I have mixed feelings about keeping wild animals confined. However, I believe it is important to spread conservation thru-out the world and to help species that are at threat due to human activity. To breed and reintroduce at threat species is a good cause to keep our environment stable is a good cause. To rescue animals and keep the ones that can not be reintroduced back to the wild due to disabilities is fine, too. Many animal refuges keep animals that can't be released on display as educational experiences to the public. In exception of these specific instances, like most zoos and aquariums, if you can enrich captive animals properly in captivity in healthy ways, then they become an excellent teaching tool as long as you treat it that way. As long as there is no cruelty involved. Most large animals need huge amount of space, which is not given and therefore creates problems like we see in orcas and certain sharks like great whites. Therefore, unless the animal is unreleasable, it should not be kept. A better way is to have wildlife parks where the animals can roam free and be habituated to people driving safari through them. The now defunct Lion Country Safari in So-Cal was a great idea that has fed the wildlife parks abroad, which are larger and ideal. I love the wildlife park that has the cheetahs that are so habituated to vehicles and people that they don't even mind interacting with the visitors. The animals are respected and left to their natural way of life but aren't stressed by visitors watching them. This is the most ideal way.
