Why NBA Big Men Are Taking (and Making) More Threes Than Ever Before

There seems to be a growing countermovement aimed at the ever increasing move towards three point shooting NBA big-men. The most recent example, Lauri Markennen of Arizona, has even broken three point shooting records as a rookie, and appears to be flourishing because of this. In this video, I look into how three point shooting and shooting touch relates to height, and whether these relationships are fixed or project to develop in an ever increasing way.

@ 5:51 This is not "gravity" This is one of the 3 types of "floor stretch." Gravity is when you are not only closely guarded but you ALSO attract the attention of multiple defenders who believe position to "help" against you is more important than staying close to their assigned player. Your "gravity" will create open shots for other players who are capable of stretching the floor. Shaquille O'Neal had no ability to stretch the floor but probably had the most gravity of all time.

Also "spacing" just refers to the positioning of the offensive players, their shooting threat will determine whether the defenders open the floor or keep it tight. When players stand too near to each other they "collapse the spacing." Any 4-out offense offers maximum spacing, but there won't BE much space to attack the basket if you floor 4 bricklayers. Plenty of space to rotate the ball though.

It doesn’t, it only does relatively/imaginatively. I’m trying to help you to imagine what it feels like to be 7 feet tall. Because you can’t scale yourself up in real life, the best way to imagine it is to scale everything else down
