If they watch the video, they can minimize their mistakes. You are right before you start a business, you need the right location, research, reserve cash, proper marketing, pricing (distributors), minimize the menus, and proper hiring. running a business is harder then working for someone. You have to work just as hard and longer hours until it becomes successful. I live in Florida as well Land O' lakes.

Hello Norberis, I am very sorry about your restaurant. As always, your reports are very interesting and when you talk about reserved cash for months it reminds me of the old days. At that time I often spent the weekends in the old part of Juan Dolio, which was then Plaza Ramada. My wife had family in Guayacanes. 3 Germans also had a restaurant there, there is still one "Bamboo". I knew from my friend Michael that he had a small restaurant right on the beach, barbecues and German cuisine, and also made breakfast for guests of the Ramada House. He always bought the necessary things for the day from the earnings of the day before. A life artist. But times were different back then.

Hi Norberis, I trust all is well. This is another excellent vlog and ALL of the points you make are relavent to any business, anywhere. I've heard or read that at least 60% of all Resturants in the U.S. fail within the first year, and nearly 80 % within five years. Many of the failures due in part to the information you shared about your experience. I would just share one other point that's vert important also; a well written business plan! When I opened my business here in the U.S. ( a haberdashery) in 2003, a complete line of men's and women's dress and casual hats, I realized that I had the necessary capital to open the business, but then I thought, " why should I use all my money, why not get a small business loan from a local bank!" So, I took some classes for small business with the (SBA) Small Business Administration, and at the the end of the course work, I had also completed a business plan for my business. With my personal capital (20k) and my business plan, I applied for and received a small business loan for (20k) from a local bank. This allowed me to stay in business for 15 years in my community, and provided me the necessary capital for marketing and inventory and I'm still on line today. Now, I realize that my experience here in the U.S. Is very different then your R.D. experience, but I share this because many times people here do not take the time to complete a business plan, which could provide additional capital for their business. So, if you and your husband ever decide to bring those "best wings in Santo Domingo" to the U.S., it may be worth considering and for others who may be entertaining a small business...complete a business plan! Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Is Boca Chica and Sousua as populated as Punta Cana or they're not comparable?

Santo Domingo is not considered a tourist area although there are areas that are tourist focused like Zona Colonial. Santo Domingo is more for business than tourism. Yes, Punta Cana is the most popular tourist destination here. Boca Chica and Sosua are small beach towns. Punta Cana is a larger in land mass. Neither of them can compare to Punta Cana.

@ladonacarmen4 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed the video. Excellent information however with regards to the business doing better in a tourist area, the issue with that is that businesses rely on tourists whereas Santo Domingo is self sustaining. The tourist areas only have 3 to 4 months of business and that’s in a good season. Many businesses closedown because of that very reason. Your monthly earnings was still very good. You were averaging $10k usd a month which is very good for a new business even by us standards and especially in the DR despite the weekend being slow. Was the overhead high? What was the overhead costs??? And why didn’t you consider the Zona Colonial as your location??? Your business was amazing!!! Loved this video. ❤️ 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@NorberisR4 жыл бұрын
Thats a great point regarding tourist areas. And that's a decision that needs to be weighed. I agree Santo Domingo can be self sustaining if you are in the right place with the right business. Here in the States you can open a business in lower class neighborhood and be successful because $7 to $10 to a person here is nothing. It's not the same in DR. I could have had a low cost restauarant in low-class neighborhood but people $5 to $7 is a lot to people there. They won't spend that on a 6 piece wing and fries when they can get rice, chicken, beans, salad for $150RD or $250RD which is about $2.50 to $4.50 US. I can't sell wings & fries for $2.50. Selling it at $4.50 was tough. So there is a lot to consider. But I'm glad you asked that question. Yes, overhead was high. I will do a break down video on start up cost and monthly expenses. We were going to open our 2nd restaurant in Zona Colonial but the building we wanted was very expensive. Let me know if you have more questions.

The fail safe, is the ability to be flexible to stop expenses when you have no sales. The best approach is a "CHIP TRUCK"business model in wings ! that's mobile to follow local gathering trends, and able to close down when and where there is no activity, to stop losses by lack of traffic. The catch, is to establish the bi laws, and to (having a place to park !) You would get complaints from the local restaurants already established that have your menu already on their menu if your too close to them; specifically, CHICKEN !.

@NorberisR4 жыл бұрын
That's another one of those products, like flavored wings, that if you put in a city like Santo Domingo you really have to advertise and bring awareness to your product. In a tourist area most foreigners which are most Americans/Canadians that visit DR you don't have to educate them. When they see Philly Cheesesteak they know what they are getting. Of course you would still have to do some advertising but not much educating people on the product. I would not recommed opening it in Santo Domingo. I would bring that idea to a tourist area. You will have a better chance at profiting. I think its a good idea because I haven't seen a business like that there and Dominicans understand Sandwiches, just like they understand wings just not flavored wings. I can see your start up cost being low for that business.

How would you be losing money? If you are paying in the country's currency to fund the business you're not losing money. Any country you go to with their own currency if you open a business you would earn money in their currency. You can't open a business in someone else's country and expect to get paid dollars.

I do consulting and I myself was going to open something there as well with someone who is already established and knows the purveyors not only in food, but small wears, decor, cutlery, dinning equipment and so on, that most ppl don't even consider. You can have a bigger menu, but you have to be smart and add items that you also use in other things as well. For example I use stocks for everything, for soup, sauces and so on, all my meats and fish I want on the bone. It's cheaper that way and I get the bones for the base of the stocks, chicken, beef and veal. Going to go through a lot of onions, carrots and celery so all the leftovers from the peelings goes right in the stock for the mirepoix. Three times the price is the correct way to go but really to know whats going out compared to whats being used you have to know the food cost formula. Not knowing this can really Fvck you considering what any one item is going into how many menu items. You really taking chances if your not doing correct food costing and I mean for every lil item, EVERY ITEM! Three times the pricing should be split just as it states. 1/3rd goes back into biz, 1/3rd goes to payroll and the last is what you bank. A little goes a long way I know this so well as far as scenery goes, you can get away with a lot for little money, but have to know decor and if you a chef then you know how important presentation is. Food can taste the best it can be but presenting it right hits the whole experience right out the park. If it looks like shit I don't care how good it may taste, it still looks like shit and I really don't wanna touch shit. Annnnd vegan options are a must now especially in tourist areas. The dude I was gonna deal with before this whole plandemic didn't offer any vegan and in that area where he is already established you are missing out on a whole market that could rival his current setup. Plus his platting skills could use a huge overhaul, but if you don't know, I guess you just don't know or care not too. Another market that is sorely lacking is the off premise catering market, but again you got to know what you are doing and what is needed to pull events off. You gotta keep in mind you pack up to go do an event there is no running back to the shop and getting it if its a great distance away and you forgot something, so you gotta be on top of it when it comes to the food that you are bringing to an event and all the ingredients involved with pulling it off. Then you got to deal with the rentals, where the location will be, what type of event, how many ppl, the pricing of the party per person also depending on what menu items they wish to go with. Then you need a spot to do a tasting as the event draws near and that always a freebie. Work out the contract, get the deposit, work with the rental company yada, yada, yada the list goes on a lil more. That is why you get white business owners, they're expats of corse who are trying to unload a biz now cause it's just become a money pit that the tourism is way down. They don't see the opportunity to reinvent while the downtime is upon them. that's just laziness coupled with stupidity and ignorance. One I just saw on KZbin no less trying to unload one for a ridiculas price that might sound good to someone who doesn't know and whats behind that cost as well. And to have to pay in American dollars for rent? I'd tell that person they on crack, we getting paid in pesos, you getting paid in pesos it just that simple. You want American dollars fine, but you taking the conversion hit not me and oh I charge a service fee to have the money converted on top of that! Read the fine print and always have a lawyer look everything over. Also be in your best interest to see if things are gonna be breaking down, cause if it looks that way then whatever money it costs to replace that item is either coming out the rent or the item is going with me when I leave, cause I take care of my equipment, nothing worse than having a dirty sloppy kitchen. Wanna know how a place runs it show behind the scenes, just walk right in and use the bathroom, that will tell you all you need to know what the back of the house is gonna look like.

People don’t go out to eat just to have wings, something else was needed. Wings and sports go together, you can’t have one without the other. A sports bar might have worked better
@NorberisR4 жыл бұрын
You are wrong about that. Hooters or Buffalo Wild Wings wouldn't exist if thats the case. And so many Wing Restaurants in Atlanta would be shut down. Say you don't go out just to eat wings but some people do.
@guillermone14 жыл бұрын
Norberis R. -I guess you don’t like to listen. Believe me when I tell you, people don’t go out to dinner just for wings only. They go for the experience that goes along with the wings. Do you really think people go to Starbucks just for Coffee? I don’t think so. The question you should be asking is “what experience”....???? What exactly did I miss? I doubt very much that Hooters sells better tasting wings then what sold in your restaurant. In fact I’m almost 100% sure your wings were far better. So if that’s the case, then what happened? That’s the question you need to ask?

@@guillermone1 Lol...I made a whole video on what happened. And yes I do listen when the advice is worth listening to. What you are saying is obvious and I know this. I know people go places for the experience as well as the food. Again that's not always the 100% the case. There a chicken spot around the corner for me that sells just chicken and its always busy. There is dining inside but hardly anyone eats in. In that case its the food not the experience. There are many cases like that and many like what you are mentioning. But if you never ran a restaurant or invested a dime into one you're just speculating. I know what I know from experience.
@guillermone14 жыл бұрын
Norberis R. -I know the hospitality business very well. I too have failed but learned from the experience and later succeeded. I have 30+ years of experience. Part of the learning process involves humility. I started washing dishes in a restaurant when I was 16 years old and worked my way up to manager. I know you wouldn’t do that and never will.
