Everyone can thank our government for this Problem, The DOE (Department Of Energy) had a law passed to have these (power limiters) put on all ceiling fans, Hunter, Harbor Breeze etc, it is a grand scheme to lowery energy usage .Mine went out after about two years of service. With a little head scratching and research i figured it out. Great video, thanks for the help

This was SO HELPFUL! My husband was going crazy trying to figure out why the fan would turn on but not the lights. He couldn't believe there could be any problems with a new Hunter ceiling fan!!! He spent a lot of time checking the wiring and wall switches before he watched this video. God Bless You for going out of your way to help other people fix this problem!

Hey man, thanks so much. Same exact model, I actually pulled up this video as my old man drove us to Home Depot, I even had the light fixture in my lap. We literally broke out in a fit of incredulous laughter in the parking lot as we pulled it out, and saw carbonated soot on the wires. Works just fine, saved money, keep up the good work, brother.

This fix worked perfectly. I had already replaced one light fixture, but ran across this video before I replaced the other two Hunter units that were doing the same thing. It literally took me 10 minutes to fix both of them. Thank you!!

dude for years this has been bugging me with both the units we have! I never found a "fuse" when I originally tried fixing it so i gave up. idk why I had the ambition to rip them apart again today but before I started cutting wires I figured I would search youtube to see if anyone else had the same thing going on and already figured it out, and sure as shit you did! Thanks man!

I had this EXACT same problem. This video is the only thing I could find anywhere that was helpful. I bought a hunter fan brand new one week ago. I removed that small piece like you explained and viola now we have light! Also - Hunter included lights that DO NOT fit the sockets. Wish I had a bought a different brand.

This video was very helpful. Thank you. All the other sources I consulted said to replace the pull switch but I tested it with a continuity tester and knew it was good. Had it not been for your video I would not have discovered the limitor was the problem.

Many , many thanks! I went through so much effort: checking wiring circuits, swapping light kits - Hunter customer service was of no help. I was ready to replace the fans (two with the same problem on a 3-way switch). You saved the day!

Wow! Dude! I wish I had found your video BEFORE I went ahead and messed up my ceiling fan! When the light went out with a bright "flash" when I tried turning it on, I assumed it was the light switch that burned out. So I replaced the switch but no avail. Further circuitry testing hinted that something went bad inside the motor housing but I didn't want to poke around further. Meanwhile, by replacing the light switch, I could no longer put the glass bowl back up, so I went ahead and ordered a new one. LESSON LEARNED!! Since the new one is also Hunter, I'll know what to do the next time it conks out on me! MANY THANKS FOR POSTING!

Thanks! You saved the day today... I thought I narrowed the issue down to the switch housing assembly, but couldn't order one from Hunter since they're obsolete. So, I searched the web for other options and found your video. I bypassed the limitor and have light again! I'm using LED lights, so hopefully temperature is not going to become an issue, but will look into getting a new limiter in the future.

I am so glad I searched this. I just installed a Hunter fan and I have power going to the sockets, but the lights won't come on. However, before I put it all together, I checked with my voltage meter and my main wires had power but the little wires did not. I was puzzled, but I kept on treading. Now I know. Thanks!!

Thank you! Saved us a bundle. By the way, while in there, I replaced the curs-ed halogen bulb component with an 11 Watt (but still VERY bright) dimmable LED and mini base for about $12; we will not miss the heat and arc-welder-level power consumption (well almost) of halogen.

The failure of this Limitor device was the fault in my fan light kit, also. I just unscrewed the wire nuts attached to each lead of the Limitor device (my leads were pink and white), and removed it from the circuit. Just like here, I joined together the black leads that were originally attached to the Limitor wattage or current limiting device, using one of the leftover wire nuts. Result: my light kit is working again! The Limitor device failed due to shorting of the light bulb circuit when I was attempting to change a bulb that was stuck in socket and ended up being twisted off. Poof! Thanks so much for this very helpful video tip.

Too funny! I hooked up the same ceiling fan up 2 weeks ago. I did not attach the light assembly, just the fan. I disconnected the 2 wires to the light assembly and installed the fan. A friend told me to attach the light assembly, since it would look better. I did just now. I hooked up the 2 wires I disconnected. The fan worked, but not the lights. I switched the wires and the same thing. I took the light assembly down and it was wired wrong. I connected the thin white to the thin pink, the thick white to the thick white and the black to blue. Everything is working just fine now. Then I came across your video and laughed. It must have been a friday afternoon when our fans were wired.

Thanks man. You just saved me from buying a new lamp unit for my Hunter fan. Nothing looked charred and I would not have thought to even check that little device. Mine did have different markings on it, but looked the same. I just unplugged it from the snap connectors and the other 2 ends just snapped together...not that anyone should actually do that.

Great video! This was my issue. I measured the impedance of the T160 after removing it, and got about 500k Ohms. High but not infinity. I expected if it was the culprit it would be an open circuit, so FYI to others.

Thanks for this. This thing went and blew two bulbs in the process. Fortunately they were the old Incandescents it came with. Mine was the easier version you menioned in the video. It was hard to find, have to follow the pink wire. It was hidden pretty well. There was no identifiable markings on it. Wish I would give a 1000 likes. What is with all the downvotes? I mean this video was really helpful. One suggestion I would have is to detach the power connector on it so you can more easily work on it in a well lit area. Seemed pretty uncomfortable doing it like that.

OMG... never would've figured that out...awesome! I knew it was some kind of capacitor or something up in the housing. I multi-metered everything below and thanks to you, only blew $5 at Home Depot on what I thought originally was a bad/stuck (WD40) switch...Felt compelled to use the new one anyway...Not sure what that protects from a heat prospective, but I switched from incandescent crappy bulbs to LED's that use virtually no wattage/amps and give off no heat...

Positive temperature coefficient thermistor. It limits the current going to the bulbs by dropping resistance as they get hotter. It works like you girl friend, the hotter she gets, the lower her resistance is! Easy way to remember. They make NTC thermistors also. They work opposite. No fun there!

I work for one of the big name stores. I won't name names but I had a couple come in today talking about having to buy a new fan because their light quit working. I told them to bring the light assembly in and I could check something on it maybe save them from spending money on a new fan. I was ready for this issue. as soon as I saw that thing in the light, I knew it was the issue. tested it on my meter and sure enough, it was bad. but what really really got me worried was the wires the company used for this light. everything seemed normal but the limiter as he is calling it in the video was wired up with 20 maybe 18 gauge wire way smaller than all the other wire inside. It seemed very undersized for 110ac

A better quick fix is to stop buying garbage from Home Depot. Even if you think it's not garbage, it's probably been returned because it was not working and the idiots at HD just put it back on the shelf for you to buy. Can't say how many lights I bought that were missing parts or didn't function and had clearly been returned and I had to go back to the store and get another, only to find out it had been returned as well and was missing parts... After going back to engineering school and no longer installing garbage lights that were purchased at Home Depot, I haven't had a single problem. Until I stay at someone's house who has one of these.

Great video! Dead on ... the stinking "limitor" was the culprit as you mentioned in your video. Before this I had already taken apart the wall switch, fan switch and couldn't find the problem until I saw your video. This is s must video for all those handymen out there. Thanks for sharing!

Looks fantastic, how long is it? I am surprised that even new, there are problems. I was watching a video with a guy that bought a 2 year old Prevost with 6000 miles and he put $15,000 into it the first 6 months. The interviewer said it was common to spend money on even new units in the first year. I was surprised that within 2 years, lots of parts are no longer available. Have fun and follow the sun. Love your videos
