The only problem with giving your ants access to outside is not only does it give your ants the option to leave, but it also gives other creatures (unwanted ones) a chance to enter your Ant House. But I do like the idea of keeping them in a setup that makes them feel as if they are high up in the trees even if they’re not. With winding branches spread out where they can travel to and from their terrarium and of course plenty of leaves for nesting. I think a open concept terrarium like with your fire ants would also be epic! But I trust you AC if you believe your idea will work with keep them outside then go for it man! After all we’re all for trying new things that may or may not work.

I like the constellation mothers. Aries, Virgo (or Sagittarius) and Aquarius. This is because the wonderful silk Chambers are what they are founded in such as when we are born under the constellations and also how the silk itself can look like a constellation bound by the stars/ants that reside in it! (Also maybe the constellations ursa major for one of the brown queens [stands for big bear because their mandibles look like great claws and theyre fierce] and ursa minor [little bear] and finally cassiopeia for the green queen! Also because you are still discovering a lot of things about this wonderful ant species just like how we discover more about space every day!!

I think it would be best for initially having their set up entirely indoors, so that the colony can have the chance to get bigger and stronger. Once you have them well-established into a set-up like the Emerald Empire's, then you can provide them a passageway to the outdoors. This way, if any invasive ants try to move in, the weaver ants will have a better chance of defending themselves.

If you do this I think they will just leave; you can't recreate the humidity and airflow they can get from their own nest in leaves, which they are evolved to want - the ant room might even to too sheltered for their tastes due to lack of wind and so a lack of air flow. If you do try this and what to stop the queens from leaving, you could try to cover the hole with a mesh too small for the queens to escape, while also providing them with plant nesting sites in the ant room to keep the colony happier.

Name suggestion: The Emerald Triad. Something you could do for this setup (for indoors), that will likely keep them inside, and get the Aesthetic you ate looking for.... To add to this comment, we could name them individually! In Greek, they’re named Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. In Roman antiquity, they were Nona, Decima and Morta. They exist in other cultures too! I think the Fates is a great idea for weaver ants 😇

To avoid your colony migrating out, it might work to have a hole/tube where the workers fit through, but not the queens. Though I'm not sure how you can avoid smaller ants coming in.

Given that the other weaver ant colony disappeared, I think exposing it to the open is a bad idea not only for their chances to move and escape, but it runs into the same issue of making them even more susceptible to ghost and pharaoh ants. It’s a bad idea and a waste of time raising those 3 queens.

I was thinking the same thing. When you have no idea what happened to the last colony and they were only open to the room (not outside) its very risky to open them up to the whole world. Not to mention giving "wild" ants a welcome mat and they could disturb his other set ups as well. I'm pretty sure he will do it anyway, but it's a absolutely terrible idea.

@@moaiaiaiaiaithe problem is we don’t know the success rate of the outdoor colonies. It’s possible a hundred colonies have tried to set up, and only two or three actually survived long enough to be able to consistently fight off the competition.

As those three queens are bound together as a fateful sorority, I'd suggest "Moirai" for the three sisters weaving fate from greek mythology, or "Norns" after the somewhat similar trio of sisters in nordic mythology. the latter are also connected with yggdrasil, the great tree of live, which would also fit weaver ants living in trees... So the colony could be the "yggdrasil's gardeners/protectors" or something like that. Or the "Moirai silk farmers" :D

I think that you should grow the colony first using an indoor plant in an attached terrarium. Once the weaver ants establish their nest in that plant, then I think it would be time to grant them access to outside world, since they would most likely be more prepared by the time they establish a nest in their set-up. You've also got to keep and eye out for enemy ants invading the set-up, which is why I believe that you should grow the colony until it is stable enough to fend off any intruding enemy ants. During the time of their development when the weaver ants are stabilizing themselves, you would have to feed them as you would any other colony without granted outdoor access, but if they do reach the step of gaining outdoor access, you then could allow them to hunt outdoors. I hope you like my idea, but if you don't, I suggest that you keep an eye on the weaver ants' tunnel indoors and outdoors and check to see if they have enough food since you mos likely won't know if some of the colony or all are hungry and fail to catch enough food. Promise that if you catch another weaver ant queen, then you will raise her as a secondary colony that you could compare to this one? It's fine if you will release it eventually.#AntLoveForever!

I do love the idea of a semi-free range ant colony. There are potential risks such as the colony moving out as you had mentioned, as well as pathogens and parasites from outside entering the colony. High hopes that it works out.

Recommendation for the habitat/enclosure! Why not make it large like some of your other habitats by essentially making a large vertical glass box to house a small tree or plant for the ants, and station it next to the window? That way you get a larger habitat for them to grow with :)

To keep them from moving their colony you can try putting a queen divider in the tube that leads outside so that the queens can’t get out. This has worked for me with my carpenter ants.

I don’t know about the future set up for the Weaver Ants. You’ve just done 2 massive experimental set ups with the Fire Ants & The Marauder Ants, so I feel you could take a break from these massive experimental projects & stick with something safe (like the massive Weaver Ant colony we had before). I feel if there is any major risk to the Weaver Ants, it’s not worth it. We gave up one a few years back & lost one last year. I’d hate for the 3rd attempt at keeping Weaver Ants to also fail, whether by them dying or leaving to live outside

Do you remember when you were building the ant house, yo had the idea to build a weaver ant colony attached to the wall spanning a few feet or so with plants? the green one should be named the Jade Empress, The yellow/one guarding the entrance should be named the Pyrite Queen And the brown one should be named the Topaz Empress (topaz can be brown).

Love the idea of having them be able to go outside and forage, however I'd suggest doing so after they have a good established colony and not when they just start getting their first workers. Along with having a chamber connected to it in the Antroom, where you can still lend some assistance by feeding them on occassion. Mostly to help ensure they are more likely to remain, and to give them another edge against competition within the yard. Treat them as your personal guard-dog of sorts against invasive species; by ensuring there is always one powerhouse native that can reliably pump out queens and hold territory.

In old norse mythology there are three wise old women called the norns, or sometimes "the weavers of fate". They reside at the base of the great tree yggrasil weaving the threads of fate into lifes great tapestry. I think this would be a great name for these three queens

The three fates! Atropos-the past, Clotho-the present, and Lachesis-the future. They also had a dead sister who was unnamed to represent the unknown. I think it’s very appropriate given the history you have with weaver ants, and the excitement we all currently have for the future of this colony!

I don't know about the current plan with the weaver ants. Besides giving them a chance to just leave, they could just as easily be attacked by other ants or something else that finds its way in.

You could place a flat glass table to rest the enclosures on, with something soft placed between the surface and the bottom of the enclosure to avoid breaking/scratching the glass and then cover the entire bottom of the glass table with something that will deture invasions from other bugs

You could try getting a tube to connect the ants to the outside world that is too thin for queen ants but wide enough for workers

In this case it will be the rebirth of weaver ants' colony to the channel. As we unravel their story, it will be a testament and a legacy just like what a flag do.

I feel like with the recent issues with invasive ants you've had with your other colonies, letting the ants access outside freely is tempting fate a bit too much. Additionally there's more risk of them bringing disease back to the colony. However, you could try making a sort of enclosure that lets them partially go outside - e.g. to an open-lidded tank outdoors they can't leave, but flying insects and such could get into, thus still providing a variety of food sources. You could also try introducing some honeydew-producing insects into the enclosure since they aren't likely to just kill those ones off if they can harvest from them.

Based of what you've covered on weaver ants and how they have a show of struggle to simply survive; coupled along side the fact they seem to be the most attuned with nature, how about the Triad of Goddesses from Celtic mythology: Boann - Brigid - Ceridwen are the Triple Goddess of Creativity, Inspiration and Vision. It also helps that celtic beliefs love to be interwoven into everything ( like how the ants weave a home from practically nothing) Also I know it's early, but I'm putting my vote in for the Tree Triad for a name for this colony in the future.

I think if you'd like to go for pet like names then how about... The bright yellow Ant Queen (The one that was shown guarding, I don't actually know if it's lighter or not) could be called Goldie. The slightly Darker yellow queen (still don't know whether it is actually darker) could be called honeycomb. The Green and yellow mixture Ant Queen could be called Lemon Tree or Apple Tree. If you prefer more wild like names due to their wild home plan then in my opinion @jaystone6533 's suggestion sounded pretty good. :)

On the Ant Home subject I love the idea I just wonder whether they'd then feel more encouraged to move out due to the unusual structure of their rn nest and also the fact that maybe you should try get them to a point where they're a decent sized colony before opening them to the outside world but you probably already considered that so nw!! :D

I'd love to name the trio Skuld, Beldandy, and Urd, or collectively, the Norns. In Norse mythology, the Norns reside at the roots of Yggdrasil and weave the fates of man. As Weaver Ant Queens, and a trio, it feels fitting, since they weave a colony into being, and, they're responsible for the fates of the colony! It'd be so cool to have a trio called The Norns as a group too, since indicvidual names then mean you can assign the names as you see fit and identify individual queens as desired!
