Completely agree with all your points. Mature attitude. Since I hit my seventies (good lord), I have zero inclination or incentive to “jock” read. I truly think it’s time now to really savor what I read. I don’t have to prove my reading prowess to anyone. I just want to savor the writing, the story elements, the fact that I can still read intelligently, and my pure love of books. No more rushing through my books.

Tiredness is definitely a factor, sometimes I just want to stream TV and not think 😴but people are my major reason for not reading. When I go to England, for example, and spend several weeks with family and friends I barely read because spending time with them is the most important thing. I never want to put books before spending time with people I love and care about. As for Goodreads, my goal for the past ten years has been small and never affects my reading, I’m just not a goal orientated reader. This year I didn’t even bother having a goal and next year I’m not even going to log what I’m reading on there. Next year is a year of no plans, no projects or goals and maybe less reading but that’s all ok. Thanks for the discussion Kim!

I do agree. With all your points. I used to have goals on Goodreads, not any more. I used to try and force myself to read the books I'd chosen for the month, i quickly gave up on that too. I'm a mood reader, so it doesn't work for a whole month ! I have a long commute, I read when I'm not too tired, otherwise I listen to music. Wise advice! My most often recurring reasons: * Tired eyes from a day spent reading print and spread sheets * Time with/for Real life family and friends is more important than time with a book. * The underwear drawer is empty, and a grocery trip is a necessity. * My body is craving movement. You made some great points which I wholeheartedly agree with. I am sometimes nostalgic for the days before the Internet when reading challenges and events did not exist. I had less access to books, and I read a lot but less than I do now. I love participating in events, but I realize that I need and want to do less each year. I am much more aware lately of being too tired to read after work and knowing it's okay. Life does make reading hard at times and self-care matters more than getting in a few more books each month.

This is a great discussion, Kim. All of these reasons resonated with me. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts about how Oryx and Crake affected you. While I did finish it, I have made the decision not to continue with the trilogy. I don’t want to be in the world Atwood has created in that series. It’s just too dark a place for me. I am so glad you are doing this video. I have placed undue stress on myself to read a certain amount, participate in group reads or book related challenges just to be a part of a bookish group of people, and of course reading ALL THE BOOKS i have mindlessly picked up since watching booktube which is unrealistic. I have actually had fleeting thoughts about just getting rid of them all and just going to the library and only have one book at a time to read. I am juggling several books right now and the only reason I am continuing is because the books are really interesting but in the future I need to be more selective with how much I take on. So glad you talked about the pressures of reading and presented this issue in such a thoughtful way. My wish for you is that the year ahead will be less stressful and that you will rise above the struggles of the past year using your good humor and positive outlook to guide you. 🥰💙📚🍂☮

A few months ago, even though I was fairly much reading the same "amount" , I realized I seldom experienced the same joy over the last few years when reading as I had experienced previously so I started a reading journal, detailing the reading experience moreso than a synopsis or review of a book and had the realization that I had fallen down the internet bookish content rabbit hole, ridiculous goals and FOMO. I had worked out which books I needed to read each week in order to complete all the prompts. I have completed 1 of the 5 Victorian works that I set out to this month and we are already halfway through. Now I am working on Demon Copperhead for a bookclub instead. Jane Eyre, she’s no longer in the cards for this month. One of my library holds came in yesterday. I did not set a goal for number of books read on StoryGraph this year, and it’s been wonderful! A relief! I finally got into DNFs a few years ago, and it was a revelation. But I will say the longer you go without doing it, the harder it seems to be. I just DNF a book last week after not having any this year and it brought back all the anxiety of should I or shouldn’t I. But once it was done it was a relief! One unexpected reason not to read for me was the pandemic. Having spent most of my life reading about 52 books a year on March 2020 I stopped reading books. For one year. A whole year, until April 2021. I was completely unable to read. I did return with a vengeance though, and now I’m one of those 200-300 books a year readers. So, you never know. I choose carefully, I choose slightly more challenging reads or longer books, and it's been a great reading year so far. This intentional reading is absolutely amazing.
