How often people forget that association football is a TEAM sport, and you cannot judge an individual player's *merit* by how many trophies he's won with his *team.* Another thing people basically never bring into account is the fact that the World Cup is MUCH harder to win than it used to be. The number of highly competitive teams has increased *exponentially* since the 1960s/50s. Brazil have won 5 World Cups, that is true. They won *three* of them when Pele was on the team, and they've only won two since Pele retired, and in the time since then, competition has become FAR tougher. Numbers simply don't tell the whole story in sports.

Dan Marino, Karl Malone, Jerry West, and many others were good in their sport, but they'll never be great because they never won it all. They've all carried mediocre teams much farther than their "rightful" place Ronaldo is doing it right now, but Portugal side is seriously lacking, but Messi? Messi is pitiful and this comes from a perspective of someone who always prefered Messi's style, but he isn't a leader, he doesn't inspire his team to play better, to play harder, to go beyond. In this way, Ronaldo surpassed him, not with his skills, but his drive. Ro Na you should REALLY invest in trying to learn where the players come from. It's not only Ronaldo. Patricio is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, and he plays for a big team in Portugal even though they're small in the champions league. Porto and Benfica are some of the biggest names you can see in Europe. Sporting is the biggest academy to bring big names out, two of them: Ronaldo and Figo. Most of the players in the Portugal squad are on big teams, you have players from Barcelona, Real Madrid, Napoli, Inter, AC Milan, etc. And we are not one of the big countries, but we're not that much smaller than Spain, France or Germany

Messi and Ronaldo is not yet retiring. They will most likely still be playing for World Cup 2022. I don't think 2018 is their last World Cup. Although I don't know if they can get 2022 World Cup though. Messi might have a chance w/ Argentina as long as Romero is back as their goalkeeper. He was a great goalkeeper for Argentina and his saves in penalties against Netherlands in the semi-finals back on WC 2014 is the main reason they are even on the finals in the first place. This WC 2018, Romero didn't play for Argentina and you can see it affected the team. There were goals that they let in that could have been an easy save. I think if he's back on 2022 and Messi play on his A-game they may finally get it. Luck will be a part of it too.
