Buying near-expired food at discounted price is a legitimate economic activity. People should be questioning why is this not done more often instead.

As a foreigner living and working in Taipei, I can say there's something seriously wrong with local salaries' purchasing power. Rents for a basic one bed flat can be ridiculously high (hence all young people live with parents or have to rent bedrooms) and groceries are often more expensive than in the UK, and not just imported goods ofc, but even basic vegetables such as greens, garlic, onions, condiments etc. At some point, I was lucky enough to be in a job that was paying more than twice as much as a basic Taipei salary and still thought prices were steep. The govt really ought to fix this. Cooking fresh food is actually far more expensive than buying microwavable ready meals packed with E numbers and trans fats or getting take away, so very few people cook at home. Overtime it will lead to increasing epidemics of CVD, diabetes, cancer etc, which even the excellent Taiwanese healthcare system won't be able to put up with. Seems to me it would be better to invest in prevention too rather than just in the healthcare system. One way or another, that money is gonna come out of somewhere.

People around the world have been doing this for decades. People never heard of day old bread / baked goods. And, stores have been discounting goods for ages that are close to the sell by date.

I swear some of our supermarkets are wasting stuff, and refusing to sell them at heavy discounts. Usually they take them off the shelves to maintain reputation. What happens to these items, we will never know. Especially the hot/cooked foods. I see too many unsold ones. It's suspicious to me.

Welcome to capitalism. They'd rather destroy food to maintain prices rather than give it away to the needy. In Malaysia, Cameron Highland farmers dumped thousands of tons of vegetable just last year. US farmers were also dumping millions of tons of potatoes and gallons of milk. It's not that the planet can't grow enough food to feed us all, it's the capitalist need to protect profits that's keeping so many people malnourished.

The point of this Singapore report is to stress the fact that TW is not equally rich as the US-led western world promotes it to be. Most ppl are in hell except those in semi-con industry, but real estates of the areas where semi-con employees live were raised to sky-high to the extent those ppl are also in pain. All this money go into the DPP campaign fund contributors in the home builder industry. TW's citizens mostly feed on minimum wages of 6.5 USD an hour, and most does not make the GDP per Capita calculated by this gov't.

Funny that there will always be people who comment home cook food more cheap and fresh. Can't they understand that not all rental place allow cooking and cooking for 1 person meal can be more expensive due to sauce and tools use. You need fridge to store the food to not let it go bad. Not everyone are born a cook chef. Some people bazi show they burn the house down if they try to cook.

Class segregation have already been form worldwide by now already. The general trend is money grow money. The rich become richer while the poor become poorer. The rich also reproduce lesser than the struggling class so that mean even more money to stretch and live comfortably while ghe poor have lesser to spend due to family raising responsibility concept and inflation etc. Lastly everyone love steep discounts. Chain all these up together you will have a complete picture and answer to this video's question. Basically it is just common sense and simple observations and explaining.
