This is actually kind of sad...It's insane how pushing too many dolls out killed monster high's sales but I guess it makes sense because overflow of products usually results in this. Yes! I'm one a the older fan who's loving the reboot.. The only thing I wasn't happy is after they went on a huge budget cut and only create low budget non articulated dolls.. As a fan myself I would try to get my hands on those i really do love when they 1st came in stores.. but i have friends who waited for them to go on sales as they always do.. so i guess it's true that too much is killing the doll line.. you can see something like this is happening to barbie.. I'm not a barbie fan but i can see that it is starting to die off soon

It's quite unfortunate how it all ended. Monster High was amazing and so innovative back in the day. I really hope they continue with their Collectors Dolls since most people who grow with these dolls can now afford pricier dolls on their own. Maybe they could release 3 to 4 Collector dolls per year? But, with the original characters of course. Pennywise and the Twins were nice, but I want to see Draculaura, Frankie, Clawdeen, Cleo, Spectra, Venus, Catty, etc.

I don't think it's a mystery or grand conspiracy as to why MH ended, it seems to have just its course as toy brand do. Every single successful franchise experiences explosive growth in the beginning but that never lasts so it's the job of the toy creators and company to make sure that fans stay hooked for as long as possible as the audience slowly shrinks. As you said, ever brand reaches maximum popularity and but then the audience will always get smaller and smaller once that early apex is reached. With toy themes like MH, it's usually because the original fan base ages out of the toy or moves onto something new. Companies can slow the decline by continuing to release high quality toys and stories but even then nothing lasts forever and you can't stop kids from getting older and having different interests. Sure brands like MH will always have fans that will stick by no matter what but that hardcore fanbase isn't enough to keep a theme going, you need to appeal to the massive kid audience. Monster High was super popular when it burst onto the scene and it looks like it hit its peak in 2012-ish. They seemed to be losing a bit of popularity in 2013 and but it was still certainly popular. But by 2014 it was on a clear downward trend. Worried Mattel executives then decided to make some serious changes like lower quality dolls and a reboot, but instead of saving the brand it look like it just killed it faster. But again, all of this is ok, it happens to nearly every toy brand, they peak and then they regress. That's what happened to all the famous toys of the 80's Transformers, GI Joe, MLP, Polly Pocket, Littlest Pet show etc. None of them stayed popular, they peaked and then they faded into obscurity. But if your theme was successful enough, you can always wait a few years and then reboot it. That's how those 80's brands survived, they obviously are no longer in their original incarnations, but because of steady reboots that tapped into nostalgia combined with a new kid audience who weren't around when the theme first stated, they are still relevant. That's all MH needs to do. Take some time to regroup and plan for a reboot, let nostalgia build, and then break back onto the scene as a new generation that can appeal to the original fans (some of whom have kids) and new kids who weren't alive/aware of MH when it first came out. All they need is a good, well thought-out reboot and MH will do alright. Then once the reboot loses steam after several years, rinse and repeat to reboot again.

This is an important piece of the puzzle. Obviously it wasn't "Karen" who killed Monster High, but to get the full scope, the reports need to be paired with the dolls released for that year. Mattel started to cut corners with articulation and clothing quality, so fans started skipping dolls. Thus less money made. Thus more corners cut. It was incredibly stupid for them to think that a reboot was what would fix their problems. "Will you buy our cheaply made crap if we put an ugly, airhead babyface on it?"

It’s just so sad what happened to the monster high lineage. I remember when I was younger and unable to buy the dolls, I would think, “When I’m older and have money, I’ll go all in!” But then they changed the design entirely. I felt the exaggerated CARTOONY design made it easy for kids to see the best qualities within themselves reflected in the fictional characters. But with the new more realistic design I feel it will only heightens the insecurities of the young viewers as the “what could be’s” turn into “the what is”. Which basically sets things in stone. Like the “vagueness” of the original monster high is what made it so great. Now everything is defined to a T for you and nothing is left to the imagination. Like there’s no more space for the imagination of the child because they’ll just be told exactly what to feel and how to think.

I’m to understand, Ever After High threatened the success of the Disney Princess dolls, and Mattel wasn’t allowed to focus too heavily on it after a time, lest Disney pull its still fairly lucrative franchise from their lineup. This is why Ever After High died. If Monster High ended just because of brand fatigue, they did alright. If they fix the stupid faces, they could still come back.

I have some hope monster high may come back. The recent skullcollector dolls they made were going in the right direction in bringing back mh. They listened to fans and went back to the old design. Now if they do come back they should stick to the original monster high story, not the reboot one as though that one is confusing. Also since most monster high fans are older now it should be targeted towards an older audience. Personally I think Mattel would be successful if they picked up the monster high and ever after high crossover, but there is no mention of ever after high coming back which is extremely disappointing because the show was so good.

So that’s why all the creators who made the Monster High dolls were already transferred to the new company. I think the last episode of The Adventures of the Ghoul Squad is Part 4: Home for the Howlidays. That's the time when all the creators are left. This is two years before the pandemic. Now the reboot was made already but it could be the same creators who made the series. I personally do not think Monster High needs a come back so soon as Mattel cannot manage it with how they are paying everyone right now. Parents got sick and tired of purchasing the same doll over and over with just new clothes on them. I feel that many toy companies suffer when people look for “deals” or “sales”. Waiting for an item to be on sale hurts the toy company because it makes the corporations (Walmart, target, etc.) believe that the consumer is not interested in the item, so they stop ordering the items and put the remaining items on sale. I remember that when Monster High was at its prime; many big youtubers encouraged children to look for sales or wait for the toys to be on sale. I think this was part of the problem. I understand that toys are expensive, but that’s just how it works. Unfortunately it’s all business.

Nobody would have a chance to wait for sales if Mattel wasn’t oversaturating the market. More than just 1 million people who may have watched youtubers made up the billion dollar MH doll empire... Originally you COULD NOT wait to buy a MH doll... if you did she’d be totally gone and cost $100 more than she would have. Mattel pushed waayyyyy too many dolls out and lost the allure of the dolls. Blaming some youtubers and consumers for waiting for sales seems a touch classist and doesn’t address most of the toy market

There are many reasons for Mattel’s downfall. We can’t really rule out what happened or didn’t happen. I would never call anybody a classist simply because of their opinion. That’s a little insensitive. This is based solely on my experience. I as a child remember this. You can’t argue with someone’s experience/ memory.

Bro they ruined my girl Abby by making her a sweetheart. Gimme back my sassy and blunt yeti! And, love the broader representation, but changing Lagoona from Ausie to Hispanic enraged me. Her design is so different I don't recognize her. They could've added a new character or changed a different character (Honestly the wolf family being Hispanic would have been so much cooler and more fitting). Draculara's accent was stolen from us and it was a lot of her charm, kinda a selling point for me on why i loved her. Monster high was my childhood and I'm only 15.

My daughter and friends grew up with the original dolls and the difference in the dolls as well as the storyline was amazing. Actually being a consumer of such dolls the report is correct. Too many of the same dolls saturated the market when they should have concentrated on content and new characters only. The old movies and series where great and there should have been more. The reboot and new story line sucks. The live movie sucks. They are too PC and not true to what made them different. It is a sad storyline. But I still have my daughter original dolls. More than I can actually house.

They made the dolls less scary and more childish they removed literally everything that fans loved about monster high and tried to appeal to a younger audience. in one of the reboot commercials it literally says that people thought they were to scary so that's why they were rebooting... if that doesn't scream karen I dont know what does lmao

I'm actually very surprised by that-- I was wrong! Though I think the intention behind that message was "we're not scary and we DO have a message!" It's very interesting though! Thank you for sharing, that actually shocked me

@@xCanadensis yea its just disappointing that they orginaly did have a message and it was about being yourself and being friends with who you want to be friends with. the dolls all having individual characteristics and "flaws" really helped drive home that message but then with the reboot they watered everything down and made them all look the same... just my take at least

Monster High should not come back (at least as of right now). There are multiple reasons why: 1)Mattel makes major budget cuts. That lowers doll quality. 2)There is no real trend for MH to really grasp on in order to become once again popular among children. Maybe alternative fashion trends could work but it's unlikely. 3) Over the years the storytelling became weak. Characters became one dimensional even with the flaws, the story was not interesting and so on 4) Mattel designers cannot keep up with trends, which was evident by cheap-looking and print-oriented designs. This resulted in dolls looking tacky. Example: Electrified line which (as far as I know) was worked on by Rebecca herself!

To be honest, it’s sad how well the likes of Rainbow High and LOL dolls are performing when Monster High was right here. Monster High is arguably the most innovative and unique doll to hit shelves...but maybe at the end of the day girls want big-headed, baby doll type dolls to play with more than ghouls and ghosts. I appreciate all 3 lines, but as far as gorgeousness and uniqueness goes there is simply no competition.

@@xCanadensis hmm...but was it really more oversaturated than any other major doll line that does well? Something just wasn’t there anymore. To be fair, its lifespan wasn’t anything to sneeze and a 7-ish year run seems decent (I definitely don’t see Rainbow High lasting as long, for instance). Ultimately I’d love Monster High to come back, but only in its original creative state. I had major issues with the reboot, personally.

MH would still be here and had plenty of lasting potential but Mattel pushed them too hard. If they were to come back in a relatively faithful form to an original with less of an attack on the toy aisle, I think they would remain a staple and stick around for a long, long time. I don't think its lifespan was something to sneeze at either... but they had much more potential and snuffed it early which shocked and disappointed so many people. RH I can actually see sticking around for a long, long time if they keep releases fairly regular and spread out. RH has sort of attacked us but it seems releases have slowed slightly? We'll see... OMG has maintained its place as a staple and as a consistently strong line so their success doesn't surprise me. The fact that they release less than 20 dolls pet year is probably the major factor behind their success-- give fans and kids time to collect them *all* and don't let them all hit clearance shelves (they still do- all dolls do... but they disappear fast)

@@xCanadensis See, I feel like Monster High really wasn’t too pushed on us. But that may be because I became a fan in late 2014, around the time Freaky Fusion came about. If I recall, they had two lines per year - one with core characters in a new “situation” (with maybe one newbie) and one in the Fall with mostly all new characters. That doesn’t seem horribly oversaturated, BUT things may have been different before my obsession. On the topic of RH, I feel like there’s just nowhere to go if that makes sense? They’re based on colors and that kind of pigeonholes them into a shelf life. How many greens can there be? How many pinks? (We already have 3 links as it is) I have them all, but I’m already wondering how they can carry a full new line for series 3 without just redoing more of the same colors. MH had absolutely unlimited and untapped potential because there is no limit to what monsters there can be nor how unique they can be.

I believe that because Mattel kept pumping out doll after doll, it became too much for parents and doll buyers to keep up with. Of course the reboot which was connected with the loss of the Princess doll didn't help either, making a fav doll look like a bad fake is never a good look. Its a shame and its better left in the past than another terrible expensive reboot. And no I am not keen on the horror dolls, they make no sense to me. Very informative video and I really enjoyed it. Hey how would you feel if MGA buys the rights to Monster High they could have the old molds back and ad the quality from OMG and Rainbow High to them and keep the original story and bring back Garrett Sanders I'm sure that they want to capture the esthetic and forget the reboot because I'm sure they know how bad it was. That was speculation and was misguided. Bad publicity happened throughout all of monster high so why did the reboot happen five years into the line? It doesn’t add up. The reboot was a last ditch attempt to save monster high by making a change- their change was not a good decision clearly but it had literally nothing to do with this made up “Karen” enemy. Mattel made too many dolls and fans lost interest.

So many people hate the reboot, but i think they give unnecessary hate to it. It did gave some bad changes, but some good ones too, and they get the credit they deserve.
