 1 day a week REALLY enough to align your actions with your morals? It's a fantastic stepping stone and if everyone did it, it would have a big impact. And to be honest, I did this myself (reduced animal products to limited meals, days per week, and eventually vegetarian), but from there the logical transition is to completely or at-least almost entirely animal product free because that's just where my morals sit... I decided my actions should at-least reflect that the vast majority if not all of the time. I hope that people can see it the same way too (but I also respect that not everyone is there yet or agrees, and that's fine).

Danger Pear If I am being honest, this video while it is very fair and ‘neutral’ it is largely speaking an education video on why humans treat animals bad. It is a little biased against meat. I love meat btw. But I wont say it is completely neutral, since that would be impossible due to innate bias Hell, you said and the video said “not eating meat doesnt make you a good person and eating meat doesnt make you a bad person.” Setting aside this one statement, the video portrays factory farming in a bad light while ignoring lab grown meat or free range meat largely as a topic, probably because most of our meat is made in cruel factory farms. Which is unethical Because the video explains it so Is it really neutral since it explains the majority of our meat is made this way? Care to explain some more points I missed? (Not trolling, legit question to you.)
@Sensiav703
@Sensiav703 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it's entirely neutral, but not for lack of effort. The only major flaw is that they focused too hard on the environmental and ethical angle, and not even touching on how business and government forces are ensuring its continuation in its current form. For example, it's not that people are eating meat just because meat is good, but because meat is also a lot more affordable for the average person compared to any other food group, at least in the West. Poor people in the West have diets high in meat, especially fatty meats, because of its affordability and lower perish rate compared to healthier options. Incidentally, this is also a reason why the obesity epidemic primarily affects the poor. This video should get a part 2 to touch on the more pragmatic issues surrounding this topic.

Lab grown meat is coming, but the first products are going to be a luxury product. Large scale production needs more innovations. One key problem with lab growing meat is that muscle cells need a surface to attach to, and this is why the cells have been grown in very thin layers. There are no blood vessels in lab grown meat and oxygen and nutrients can reach only so far down a layer of cells. The cells beyond this die. An option that is researched is to use beads floating in the growth medium that the cells can attach to allowing far more volume for the cells to grow. Btw I made a video on how lab grown meat is made in my channel.

Yasseen Moussalli price wise it will be cheaper - you don't need to feed your labgrown meat any water or food and if you once have the tissues and equipmentou need it's not so expensive. And when it comes to taste it will taste excactly the same because it practically is exactly the same! About cuisine flexibility I don't know tho

My first job was on a farm where they raised chickens, cows, and pigs - just as mentioned in this video. This video is the sesame street version of the real thing. I’ve never seen meat the same since. The suffering and pain these little guys lived thru all day everyday was sickening. I really have trouble thinking what to type out next to describe the horror and torture we humans put them thru. If you take anything out of this video, realize that the meat was a living creature. Treat it with respect. Try and minimize food waste and consider adding more veggies to your diet.

I used to raise lambs for stock shows here in texas. One of the things I tried to do was provide the absolute best possible life for each and every lamb I raised, and treated them with the utmost respect. However, most of the people I met in the showbarn regularly drugged their lambs and did extremely cruel things to the sheep. I eat pretty much no meat (I'll eat seafood if I have to, cuz texas) because I know that the amount of good I did for my lambs was not as enough to make the meat industry a safe and humane place to eat, at least for me to continue supporting it. If others want to eat meat, im all fine, but I personally just can not because I have seen the inside of a lot of this stuff, and it has forever changed me, hopefully for the good.

People's defense mechanisms really show when the topic of meat is discussed. Stop using the fact that some vegans make you uncomfortable as a way to avoid discussions about the meat industry and to not have to think about it. Yeah, some vegans are preachy, but as someone who is not vegan what I see is that meat-eaters are usually just as preachy but with fewer arguments. We love to have the archetype of the preachy vegan to hate because it's easier to attack people than ideas.

Agree, I have been called many bad things for eating meat, I do agree that we need to lower our consumption for the sake of the environment. Vegetarians and vegans that harass meat eaters repells me. Also there is good side of the meat industry where animals live a good life, sure the price goes up but I am willing to pay.

Go look at all the damage just growing Almonds in California is causing, they are drying up the Nevada river to keep their farms watered. The oasis that Las Vegas was built by is gone, dried up when California tapped the Nevada to feed the growing farms need for water.

It's really well put together but the content is pretty confusing. At first they tell us how immoral and bad meat industry is, and at the end they promote it and say its okay to eat it? How is it okay with the info at the start?

@@allandm They say that because cutting meat all together from the world diet is not just wishful thinking, it's impossible. Yeah sure if they said it a few dozen people would be convinced and would stop eating meat alltogether, but the truth is most other people who have access to meat will just...keep eating it. As they said, meat is deeply satisfying on a primal scale and we can't really resist it easily, so of course most of the populus won't

@@InitiateDee well, we can't stop everyone in the world from raping, it's not just wishful thinking, it's impossible. Does that mean we might as well do it too and not try to stop it from happening? @@allandm It doesn't excuse it, and I don't think they ever say it does, but I mean everyone who watched the video has seen the sides of meat production and how deeply impactful it is, so regardless of what they say in the end it's merely a choice on you and you alone whether or not you're gonna change your diet
