Totally agree. Add the aunts from the original Sabrina live action show... I never saw the 70s cartoon, and the aunts from the Netflix series are too sinister to be counted as similar. I mean lets face it, Zelda is conspiratorial, ambitious, and at times fanatical. Meanwhile Hilda is a straight up murderer. (I don't really count Zelda's murders since the only ones we see are intended to be temporary... and, am I the only one to see parallels between them and the Cain and Abel of Neil Gaiman's Sandman series? I'm guessing it was intentional).

I really love that there's no Vampira without Morticia, and conversely there's no Morticia without Vampira. And the lack of Vampira necessitated the creation of Elvira. And Lily was originally a virtual clone of Morticia named Phoebe, but then changed to deliberately contrast her while still being inspired by her. So truly what you're saying is that Morticia Addams is the mother of them all. And Elvira and Vampira are the cool aunts who love the single life.

Morticia was the offshoot of a comic strip which inspired Vampira and Lily is just some creators wanting to make a horror comedy family series but seeing as the caricature of Morticia was going to be used elsewhere they couldn’t copy it so they brought up something reminiscent in horror and unique to the idea they were pitching. The success of Vampira is what made the shows The Munsters and The Addams Family being created but the ideas of each character is different. Elvira was more so to draw on the sex appeal and hot horror vixen draw that such characters bring into an audience

Lily definitely stands apart from the other three macabre mistresses, and does so for all the reasons which you so thoughtfully and neatly set forth. Excellent breakdown of her qualities verses the others, dead-on accurate. However, from my viewpoint, and on the simplest level, her appearance says it all -- she's nothing like the others in the visual sense (her hair or her dress), she is her own very beautiful and iconic entity. You can perhaps look for original inspirations regarding Lily's general look in MGM's 1935 film, "Mark Of The Vampire", and the character of Luna, played by Carroll Borland... An excellent video!

I purchased "Mark Of The Vampire" as part of a Warner Bros. / MGM box set (entitled: Hollywood's Legends Of Horror Collection) nearly a decade ago, and paid a reasonable price, $25 or under for all six films. Also, the movie in question was likewise available separately, as a double feature disc (with "The Mask Of Fu Manchu" as the second title). At this point, however, both items appear to have sky-rocketed out of any reasonable price range. I just checked Amazon, and the box set is currently going for $82.40, and the individual disc is listed for $64.95. Sorry, but it seems to be the way of things, if the studio opts not to keep these titles in long-term circulation. They're clearly on their way out-of-print entirely. If it's in any way helpful, Turner Classic Movies does show the film every year during its Halloween film fests... Best wishes.

FYI: When Yvonne was cast as Lily, both Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis expressed serious reservations about the idea. It was because although Yvonne had appeared in numerous films over the years, she had never performed any in any comedic roles. However, I am happy to report that both Fred and Al's fears were quickly put to rest as Yvonne demonstrated that she had a considerable talent for comedy that had not been previously tapped. Both men had nothing but praise for her once The Munsters started rolling. I think Yvonne drew on real life to create her Lily personna - using situations which all married couples experience in their relationships. I recall one episode where Herman, jealous of Lily, calls her on the phone to check up on her, using a not too convincing "fake" voice. Lily listens for several seconds, then, when the penny drops, says "Herman Munster, is that you?" in a way that tells the audience he is really going to get it when he gets home! Yep, I agree, Yvonne as Lily was definitely a class act all by itself!

Also, while I agree that she was amusing in some scenes, that does not necessarily mean she could carry the demands of comedy television show. The role of Lily was pivotal to the series, so I can see why Fred and Al were concerned. Fortunately, Yvonne showed that the comedic talents touched upon in McLintock were not a fluke - that she could meet the demands of a weekly television series, helping it to become a winner.

Its rather crazy the evolution of these characters and the influences they had on each other, with the singular exception of Lily Munster. Morticia Addams in the comics, influenced the look of Vampira. Vampira's look later influenced the TV Morticia Addams. The TV Morticia Addams and Vampira later influenced Elvira. Elvira's look influenced Angelica Houston's look for Morticia, though naturally toned down (cleavage especially). But Lily Munster really is unique. Her look is very distinctive and she herself is a much more suburban mother. From the way she dressed, though she was stunningly beautiful, Lily Munster wore a white flowing dress, much more modest and conservative, but still lovely, but not quite what you would call "sexy" which was not what Lily Munster was supposed to be. She was a loving mom and a caring wife, first, who just happened to also be a great beauty, but it was her love that they wanted to emphasize.

She happens to be a "monster" even if she doesn't scare you. She is a vampire. Whereas the others are "living". So she brings her own special mix to the group, all of the women are iconic and beloved by many. An so much a part of the time period and history of most of our childhoods. Batman was becoming a huge hit at the time and the actor who played Fred Munster was struggling in his costume. Also Lilly Munster is very much the pinnacle of classic horror with the pta mom twist. You mentioned the white parts of her hair matching The Bride of Frankenstein, but it goes deeper than that. She's a vampire which we know from Grandpa as she is his daughter and they mention several times in the show how they're no longer living in Transylvania. She is very much a take on the Brahms Stoker's Dracula with the white flowing robe being reminiscent of the vampire women in the "dream" in Stoker's novel. So she is very much classic silver screen cinema monster than say Vampira who's whole schtick was making horror look sexy through light BDSM.

Yvonne DeCarlo was definitely a unique style and didn't need to hard sell herself on the screen. This actress just oozed genuine class from all angles of entertainment. Great summary of the four characters Lindsay, and Yvonne DeCarlo was my favourite. Only two seasons though...not enough! I'll attempt to watch more of the earlier pictures with DeCarlo as I just seen The Ten Commandments here in Australia celebrating the Easter period and WOW what a knockout !!!! I love that Lily doesn't need to be "seductive" to be as beautiful as she is. And frankly I've never seen the huge deal over Morticia. If she looked like Carol Brady with blonde locks and pastels, she'd be dismissed for her prim and proper, domestic personality. The other two are just popular for being "sexy", but all three, as noted, basically have the same personality. I like that Lily is perky, actually gets angry sometimes and has flaws! Much more relatable.
