In this video, we are taking a look at some of the recent changes that Telecom companies have done, because TRAI asked them to do so, but instead of making things better for the consumers, these changes have made everything worse. In December 2024, TRAI asked all the Telecom companies (Jio, Airtel, VI, and BSNL) to come up with voice and SMS only plans so that people who do not use data, and are still using featured phone, don’t have to buy data unnecessarily, and they can save some money in their recharges, because these are usually the people who come from low income groups, rural backgrounds or elders, but what these companies did instead was completely wrong, and there’s a solid reason to why these telecom companies did what they did, and to know that, watch this video till the end.

Is there anything that we can all collectively do about this? Like, what happens if we all port to BSNL. Not saying one particular company is bad, but BSNL is just better for now. In 2016, we eagerly lined up for free Jio SIMs, ported numbers from other operators, and embraced the freebie culture without questioning the long-term impact. By doing so, we: *Destroyed competition (which forced price cuts but also killed variety). *Made telecom an oligopoly (dominated by two major players). *Accepted future price hikes without alternative choices. But remember: there’s no free lunch. Jio’s ‘free’ services were a business strategy, not charity. Now, with fewer choices, Jio & Airtel control pricing, and hikes are inevitable. Want change? The real issue is the competition that got killed due to Jio's freebies (aircel, telenor, uninor, docomo, mts, etc.). If they were alive, recharge plans would still be competitive.

TRAI is 101% to blame for this issue. TRAI had no issue in 2010, when telecom operators were gouging customers for 300Rs per GB with 1 month validity, or upto 10,000 Rs per GB if you didn't buy plan beforehand. But now, when the same companies are charging 500 Rs for unlimited calls, 8,400 SMSes, and 6GB data for 3 month validity, they have a problem over the 6GB being offered?

TRAI said to launch call only packs, I'll give a small example of how airtel took advantage & took their loot to next level. They had a ₹1999 yearly plan with unlimited calls & 24gb data, they removed that data & reduced that pack to ₹1849, but they launched a new ₹2249 plan with unlimited calls & 30gb (just 6gb extra compared to previous ₹1999 pack). So, they're looting ₹250 extra by providing mere 6gb extra.

What no one is talking about is the fact that before the advent of Jio and its pricing structure, it was a norm for individuals to pay for calling minutes (now called voice plans), SMS and data as per their requirement. This situation is because the Government of India let one company dictate the whole telecom sector. And now they are doing damage control in the name of looking out for citizens.

I selected a oack of 479 for 84days unlimited calls and 6gb total data as I WFH and dont need daily 1.5 or 1 Gb data and used to buy data top-up of 6Gb once I used og 6Gb data. Now i have 2 more months left of this plan and 0Gb data and cant even buy 6Gb data topup as it'll expire right after 7 days which usually takes me a month to consume entirely. 🤡 I'm thinking about switching to Airtel now.

That no-data 84 days plan shouldn't be more than 299/month. TRAI should really be a lot more strict with these carrier companies. The reduction in the number of such companies have resulted in a kind of monopoly and they have started to think the country is their father's property. TRAI should come up with some of the base and mid-level plans themselves and force the carriers to abide by it now. That is the only way to make things right now because these greedy organisations don't understand politeness.

For Data top-ups in airtel have changed entirely. Even if someone recharged a data booster pack, the base data (having long validity) will be exhausted first beforr the booster data pack (having less validity)

BSNL also no sanit here even they discontinued some of their affordable high validity packs like 201 and 797. 201 was 6gb data with 84 days and 797 was 0.5gb/day for 180 days
