I lived on a trout stream for several years. Dad and I realized that the stockies were on a feeding schedule from the hatchery. They ate at 6am 12pm and 6pm. We'd walk down after dinner and tell everyone, " Just give it a few minutes", then, bam, everyone had one on. It took them several weeks to get off that schedule. Also noticed that very few walked more than a few hundred feet from the road. Keep it realistic !

We have stocked trout here in AZ too. Most fishermen/women and kids generally get out to fish the same day or the day after. The newly stocked trout are trained to eat whatever is thrown at them. Make them easy to catch. The trout that survive that first day of fishing become incrementally smarter in terms of avoiding being caught day by day.

I’ve nothing against trout angling. But honestly, stocked trout anglers are the worst. They literally act like they’re some kind of professional rarity. And they leave the worst messes behind them. I’d rather them just go to the store and buy their trout, it’s cheaper and less annoying for the rest of us.

Last year I spent the night at a campground that had a trout pond on site. I didn't realize beforehand that the day after I arrived was opening day for trout season. By 6am people were elbow to elbow fishing a pond that was no bigger than a swimming pool.

This is why I rarely fish stocked ponds once the weather warms up. It is ridiculous. I have to be at the pond 30 minutes before sunrise and then I still have people trying to stand right next to me to fish, especially when I am catching them and they aren't. Glad it is an option for you. Hope you can get some this time or another day with less stressed fish.

Combat fishing is common here in Wisconsin too. Trout, salmon, and walleye have peak times where the river looks like the line at Disney world.
@SharingTheOutdoors13 күн бұрын
We sometimes go on stocking day. Spinners usually work better the first day than bait, the fish will strike at anything moving in the water just reacting to it, and you can cover more water quickly as opposed to drifting bait. While it can be crowded I enjoy the camaraderie and talking with other anglers.

Ive been watching your channel for a long time now. Yea open stock day is always the worst. They stocked the streams where i live i normally wait a couple days before i go. I caught my limit fast. Also heres a little tip with those eggs. Use a small #8 hook without a long shank it helps it. Also put the sinkwr closest to your hook around 6-8 inches above it buts it right in there face especially in swift water like you fish.
@emptypockets918713 күн бұрын
Here in NC the trout seem easier to catch at first light. It’s still crowded just like it is in your area but you usually try and find a hole with no one in it and you’ll usually catch your limit or just catch and have a good time.

I happened to be kayak bass fishing a local city pond a few years ago in early Spring. I had no clue that the city had started to do a single rainbow plant for angling and advertise it. I knew that I had a spinner somewhere in my pack, so I dug it out and quickly put it on my spinning gear to see if they'd eat right out of the truck. Some of them were already noodling on the surface, picking stuff to eat. I caught 3 or 4 on that spinner while the water was still on in the truck and trout were still dumping in and then went back to fishing bass. I would never had considered going back to fish for them that weekend when it would have inevitably been a zoo. A good reason to not fish for planters in a body of water that they'll stay alive in, is that a holdover will be a lot better of a fish next season.

Maine stocks many lakes and ponds with brook trout and landlocked salmon in October. Most of those waters are limited to catch and release for those species in October and November. That gives the stocked fish time to disperse and adapt to life in the wild.

The last time I was there EVERYONE caught fish and I caught nothing. I changed lures multiple times, people were yelling at me which color to use and I tried everything and got skunked. I'm not a fan of stocked trout. Not against them.I like that they help the big fish get bigger too. It's that I like to catch a couple for a dinner occasionally. Pond reared taste like dirt until they've been in the lake for a year. I also prefer a little more size to them. I don't mind skipping opening day either.

I like what Wisconsin does with our trout stocking. First 2 weeks are restricted to children under 14, people over 65, and people with disabilities. Gives them some time before it inevitably becomes a zoo the day those restrictions end.
