Michael Keaton had all the qualities that made Batman such a compelling character. More than any of the other actors who played the role.

I always felt the rigidity of the costume lent itself to the more than human aspect of the character. He was trying to portray himself as a supernatural entity and the way he moves didn't seem natural and typically human.

@@MikkoSimila He's never out of breath; totally in control. Even in that penultimate fight scene with the henchman in the belfry, when he's on his last legs after crashing the Batwing and climbing the spire, he seems supernaturally agile and relaxed. There is definitely something surreal about the way Keaton played Batman as a force of nature that possesses Bruce Wayne.

This was exactly how I felt. No one could top Michael Keaton's performance. It was just pure perfection. Batman is all about projection - casting out a beacon of menace that psychically defeats the criminal before physically overpowering them. Nobody-NOBODY...did that better than Keaton. He embodied that feeling, that spirit. It was all in his eyes...Keaton did it all by looking at you. He didn't need to try, he didn't need to go overboard with intimidation....he WAS pure intimidation. Nobody else had that power, that depth.

Talking about the duality (Which Tim Burton alone truly understood) just made me realise why Tim could see Keaton playing the joker as good as Batman! Now for any actor that's unique. I think this review could have hit the bulls eye for a definitive answer to how Keaton made the cast. The entire premise of Batman 1989 was the fact that while Batman was keeping an eye on the Joker the reporters / Vicky was interested in the more dangerous and mysterious freak according to them - the Batsy! And then in the finale they spill it out literally when Jokers says - 'You made me' and Batman replies - ' You made me first! Keaton is the gold standard for batman. He isnt the billionaire playboy his bruce Wayne is a bit anti social, a bit awkward & hes traumatized & obsessed. Basically he seems like a guy nutty enough to dress up as a bat. Even though alfred letting viki vale into the batcave was controversial I think the lines in that scene are perfect. " are we gonna try to love eachother?" Bruce : " I'd like to but hes out there right now ( joker ) & I've gotta go to work. Perfection. They also tried to show that bruce & joker are two sides if the same coin when bruce comes into vikis apt he says nice place lots of space. The joker walks in & says the exact same thing. That was purposeful.

What I love about Keaton's Bruce Wayne which differed from the comics and other iterations was his reclusiveness. No one at the party in the '89 opening knew what he looked like, nor was his parents deaths well known as Vicky and Knox discovered it digging through old newspapers. He wasn't about the spotlight like Kilmer, Clooney, and Bale, yet he gives the police a spotlight at the end of the film so they can call Batman. It's as if the role was reversed between Batman and Wayne's persona, as Wayne was the more mysterious one in a similar vein to that of Reeve's distinctions between Superman and Clark Kent.

My favorite Batman moment from Keaton was in Batman Returns. His verbal confrontation with Penguin that ends with Penguin asking "You don't really think you'll win do you?" with Batman scoffing and replying with Penguin's line "Things change". Just the ability to have these mannerisms and reactions within the suit that give the character so much more depth than any other actors before or since could accomplish. Keaton's style of performance allows for more humanity to shine through the limitations of the suit than Bale's Batman desperately needed.

Agreed - Keaton's Batman spoke little, but said a lot. Less was clearly more - it was "show" far more than "tell." Compare with the Nolan trilogy where the characters themselves psycho-analyze their own actions, spelling everything out. Not nearly as artistic.

The others actors never felt that way, Keaton played Batman as someone with a split personality and he was capable as being just as crazy as the joker. The let's get nutz scene is great because it shows that Keaton's Bruce can get just as crazy as the Joker, like bring it on, Joker! There's a reason why he's coming back after 30 years.👍

Micheal Keaton is and always will be the best Batman because of his absolutely perfected performance as him, and because he defined who the hero truly is! Not Bruce Wayne, but Batman. The reason I love Keaton’s Batman more than any other Batmen is because he is a dark, mysterious, vengeful Knight that has a personality as Batman more than as Bruce Wayne and all he wants to do is get revenge and justice for the death of his parents. That is who Batman truly is and Keaton perfects that role as Batman perfectly!

What i love about these movies is the mystery. Bruce Wayne seems like a normal regular guy, not a big show off party star. Just a guy keeping to himself. Hes not sure how to be rich, because he would give it all up to be with his parents again. Also, Batman is a mystery. He doesnt talk to the cops, hes like a phantom, a guy not sure if hes to trust or not. Theres something about Keatons calm and quiet way, both in Bruce Wayne and Batman, thats so fascinating. Hes not a man of big words, the movies almost keep him so pure and innocent, like hes untouchable. Kilmer had a good performance with his psychological insights and how he suffers from it. I loved that. Bale brought a lot of angst and just rage to the table, more of a guy that goes beyond sanity. I like that too. But Keaton will always have a special place in my heart because of the things we dont know about him. He treated the Batman Character with respect. Also, it was the first time for a serious development of the character and i give him a lot of credit for that, because its hard to reinvent a hero who was more known for his campy side than for his dark torn persona.

The duality and especially the "he is about the snap" is what makes Keaton the best Batman, he is a tortured soul. The scene where he just waits in his sofa , no lights, in silence, lost in his memories, only to see change in his face and eyes when the bat signal lights up, amazing. You never have somethign like that with Bale, he is super focused and confident like James Bond, yes he gets sad, even depressed, but he never truly looses it. I also love Keatons social awkwardness in his portrayal of Bruce, even Batman, you feel somethign was taken from him, the traum that never healed. Havent watched the new Batman with Robert Patinson, but from the trailer i would say he is like a young inexperienced Keaton with less emotional controll, socially distanced and brooding in a more direct "young way".

I’ve watched this film 3 times this week after i heard the news of the Batman ‘89 comic and have come the the same conclusion. It’s rare to find a video or essay about this movie on the internet that felt like the writer PAYED ATTENTION to the movie. I’ve always felt that this movie wasn’t a Joker movie with Batman in it, like i hear a lot of people say it is and that’s primarily because of Keaton’s performance in this movie adding a lot of dimension and depth to his portrayal. Sure, Joker’s story is more pronounced, but that’s the point. Joker is wild and crazy and Batman is shadowy and mysterious. The way each of their stories are told fits their characters. Thank you.

I feel like voice acting and live acting should be separate as far as comparisons go. Heath Ledger was arguably the best joker (If anyone argues it's Joaquin Phoenix I'm not going to disagree either), but Mark Hamill is the Joker's voice. Flat out. It's the same with Batman. Bale was fantastic, though Keaton did a lot of things better. At the end of the day though Conroy is Batman's voice.

I certainly agree with everything you said about Michael Keaton's Batman. He really did set the standard for every dramatic portrayal of the hero. He's also always had the coolest Batsuits and Batmobile in my book. I didn't agree with your opinion on Kevin Conroy though (RIP). You should rewatch BTAS episodes like "Perchance to Dream" or "I Am the Night" or even the Mask of the Phantasm movie, cuz they showcased his own talent at portraying the tortured version of Batman. And as far as kids cartoons go, BTAS is just about the edgiest kids cartoon show there's ever been (especially compared to past superhero cartoons before it). Anyway, great vid about Keaton's version. Can't wait to see him play Batman again in the Flash movie, even if the movie itself turns out to be a mess like most other recent DC movies have been.

Another tool that enhanced and magnified the actor's style and persona was the molding of the cowl. Each Batman had their own "Cowl Persona" and Keaton's was no different. It was perfect for him. The cowl blunted almost all of the facial acting thus how it was molded became the acting assistant to the star behind it.

Batman Returns is probably my personal favorite Batman film right next to Batman Forever and the 89 film, though now that I think about it I liked the 89 film a little more than Forever though I still consider Forever among my favorites, even Batman & Robin was pretty fun. Batman I think works the Best in a 1930's/40's Noir style aesthetic, and on top of that Tim Burton had an amazing creative vision where he made the Batman characters his own, and gave them a unique style that most Superhero movies don't do.

I wouldn’t say he’s the most comic accurate Batman, but Keaton made me believe as a kid that becoming Batman was doable 😂 I didn’t need to be buff and had to train with a league of ninjas

Love it Love it Love it yes! Everything you said is the reason why l love Michael Keaton Batman, he just was scary and intemidating and was so inhuman and other worldly. Everything that Nolan tried to do with Christian Bale's Batman but in some ways failed he forgot one thing that Batman can be some what realistic but he must also keep one foot in the world of the fantastic as well and Keaton did that masterfully.

Nice analysis. Can you imagine Michael Keaton's Batman and Heath Ledger's Joker. It would have been something.

Keaton is the best Batman because he had a kick but Attitude when he was Batman that none of the others could accomplish . It’s also all about the suit . Batman Returns was the best suit. The cowl along with the rest was perfect And in my opinion unmatched to this day .

Indeed Keaton's batman feels truly insane and unhinged like batman should be.

Totally agree with you! Literally every word of your analysis is spot on. For me, Keaton IS Batman. That moment when he says 'What' in the Batman voice when he hears the Joker say his 'Ever dance with the devil' line highlights that duality and the heart and soul of Batman.

Best Batman = Micheal Keaton, Best Superman = Tom Welling. They should make a movie together. But Warner Brothers being Warner Brothers that would be impossible.

Comedians are funny because they typically (not always) know how to hide their despair behind humor. They know how to turn their struggle into performance. This is my opinion. Michael Keaton is my favorite of all time. And I agree with you.

Like you said, comedy requires conviction. Comedy requires introspection. Extroverts can be funny, but it is all about pleasing others rather than their internalities/internal battles coming to life. Sorry if I am not sounding proper/educated. But again, I 100% agree with your video.

Keaton's turn in 'Clean & Sober' showed what he could do in a serious take. Agreed, ignoring all other aspects of a Batman production, Keaton's take on Bruce I believe for my thought on Batman is the most accurate. Most nuanced, most cryptic. The problem with Keaton's take is that Bruce/Batman says so little, it doesn't give that role a much to 'focus' on like say, Bales. It would've been hard to make a Keaton/Burton Batman the focus because Keaton played him so, 'I don't want to be seen' vs. Nolan's trilogy which all about Bruce. Both were great takes, obviously. Burton's risked becoming a 'who's the next villain' episodic movie. So there's a plus and minus to Keaton's take. Still my favorite.
