Great video! Seems like there's also a potential parallel between this narrative and the colonial context from which Thanksgiving arises, particularly in regards to Jack's discovery of a "New World" and subsequent attempt to take over a culture that does not belong to him...
@meowmeow55917 жыл бұрын
is it thanksgiving because it's about someone from a different group using murder to try to steal & takeover another group's area & mimic their traditions in a way that's hollow and meaningless & then fuck it all up? actually yeah I mean really, this film is a pretty good metaphor for the Real thanksgiving
@tylerpatti90387 жыл бұрын
Jack did not use murder.
@LolaLens6 жыл бұрын
tyler patti not entirely true,. He entrusted the care of Sandy Claws to Boogie's boys, who then delivered him to Oogie Boogie, and then he and Sally were almost killed by Oogie Boogie by being boiled alive. So Jack almost was a murderer because he's an idiot. I like this idea, but as a pagan I see Halloween as Samhain and Christmas as Yule stolen by the church. To add another harvest festival in there that was founded on killing native peoples when I already have 3 harvest holidays makes this film harder to watch. I would rather be aware of history and then enjoy this movie for what it is, not try to assign it a holiday.
@oooh196 жыл бұрын
Halloween isn't a religious holiday though. It couldn't be taken by the church but yea you're right that many Christian holidays have pagan origins like Yule and Christmas; there are other holidays Christmas found traditions from. It's not always stealing it's that they're inspired.

Just throwing this recommendation out there for a Thanksgiving movie: Homeward Bound Animals trying to reunite with their family and make it just in time for Thanksgiving. Chance learns to be thankful for his new adoptive family, as well as more thankful for Shadow and Sassy. The kids recognize their stepfather as their father by the end of the film, making him feel fully accepted into their new family unit. So it reinforces the themes of family bonding and thankfulness. It's also a fantastic family movie, with parts that'll make you laugh and cry. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving is an American-only holiday. No one normally makes entertainment based around Thanksgiving because it would be a flop internationally: No one else celebrates it, so no one else is going to be interested in it (unless it's a comedy I suppose). However, Halloween is not restricted to just America since the holiday started in the UK and is practised in Canada I believe, so it has an outer audience, and Christmas is Celebrated all over and is considered a common holiday. It's like asking for a movie based off of celebrating the 4th of July: It only has importance in one country so the rest of the world isn't going to care so it's not gonna happen.
@davidgold3nrose7 жыл бұрын
Villager101 I don't think so. Excepting the really big companies, most movies (especially small or indie movies) don't expect to be internationally popular.
@memo-fq3ps7 жыл бұрын
The book of life and coco are both movies about la dia de los muertos which is only celebrated in Mexico and yet are made in the US and popular here (as well as other European countries). You could make a movie about a small/culture-specific holiday as long as it's fun to watch and is well known in the media (many countries around the world know about 4th of July, Chinese new year, st Patrick's day, cinco de mayo, Hanukkah, etc.) And making movies about foreign holidays that not many people know about is a good thing if anything because it allows children around the world can learn more about other cultures
@rogerstille64837 жыл бұрын

It's a bridge movie. You watch it for both Halloween and Thanksgiving. Rise of the Guardians is a bridge movie too. It takes place in Easter, but dag nabbit Santa, to no one's surprise, steals the show and you have to add on to the fact that the movie is ultimately about Jack Frost. Therefore, Rise of the Guardians is something you watch on both Easter and Christmas.
@Shadowlina6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it is also a Thanksgiving movie because it shows the polar extremes of Halloween and Christmas, our two most commercialized, celebrated holidays in the US? Perhaps we could focus less on these two days to find the peace and simplicity in-between them? Hmm...

This is the first time I've ever heard of Thanksgiving being referred to in any way as a "cross between Halloween and Christmas," except in one case where someone described Black Friday as a living Christmas horror film. I'm also confused as to idea that there need to be Thanksgiving films at all, for two reasons. First, given how Thanksgiving is presented with a false narrative about native-settler relations and "celebrated" now, no. Just no. We don't need it. Secondly, many people who do still get together and celebrate Thanksgiving watch the Macy's Day Parade, football, and classic Christmas movies as their traditional holiday fare. There is no need or desire for a Thanksgiving-specific movie.

"The Nightmare Before Christmas" is appropriate for Thanksgiving, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a Thanksgiving movie. Holiday movies are defined not just by their thematic relevance to a given holiday, but also by the established structure and/or tropes associated with them (specifically as movies). Each have their own language of how their themes are espoused. Take Christmas movies. As I understand it, a Christmas movie generally follows the template of "It's A Wonderful Life." A character is dissatisfied in some way (usually with their lot in life), but learns to appreciate what they have. They may simply have an overall negative outlook that needs adjustment. In those regards, "Nightmare" is a Christmas movie. Christmas does indeed share themes of gratitude with Thanksgiving, just as a Christmas movie does with a Thanksgiving movie. However, Thanksgiving movies tend to lean hardest upon being grateful for one's family. Although if we see the citizens of Halloweentown as Jack's family, it kind of works. ;)

I'm thinking that I'll buy some cranberries and I'll try to make a sauce out of them. They'll probably already have that, but I'll try to do one myself too. Other than that, I will probably buy some other goodies for after the meal that are just harder to get in that province than here, but have nothing to do with Thanksgiving. I also thought of maybe drawing some of those hand-turkeys that kids make on Thanksgiving in the U.S. Maybe to put up around the place, as though the kids there actually had cared about it. I don't know if I want just a Christmas movie. We do have Christmas here. I was thinking something more Thanksgiving specific. But seeing this video, maybe that doesn't exist?
