heyo friends, a lot of the things I discuss in this video come out of this journal article by Erin Myers about celebrity authenticity. It’s really great and I highly recommend you go read the full thing if you have time. link: oakland.edu/Assets/upload/docs/COMJRN/Faculty/Meyers-jpc.pdf

Wow! Thank you for this. Truly, I needed it. I am fairly new to the K pop world and I find that I have been completely consumed by the very things discussed here. I just want to thank you for putting this out there. My eyes are open 🙏

This is well done, it's like watching presentation video in class but in an entertaining way. Jaehyun did make a vlive video once and said "i feel pressure that i have to look perfect all the time". It's saddening to see him thinking that way. When you mentioned about every SM artist is branded for a certain image, i knew that Jaehyun was pushed to have Prince-like image by SM back in the day and he probably took that image seriously as he is famous for being a hard worker. He seems more relaxed nowadays but I do wish he just do whatever he wants and be happy.

SM definitely relaxes the prescribed images after a while. All their artists are so rowdy and chaotic it’s so hard to hide it anyways

Really interesting, thought-provoking video. I know celebrity personas exist, and I'm usually able to recognize them, for example, with Haechan or Jungwoo where there's a clear image they're playing up. On some level, I've always known Jaehyun is the same way, but because he's so incredibly consistent, I think part of me wanted to believe I really understood who he was. But you're right that it's still an image, even if there is some truth in it, we'll never know exactly how he thinks. He is an incredible idol though, one of the best at being everything he needs to be, imo. SM really struck gold when they got him. Anyway, I'll definitely be checking out your other videos. I've always been fascinated with this aspect of kpop ever since I learned SM idols undergo personality training. Edit: Another thing I realized: I think fans, even the ones who recognize the marketing, help to perpetuate and sell these sorts of personas just as much as companies do. Unless there's some big scandal that shatters the image for everybody (like with Seungri), once you get in far enough to see times when they're not consistent with their image, you're often emotionally attached to them already, and would rather help convince non-fans of the idealized persona to draw them in, rather than admit your idol isn't what you thought they were.

This was one of my favorite videos of yours! I mean all of them are great, but I always feel like I’m teetering on this edge of “uwu soft babies” and “kpop companies profit off of the exploitation of its workers and manipulation of its audience” so it’s always great to hear more in depth analysis of this issue as a way to remind and check ourselves, our behavior and the way that the content that we consume can psychologically impact us

Even though, deep down, I already knew this even before I got into k-pop, this video was really hard to watch. Especially because Jaehyun is one of my favs. However, I really like your essays and look forward to your next one.

Thank you for your very thoughtful comment. I'll admit when I originally wrote this script Jaehyun was not on my bias list. But the more research I did on him the more impressed I became. I wasn't being dramatic in part 1- like he really is just SO damn good at his job, it's incredible. He's one of my favorites now too. And there are times now when I feel very bad for him. I was thinking recently about the 24hr relay vlog they did about a year ago. And how excited I was when that came out. I watched every single episode like multiple times. And how horrible that would be to have to film yourself at home, in your private space, during hours of the day when you are not supposed to be working. And that they probably didn't have a choice. It's quite sad really.

@@ItsTheTinyBug hey may i know how you decided to choose jaehyun as the main subject when he was not on your bias list in the first place. kinda interested to know the process haha seems interesting to me.
@ItsTheTinyBug3 жыл бұрын
@@justincase214 I kinda tried to do my best to explain why I chose Jaehyun in part 1. But for further clarification why I chose him- he’s really the idol that stands out to me as having this very clear cut celebrity image. And in so many ways it's come to define him and the kind of content released about him. Like all other idols have images, but I feel like there are always some moments where they don’t 100% deliver on that image. Jaehyun, to me at least, just always seems to be "on" in a way that other idols aren't... if that makes sense. It's like every piece of content whether he’s petting puppies, or shopping for music, or answering interview questions- like he’s always "boyfriend material" all the time. And I think it's 1. pretty impressive how consistent he is and 2. just really interesting to analyze because I think it says a lot about him and they way he approaches his work. I also wanted to talk about an SM idol because I think they play a big role in all this. And I also think that the concept of "boyfriend material" itself is really interesting in terms of the social dynamic it creates, and the role fantasy plays in our interactions with celebrities, and how celebrities impact the way we see ourselves and others around us- including our romantic partners. I didn't really talk about it in the video, but you mentioned the prince-like thing in your other comment; and "prince charming" is essentially just a sub category of "boyfriend material". So Jaehyun isn't even just "boyfriend material" he's this very very very specific kind of "boyfriend material". And yeah, there's just so so much to talk about. So basically, I made this series about Jaehyun because to me he is the obvious choice. But I use specific examples to talk about wider concepts in all of my videos, so pretty much all of my points could be applied to any idol. I try to be as objective as possible in my videos, so who my personal favorites are is not really part of the equation when I'm researching and writing scripts. (although I can't really make videos about groups I don't stan because.... i... just,, don't know anything about them... obviously.) For me, my youtube channel is not a platform for me to talk about how much I love a certain member or a certain group and how they're so amazing. There's plenty of that already on the internet. My goal is to get people to think critically about the media they consume. Marketing is everywhere, you interact with it constantly, and whether you realize it or not you are being sold something. all. the. time. And in this case, when you watch Jaehyun's "I Like Me Better" cover, you are being sold a fantasy, you are being sold an identity, you are being sold a person that does not exist. ...but my bias is Renjun in case you were wondering lol. I love that boy. Or rather, I love the idealized version of him that SM sells me. Sry for the crazy long response.

This content is gold. As a psychologist myself and a SM stan since 2012, these topics always come across my mind (how their are seen as products bybthe company and the fandom itself and how could this lead to them not knowing who they are) but this is so well elaborated and insightful I wish more could see it. I'm interested in you opinion about shipping and everything that it involves, it would be really cool if you could make a video about it. Keep with the quality content and thanks for your hard work.

I stumbled upon this video and I really like it- very insightful and mind simulating. I agree with your sentiments. Here in the Philippines, they released a movie entitled "Fan Girl". To summarize the movie, it teaches you a simple lesson- "you should never meet your heroes." The movie depicts a different story, ofcourse. I am just relating the lesson I learned from it. (The movie is disturbing but it'll make you ponder about stuff like this.) Indeed, idols are often detached from themselves. At the end of they day, they are idols that has an image to maintain, we won't know who they really are completely. I am talking about the majority of idols not just Jaehyun. In case some of you are wondering, yes, I am an NCTzen. 💚 It's just that I'm an existentialist too. Lol

omg I spent HOURS trying to find it. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ Seriously if anyone knows the interview I'm talking about link it pls. It was an NCT Dream interview and they were on some show- similar to weekly idol (but i don't think it was weekly idol I combed through those). More than a year ago but I don't think Mark was there. But I very specifically remember Renjun talking about SM wanting him to be/act 'innocent' and him talking about how he decided that there are many different ways to be innocent. Anyways, the way he phrases his answer heavily implies that he wasn't really on board with the image of 'innocence' and how he basically came to terms with it by deciding that he could be his own version of innocence. And it’s a very good answer and super well worded and it bothers me to no end that I cannot find it!
