I'm 74 now and man the changes and differences that have taken place in military aviation makes my head spin. My dad was a P-47 jock during WWll and always said that was the pinnacle of piston engine fighters.

P-47 Thunderbolts. were great Aircraft but the P-51 Mustang, F6F Hellcat, and F4U Corsair were faster in level flight and the T-Bolts on a dive. The eight 50s were a devastating armament in the wings though.

My hat goes off to your father. I spent many hours at Chino air museum planes of fame. I named my electrical contracting company after the P-38 Lightning. The P-47 was a beast, the size of its tail mounted turbo charger was enormous. At one time I collected every model of military aircraft made in 1/48 scale & I had all of them hanging from fishing line off the ceilings. I had 121 when I stopped collecting them.

When I was with VMFA-112 (The Cowboys) an F-4J Squadron our CO told us that if you put powerful engines on a brick it will fly, and the F-4 was proof that was true. Approximately a year later we traded up to the F/A-18A Hornets x10 airframe plus 2x F/A-18B's

Speed is not the main factor in modern multirole fighters anymore, it is stealth in combo with its weapons systems, networking, DAS, ECM, ESM, tactics and teamwork.

The discussion of what fighter aircraft is the best, especially one based on top speed, is pointless. It all depends on the tactical environment and ROE on a given mission. Are you CAP, INTERCEPTOR or ESCORT PROTECTION for a strike mission? If you can't shoot BVR, your BVR missiles are useless. If you can use them, the short-range missiles and GUNS are useless. If you are required to be in contested airspace, your countermeasures will help save you. If the airspace is uncontested, different aircraft will have the advantage. Well-trained pilots currently make the difference, but the future will include unmanned fighters, and probably multiple unmanned decoys. It may eventually come down to drone vs drone in the air! That may mean the best AI will dominate? It only helps for that battle. In the end tactical and logistical support will win a war!

The SR-71 never officially flew over any of the USSR including the Warsaw Treaty countries because of an agreement after the Soviets shot down the U-2. However, the A-12 Oxcart (Blackbird successor) was operational many years prior to the SR-71 -- even deployed to Alaska for "unknown missions" so the rumors of the A-12 overflying Soviet airspace exist, who knows if true. Definitely possible in those years after the first A-12 Oxcart flight in 1962. An Oxcart over USSR at 27,500 meters, and mach 3.3+ before 1967 would have very little missile risk. If that ever happened.

The FA-50 is nothing but a watered down F-16 used as an advance trainer for the South Korean Air Force. As a trainer, it is probably the best in the world in that regard.

....not reall...., no. The P47 - R2800 double wasp... had a HUUUUGE turbo supercharger in the fuselage, aft of the cockpit as well as the internal supercharger of the R2800. The F4U had no turbo....but the P47 was a MASSIVE aircraft, the F4U a bit less so.

Far underestimated the top speed of both the Raptor and the F-15. The Raptor can do 1,360 mph without using its afterburner. The F-15 can hit 1,875 mph.

Superior in every way? How do you know? I am American, was born here and served in the army. Right after 9 11 I went to Italy I spent my whole career working in telecom. When I first started the division I worked for western electric a division of at&t eventually became lucent and was part of Nokia when I retired. Anyhow before I went to Italy I was convinced we led the world in wireless internet ... all things telecom. I arrived and my friends had gigabit ethernet internet connections just ordinary lower middle class ppl. While here in the US if you had a dsl connection at home that put you in the top 10 percent of home internet speed that was usually for a very small business 6 or 8 employees. Most of us had pagers not many ppl had cell phones you were a manager or ceo or worked in telecom. While in Genoa Italy 7 out of 10 teenagers had cell phones and were busy texting. I found out while I was there that for about 75 American dollars I could get a year pass on the train and go to any Italian town or Germany or France anytime I wanted. The Italian teenagers I saw were better dressed than 90 percent of the Americans. Not to disrespect Italy but ... The prostitutes we saw driving through the business district were pretty well dressed girls that spoke multiple languages. I would not have guessed their occupation had my friends not told me and there had not been 10 standing on the corner waving yelling ciao as we drove by.

It's painfully obvious that the narrator doesn't understand the abbreviations of units commonly used in aircraft specifications. Thrust is measured in "pounds," not "olbs." The abbreviation lbs. is from the Latin libra pondo, which is shortened to pounds. Maneuvering force is measured in "gees," not "grams." 1 G is the accelerating force given by earth's gravity. Thus, if you put a scale on the seat of an airplane and put a 100 pound weight on it, the scale would read 900 pounds if the plane did a 9 G pullout from a dive. Incidentally, it's unlikely anybody would build a manned aircraft to exceed 9G maneuvering capability. Any more than that would likely injure or kill the crew, so there's no point in putting in the extra weight to make the airframe capable of more. It's a different story with unmanned vehicles, which is one reason so many air forces are developing them.
