Having lived in many states, New Mexicans have a particular hatred for Texans that is pretty unique, and is backed up by a rivalry that was continuously violent for a century.

It’s not quite true to say the Democrats were the Conservative party before the 20th Century. For one thing, they didn’t see politics as Conservatives vs Liberals like we do today. For another, what is meant by Conservative then isn’t the same thing as now. For example, was William Jennings Bryant a Liberal Democrat with Socialist tendencies, or was he a Fundamentalist Conservative Christian? The answer is both, and that makes it impossible to force him into the modern Conservative-vs-Liberal binary. Finally, there were plenty of Conservative Republicans and Liberal Democrats back then too. Neither party had a monopoly on either label.
@swirvinbirds1971
@swirvinbirds1971 6 жыл бұрын
This is correct. Back then both parties had a conservative, moderate and liberal branch. It's a shame that today we seperate ourselves so as we only get one sided opinions anymore from both parties.

Tis because labels like conservative and liberal arent positions per se ... they are perspectives about the current states of affairs... for eg a conservative wants to preserve the status quo. What this entails depends thoroughly on what the status quo is at the time.

Truth. I'm born and raised in West Texas. Nearly every native New Mexican I've met or know, is family. None of us are too impressed with the Californication or swamp-yanqui agenda that those people bring to our beloved land. They are the ones working to divide us. We natives see what the left-coast is doing. We are not as gullible as they think we are. Our day will return then, peace again.

New Mexico is a very poor state. Its main draw is from art and tourism. Texas is vastly more industrial. New Mexico makes most of it's money off Texans looking to escape to a less harsh landscape. Ski resorts in northern New Mexico, for example, are full of middle class Texans due to its proximity to Texas. Anyone else would just go on up to Colorado. Which, if you want to avoid snobs from silicon valley, it's not a bad idea to head for Angel Fire or Red River, NM. The resentment is largely due to victim mentality and it is almost entirely held by New Mexicans. Not Texans. Their legal system is also completely shit. For example, you'll hear about people with 20 DUI's being arrested and released again the 21st time. In Texas if you get three strikes you're looking at prison, but most likely community service and several years of it after serving some jail time. Their legal system is also extremely corrupt. Judges often take bribes and the overall system has a 'mi familia' feel to it. Which is to say, the nepotism runs deep.

I'm a native son of Texas & I can honestly tell you I've never once heard a single cross word about N.Mexico but I guess on the state lines you'll have a fair amount of problems where LAW(s) intersect one another? There's more trouble between Texas & Oklahoma than there is w/ NM & that's because of the Red River boundaries which seem to change? Of course then we had the Army Corp. of Engs. try to take control of some 7 million acres along both sides of the Red River but that legal battle was decided for Texas. Of course IDKnow too much about all of that because they don't tell us & the News doesn't tell us the truth either. Good video, thanks

Hey History Guy, At about 2:40, You say that Texas declared independence in 1835. That's one year off -- well, maybe a few months off. In 1835, the Texians drove all Mexican troops out of Texas. At the time, they were rebelling against Santa Anna while supporting the Mexican Constitution of 1824. They even used an "1824 Flag" -- the Mexican tri-color with "1824" replacing the Mexican eagle and snake. Texas voted for independence on March 2, 1836, and became an independent Republic. Perhaps you can accurately say that Texas began its rebellion in 1835, but Texas considered itself to be a part of Mexico until early 1836.

In New Mexico we sometimes wish Texas would forget that we exist. They are obsessed with our culture and are constantly mimicking it. I guess immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. You also forgot to mention the connection between the Texas Rangers and the KKK as well as in the early 1800's the Texans would raid caravans on the Santa Fe Trail. They almost came to war with the US army over this as the army was sent to protect trade with Mexico and Texas claimed to be at war with Mexico thus all trade was fair game to steal and all Mexicans we're fair game to murder.

As a Texan who lives nowhere near NM I got a rather rude intro to the opinions of a table of young New Mexicans at a hotel restaurant in Santa Fe. They had no idea we were from Texas so they were quite vocal and easily heard trashing Texas over a good deal of the restaurant. For a few minutes I paid them no mind but then it just got so drunken rant I really couldn't ignore it. I stared down a person I locked eyes with at the table and gave him that condescending look an older person gives a younger one and he finally got his friend to tone it down so we could enjoy our meal. Truth is almost no one in the Houston area really knows anything about this rivalry.

Texan here, but a descendant of New Mexicans. My grandmother was related to Elfego Baca, and her earliest ancestor was with Onate (not a particular point of pride, btw). I haven't personally noticed any animosity between New Mexico and Texas, although that could be because of the strong family ties that still exist. But the immigration of so many Mexicans is changing the language and customs of the Hispanos. Even my father's native New Mexico accent (in English and in Spanish) is now quite rare. I have no problem with this at a philosophical level, since this sort of thing has been happening throughout history, but I hope the language and culture of the Hispanos is being properly recorded for future study. Oh, and I wish Texans wouldn't only make posole for Christmas, dammit.

All very true, it's primarily a Northern NM thing (obviously). Our last Governor was called the Tejana as an epithet, because she was born in Texas. So it's still very much a part of Northern NM culture to dislike Texans and really anyone that isn't either native or Spanish...particularly Mexicans. People not from NM assume that Hispanic people in NM are Mexican, they aren't. Historically anyway, they're Spanish Colonists. It's just the proximity to the Mexican border (and the name) that gives rise to this mistake. Although, the further south you go in NM, the more predominant Mexican culture is.

I know this video is about two years old at this point, but I must rebut you on one point. As a guy born and raised in Arizona, I would say you vastly overestimate any Confederate influence on modern Arizona culture. I will allow that this influence is greater than zero, but it is orders of magnitude below the Confederate influence that can still be seen today in states like Georgia or Mississippi. I would attribute Arizona's conservative bent towards the heavy influence of Mormonism from Utah and Catholicism from Northwestern Mexico. Southern Baptists of both white and black congregations also have a presence. You cite an "angry streak" in Arizona directly connected to a "Confederate past." I assure you, even in Arizona itself, the schools hardly mention or ignore entirely the fact that the territory that would become Arizona was a factor in the Civil War at all. Again, contrast this to other states who make darn sure that their schoolchildren know full well what the great state of [InsertYourStateHere] contributed to the Civil War. Also, consider that for the much of Arizona's history (as a proper state) and even today, the number of people who move to Arizona from elsewhere outnumber the people who were born and raised here. The question, "So where are you from originally?" was often heard in my childhood and is still sometimes bandied about today when meeting someone new. My point being, Arizona has had little over a 100 years (hardly any time at all, historically) to develop any kind of state culture, and that has been constantly influenced by people migrating in from other states and other countries. There are people who display the Confederate battle flag, and I'm even sure you can find lost causers if you look hard enough, but that's the point: you have to look for them, they're not everywhere you look. And if you talk to these people and lead with, "So, where are you from originally?" I would put money on them being from outside the Southwest. In short, we've got our assholes like everywhere else. We've got our racists, our extremists on both the left and the right. But a stream of anger and indignance that flows into the present from the 1860s? Hell no. We weren't even born then. Now if you haven't already, please do a video on why all of California's neighbors hate California and vice-versa.

The people in West Texas don't harbor any animosity toward New Mexico!! People in the front range area of New Mexico; Roswell, Carlsbad, Santa Rosa, Tucumcari, etc., would rather be part of Texas (Their economic and political ties are closer to Texas than the rest of New Mexico). They resent being politically yanked around by Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The person who made the comment about people being unaware that New Mexico is part of the United States, struck my funny-bone. Years ago I had a North Carolina college professor tell me that I spoke surprisingly good english for someone from a foreign country.

NM born/raised. It is interesting that our current politics are liberal but our legislative history is modern conservative. For instance, looking at Texas laws, you cannot open carry a firearm, certain knives were banned until recently. Here in NM, we have open carry, no registration of firearms, and lax knife laws comparatively. It's because we are the actual Wild West, lol. But really I'm beginning to see Texas as a historically more controlling government with little respect for the constitution of the 13 colonies.
