Rushing is not dead. In fact, rushing attempts and rushing yards are as healthy as ever. What's changed is teams realize you can get the same production from two C+ backs as you can from 1 B+ back. They also saw that only a rare anomaly makes it past 30, and the big payday is hardly ever worth it because of injuries and inconsistency from a position that's HIGHLY dependent on the O-Line.

Exactly. In the late 90's/early 2000's the Pittsburgh Steelers exploited the NFL's desire to build a passing league. Teams started throwing the ball more, and Defenses started using faster but lighter players to stop the pass. So,..Pittsburgh plugged in a 270lb RB by the name of Jerome "the Bus" Bettis, and ran the ball right down the league's throat!! You will always have to respect the running game!

There will always be short yardage situations where you'll at least have a player line up as a running back. Other than that, you'll probably be better off statistically with an extra receiver or extra blocker. A RB can be both, but not as good at either as a dedicated position player.

The position isn't dying. The traditional pay structure is. No more big contracts for "elite" running backs who are just 5 or 10% better than talented backs that can do the job for significantly less money. That cap space can be better spent on top tier offensive linemen who will ultimately create a better running game overall. Better to have a 1000 yard "good" back than a 700 yard elite back.
@tjanderson5892
@tjanderson5892 11 ай бұрын
It’s so simple. The position isn’t dying at all. The position is more valuable now than it’s ever been. There was always an inefficiency at the RB position. 1 RB to do everything. Common sense came through and said why should Kamara or Ekeler not have an NFL career just bc they’re not 210lbs? Let’s create packages that can take advantage of what they’re good at. Now ya have 3 guys doing the job 1 guy used to do. Yet all 3 guys make over 12-15million at the pos. So the money being spent on the position has actually increased. It’s just that the amount of serviceable players a team carries at the position has increased too
@LionelLordOfTheThundercats
@LionelLordOfTheThundercats 11 ай бұрын
@@tjanderson5892 No the money hasn't increased. When a team has three backs, non of them make 12 million. The average RB salary is less than the average kicker salary. Teams with multiple backs don't pay them bell cow money. The Falcons were the number 2 rushing team last year, they drafted a RB in the top ten, on his rookie contract, he makes more than all the RBs on the team the year before combined.
@tjanderson5892
@tjanderson5892 11 ай бұрын
@@LionelLordOfTheThundercats sorry but you’re wrong. Mostly. The kicker line is correct just not relevant. It’s fact that the amount spent on RBs today is greater than past eras. In most cases it’s not even close. We’ll take your example of ATL. I assume you’re referring to Bijon who’ll make around 6M. 10yrs ago your highest paid back was Ray Rice at 7ms annually w/ his relief getting 715k totaling 7.715M. ATL is on the hook for just over 15Ms to RBs this yr. Facts say that the team you suggested is paying double what the highest RB and his #2 made. Fax are facks. Says more about a saturated market than actual devalue of the RB position.
@LionelLordOfTheThundercats
@LionelLordOfTheThundercats 11 ай бұрын
@@tjanderson5892 No, the amount spent on all player is greater than past eras, due to inflation, but, the RB position is the only position that's franchise tag is decreasing because the salary of the top players is declining. Percentage of team salary cap dedicated to the RB is much lower than in past eras. So lets take my example, Bijan makes around $6m a year, that is more than the falcons paid Huntly, Allgier, and CP combined. Now Ray Rice made 7M, NOW the salary cap in 2023 is $224.8M and in 2013, ten years ago, it was $123M. So without Bijan's contract, last year, the percentage of the number 2 rushing offense's salary cap spent on RBs, was .88%. Ray Rice alone made 5.6% of his teams total salary cap. But lets compare him to Bijan, he is at 2.6% and that is because all draft picks are slotted, so he has to make that much. But for fun, CMC is the highest paid RB in the league at 12M next year, his percentage is 5.3%, he makes less that Rice. Fax are facks Rice would be the highest paid RB in the league if you adjust for current cap spending but in 2013, he was only number 8. Adjusted for the current cap, CMC wouldn't be a top ten earner in 2013.

@@LionelLordOfTheThundercats lol thought your first response would claim inflation. Was surprised when ya just outright claimed the facts aren’t true lol. But now youre just continuing to be further and further wrong. It is not inflation lol. Ya can try again. Your first response was wrong and your 2nd response is even more wrong than your first. A comfy little hut for your straw man ya but there lol. The claim was never that todays #1 RBs make more than previous era RBs. The tag decreasing tells ya that already. The claim is that the RB position is actually more valuable even tho RBs individually are paid less. Instead of paying 2guys 7m of the cap they pay 4 guys up to 20Ms of the cap. That discrepancy is not due to inflation 😂. I’m sorry. The higher figures are actual due to the new deal and revenue increasing from their new broadcast contracts.

RB by committee is far more effective for both player and team/franchise, however, when a RB exceeds their expectation and distinguishes themselves as "the guy," pay them. A great Runningback can cover up for a mediocre Quarterback. 85% of the NFL is full of mediocre Quarterbacks. Some of them would actually be good Quarterbacks if teams werent obsessed with throwing 35-40 times a game. Only a few QBs can be efficient with those type of numbers. It's because of the NFL fan base, almost everybody wants the ball to be thrown through the air rather than on the running it on the ground and commissioner Roger Goodell has took notice. It also sickening to see that, as I am a diehard fan of hard-nose football and defense. Today's football is all about offense (specifically speaking throwing the ball). I miss the old days of football, which was running the ball down the opposing teams throat and playing good hard hitting defense. And now it's all about throwing the ball almost all the time and playing soft tackling defense. It's a shame to see what football has become.

I love this comment because I agree 1000%! It's the same thing with basketball where shooting 3s has taken over using the mid range and dominating in the paint. People act like it's some evolutionary change of the game but in reality, it's because of the way fouls and penalties have limited defenses on what they could do and now it's easier for points to be scored. I'm sorry but two teams throwing the ball 50 times a game is not exciting.....it gets boring after a while just like it does with two basketball teams constantly shooting 3s. What people actually like is variety. THATS what being taken away. The other problem is that the two teams that have been the most successful with these new formulas (Chiefs and Warriors) are successful for a reason yet teams are going to try and copy their strategy to succeed and most will fail. In the end, what will happen is that things that are old will become new again. The FB position is slowly making its way back in. Basketball teams are starting to shoot more from the mid range. And last year, teams ran the ball more than they have in a damn good while. That's where I have hope.

In the Red Zone you need a big back. Inside the 20, the backfield is shrunken. The defense backs are very close together, which makes it hard to get the ball to receivers. If there is a big fullback in the backfield then the defense has to play close to the line of scrimmage. With the defensive backs close to the line of scrimmage, the receivers have more room. In Betis last year, the Steelers went to the Super Bowl on Bettis one yard runs to the goal line.

I think the running back position will likely go extinct. With that said, I don’t think the running game will go extinct. Personally, I played QB in my school days and running backs were always getting the ball. Also, running backs were getting HIGHLY injured and losing ability before the seasons end. They deserve a higher pay for lower shelf life, but I will admit the position itself is not as valuable in the nfl due to restrictions against hitting the QB/WR. But I think an average of 6 years for any pro player deserves a second look at! (THEY DESERVE THE MONEYYYY)

Not trying to be greedy like I said I don’t even have discord so this doesn’t even really apply to me. You sign players based on their individual career and the only situations that set the market realistically are the contracts on par with theirs in terms of years and salary. You don't have to overpay because another team did like the Browns and Watson. Teams can structure contracts creatively with incentives, guaranteed money, roster and performance based bonuses etc to protect their financial interests. Give a guy 20 mil guaranteed over a 4 yr period. He only gets the 4 mil a year for playing over half the games every season. His regular salary is between 8 and 10 mil. Success at the RB position is a product of succss at the OL. You will not find a "great" season for an RB without a strong OL. The upside for an exceptional RB is not worth an elite contract, when you can plug in any guy who is hungry, and fast *for his size*, and willing to take on contact, and plays to the game plan. There are 10 guys available like this in every draft, they just never get with a good OC/OL...why? Bc teams focus on akill positions too much, at the cost of their OL.
