Unfortunately... almost. The stupid jock Tod was overused, and they broke the tension in some unfortunate places with silliness. I think (and my dad agrees) it could have been half as silly and been just as funny, but twice as good.

Nimona certainly was perfect, it definately made me emotional, still does a week and a day latter. I felt a bond with her before it even came out, i loved her so much. I think Nimona is who we all need right now. So tragic and so fun, brilliant casting and animation style, i only wish it was longer. Metal!

i havent had a movie hit me quite as hard with themes of devilification for being different, suicide because of constant rejection and most of all, it all being rooted in not being you, as a stand in for transsexuality. The movie is perfect alone by the fact that we dont got anything like it and even if we did, id vager that it still would shine above all

Is it specifically a trans allegory? Nimona never really seemed to embody being trans to me, bit as a Cisgender person i maybe dont pick up on these things. I personally found nimona to be a sweeping representation of almost all marginalised people.

@@cormacoconnor7726 it 100% is (although afaik t's more about being non-binary, than about being binary trans. But at the end of the day, if you relate, you relate) . The creator of the visual novel this movie is based on, ND Stevenson, is trans-masc nonbinary and has stated that writing this story has helped him a lot, and when Nimona talks about what it feels like to shift or how not shifting would 'kill' them you can see an actual trans flag in the background :)

Nimona is far far far from perfect. It forced the conflict and dumped exposition. It had a single moment that worked and was set up from the beginning, but even that was undercut by the super tropey turn of Balelister which pushes Nimona to the final act. Otherwise all conflict is forced by the movie relying on tropes without actually earning them.

In my opinion, Nimona is far from perfect. I find the message of “it’s okay to be different” to be basic. I’ve never personally struggled to accept people who are different. I don’t think society at large struggles to accept people who are different. However, society does struggle to accept LGBT people. I wish Nimona’s message was more specific to “it’s okay to be trans” or “it’s okay to be gender fluid.” These messages might have been the intention of the director, but I don’t think that either were clearly conveyed. If the message was more advanced, such as “it’s okay to be trans,” then I would’ve liked Nimona far more. In general, I prefer movies that have more advanced messages. For this reason, I prefer the recently released movie, Elemental. That movie had messages about accommodating immigrants into society and about second generation immigrants overcoming feelings of indebtedness.

how are lgbt people not 'people who are different'? and how much hatred and boycotting do you think the movie would have had incurred if it had just straight-up said that? There are plenty of nods to it, and I've yet to talk to a trans person who didn't instantly pick up on it. The visual novel was created by ND Stevenson who is trans-masc non-binary. The people who *want* to know that it's about being trans/non-binary know.
