I love going to the farmer's market as a vendor. It may not be the best for sales, but it's the highlight of my week. Talking to folks about plants, food, and all manner of subjects!

I feel like that is one of the actual benefits of going to markets: making an appearance in the region and getting to know people and preferences of locals. And for oneself: getting out there and socialise.

In northern WI, too. Anywhere it's not full of huge, hedge less monoculture fields &/or subdivisions, and I'm guessing also related to fields or neighborhoods sprayed with insecticides.. . Some neighborhoods here do for mosquitoes and ticks once a year. Idk what else that spray affects.

Yeah, my parents moved all over the country till I hit 7th grade. I don't know about accents, but maybe the reason we became market gardeners is because we just wanted to finally put down some roots.

At this point I feel very strongly that interplanting is way more possible on a 4 foot width production bed as opposed to the standard 30in bed. 30in just feels so tight to try and squeeze crop and beneficial in, while the 4ft beds seem to create just enough room for more interplanting options.

This year I had a marigold area that kinda spread a bit more than I would have liked it. But I learned that it is VERY good at stopping my yard from getting into the garden. I'm having thoughts that this year I'll have a hedge row of marigolds to line that part of my yarden boarder. Maybe even shape them up like a box wood on the lawn side a bit.

@@ZaraThustra-w2nit’s a psychological response that is a response to oppression. Clearly you haven’t had been forced to assimilate so good for you! Your privilege has protected you. Not everyone has such protection. Black folks like myself have done it to survive in a white male dominated society. I don’t do it anymore because I no longer care if others are uncomfortable with me being a full, whole self. And Hillary didn’t code-switch. She engaged in culture- appropriation. There is a difference.

Did you speed up the theme song by around 5-10%? The vibrato sounded strangely urgent today. Another element that impacts accent acquisition is closer to what you mention, and that's whether you consciously or unconsciously want to belong to the group with the accent. The more one wants to fit in with this new community, the more quickly one often acquired elements of that accent. And it's not just vowel sounds and such: my sister pronounces her words the same after living in the UK for 6 years as she did before, but the cadence of her voice is much more English than before.

@@ursamajor1936 good to know, thanks. I considered oregano but thought that the near complete shade cast by the ferns might cause an issue eventually. But I’m willing to try it. I was also thinking of direct seeding lobelia or another flowering and reseeding annual that can handle varying levels of sun. It might help to suppress weeds and offer something to the pollinators. I also already have volunteer nasturtium seeds everywhere… we’ll see how they do in that spot.

On the topic of accents: I have heard that people are more innately discriminatory against foreign accents than different skin color. I wonder if that's behind adopting the local accent.
@ajb.822
@ajb.822 Ай бұрын
Idk. I heard years ago it was related to how empathetic one was, and women are more likely to start to adopt an accent fairly quickly. I am one such, and that has incl. even accents or languages I dislike/find annoying sounding, and nothing to do with wether or not I was attracted or the opposite to the culture or etc. of the ppl group. For ex., I basically hate the German accent and sound of the language, and tho I am mostly German, am much more drawn to the British isles, the Mediterranean/Italy/Spain and the Americas, and love the sound of Russian and Australian language/accents the most. Yet, after binge watching Hogan's heroes while sick several years ago, I was finding myself thinking and speaking w the accent and the few German words I knew ! ( and hating the sound of the language less).

Thx, cause I 've planned to eventually put some alyssum to give a try at the control of two-spotted spider mites on tomatoes (yet, I don't think I have to deal much with that pest, but could be). And for marigold, I rode (from research papier) that African marigold is kind or very susceptible to the two-spotted spider mites ; so I could be thinking to stop planting them around tomatoes, as it is usually advised

There are far more companion planting myths than there are factual evidence based successes, that's maybe the problem. You've highlighted two, but there are entire books written on the subject, most of which had no scientific basis at all.

Facts. I think Jesse has mentioned this before.
@ajb.822
@ajb.822 Ай бұрын
I don't know how much of it is truly "made up" but yeah, I am very dubious of most of it now. In particular, if it's given without contact or reasoning etc. , or at least some detail, such as " no known potential reason why, but my beets always grew better when amongst the cucumbers" for ex. ( made that one up). BC for some, it was prob. due to shade, or water needs or something, while others it's much more serious as in the case of allopathic plants being esp. detrimental to certain others, while some may be able to handle them fine. If that knowledge is out there, it needs to be incl., for us to make a truly informed decision. To know if, say, the corn actually SHOULD be 15 ft. away, or if it's just a case of shade and you can work around that issue in other ways On that, most don't mention how close is close, and how far those which "dislike" each other, need to be ! Then, as Charles Dowding I think has mentioned (or maybe it was Jesse), some of these were mostly true, or a possible issue, when on a larger scale/ monoculture type setting.
